"Howdy."
In the very first word he uttered from the podium in South Carolina Saturday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry unsheathed one of the greatest assets he possesses in his quest for the presidency: an appealing life story that will allow him to connect with a broad swath of American voters.
The Aggie salute segued nicely into his national self-introduction, accomplished with sentimental recollections of a childhood spent helping his dad, a World War II veteran, grow "dry-land cotton and wheat" on a farm outside Paint Creek, a town so small it doesn't merit a ZIP code. He gave a shout-out to Troop 48, where he earned his Eagle Scout Award, and his mom, who sewed the clothes he packed for Texas A&M.
Why does this simple, hard-scrabble but idyllic childhood matter? "Hard work, faith and thrift." Ticking off the list of life values Perry carried with him from that West Texas farm, he invoked nostalgia with an implied promise that he could return the country to pre-Technicolor simplicity. "Thrift" - it's not a word we hear bandied around a lot these days.
Soon, legions of reporters will descend upon Paint Creek, but if they are looking for scandal - or even exaggeration - they will be disappointed. Perry's parents - Ray and Amelia - are the genuine article. She really did sew his boxers.
....Invoking the Reaganesque themes of job creation and optimism, Perry left little doubt which president he'd like most to resemble - though a fleeting Bushism escaped his lips when he reflected on the "sacrificial" Navy SEALS who died in Afghanistan last week.
Consider this concept: "All of us need to be reminded that the federal government did not create the states; the states created the federal government."

Oh, I don't know just how appealing the story of his all-to-recent Democrat history is. I haven't forgotten his stance on abortion and illegal immigration, have you?
The buzzing bees of anti-Perry activists with their “Gardasil-TTC-Border” mantra will only continue to highlight and enhance a Gov. Rick Perry nomination as truth of his work here in Texas gains national exposure. Rick Perry as governor, used all resources at his disposal in an attempt to make a cancer vaccine available to Texas children. The governor is battling environmentalist activists in his push for more transportation infrastructure in a state exploding with commerce and population. And using state resources, Gov. Rick Perry (denied the necessary and requested federal help needed by a border state to deal with the consequences of current federal inaction, in addition to shouldering the continued fallout from past federal actions) works to hold the line on the 1250 mile section of the U.S. border between Texas and Mexico, our neighbor to the south.

The president does not "create jobs" .... well unless you are talking about more government jobs. Capitalism in the private sector creates jobs. It is not necessary that we elect someone who has created jobs in his past work experience..... it's just important that we elect someone who knows how jobs are created and will set the nation on that path.
And as for "National Security" ...... is Perry really changing his stance on illegal immigration? Or is he just talking what he knows the tea party wants to hear?
No doubt he works hard and is thrifty and has faith, all good qualities in a candidate, but we must look deeper! I'm sorry, my gut feeling for now is that we can't trust an all-to-recent Democrat.
The RINO Perry seems to be in DENIAL about four words:
Gardasil-MANDATE,
Open-Borders-for-Illegals,
Rove-created Poser
One should judge a RINO by his walk, not his latest talk.
The more correct description is that Gov Perry’s policies provided business the atmosphere and conditions to start up and grow. A pro business attitude is a credit to the governor and trumps ehe alleged venial sins of Guardisil and a toll hiway.
I don't think we can elect someone just because they "have a trump card". We have to look at the whole package, and there is a fishy smell there.
Mountainizing ant hills when developing a total package distorts reality
Rick Perry’s early childhood seems to have been character building with good parenting.
I would love to see a list of former Presidents’ functional and dysfunctional beginnings and sibling screw-ups. It might be a window into expectations.
i.e. Clinton’s mom Virginia & bubba Roger. Obama’s mama & poppa. Jimmy’s brother Billy. The Kennedys.
Of course, most of our Presidents were born into families that were God-fearing, stuck together through hard times and loved America....before our values and morals took a hike.
A man who sees exceptions to his opposition to abortion has more than a fishy smell.
He’s PRO-LIFE....quit lying.
Come on! With the new rules, it’s OK to lie about a candidate that you don’t support. Get with the times.
I feel the same as you do and I want a candidate who will do something about those issues and Gov Perry will.
For those who are so concerned about illegal immigration, I would be curious as to which of the candidates who are running today, would do something about it? I believe you are right about the past presidents not doing something about it and future presidents won’t either due to the fact they don’t want to tick off the Hispanic base and like it or not, many are voters and with their population increasing many politicians are afraid to tackle it head on out of fear of losing votes. I’d be curious to know which of the candidates running for office has made illegal immigration one of their top priorities as I haven’t heard anything regarding it except for vague talking points.
It was about a year ago Perry met Obama at the airport in Austin to hand him a letter requesting additional border security and Obama was absolutely disrespectful and blew him off. If Perry gets the nomination I hope that video is used in a campaign ad and golf boy will learn the meaning of “don’t mess with Texas.”
In Biden Land, that would be three words.
He certainly looks presidential...
Wow, all this Perry bashing! I guess if he had a blank, shady past and voted present(like Obama) instead of being in the thick of running the biggest state government for the past 10 yrs, ya’ll might cut him some slack. He’s had to make decisions, some not so good, but at least he made some and hopefully he can learn from his mistakes. If he’s the choice I can vote for him.
Walk across the A&M campus and see how many times you are greeted with “Howdy”. Walk into any restaurant in Bryan/College Station and see how many times you are greeted with “Howdy”. It may not be a “salute” but it sure as H-— is an Aggie greeting. I am tired of people trying to make Perry out to be something he is not. He has been a good governor and the records of Texas reflect that fact. Geeze, there are surely some dorks out there who have a burr under their saddle!
Um, you talking to me? All I did was point out we have it on film that Perry tried to meet Obama up close and in person with his handwritten request for troops on the border and was brushed aside. President Girly-Man was on his way to another arugula & Kobe beef fundraiser.
