China to start landing drills on aircraft carrier
(AFP) 12 hours ago
BEIJING The Chinese military could launch air exercises on the nation's first aircraft carrier which was unveiled earlier this week, state media reported.
The manoeuvres could include aircraft approaching the ship, landing and then quickly taking off again, the Global Times newspaper said, citing a military source said to be closely involved with the landing drills.
The aircraft carrier embarked on its inaugural sea trial on Wednesday, prompting the United States to call for an explanation amid concerns about the nation's military expansion.
Beijing only recently confirmed it was revamping an old Soviet ship to be its first carrier and has sought to play down the vessel's capability, saying it will mainly be used for training and "research".
The Global Times report said that radio restrictions have been imposed in a maritime zone off the coast of the country's northest Liaoning province where the carrier is docked.
The planes being used for the drills are the Shenyang J-15, a Chinese version of Russia's Sukhoi Su-33 Flanker,

“Paying for it”. You mean.
Have you even shopped for anything recently?
Look at what is around you. Look at your computer. 95% of everything you have purchased in the last month for that matter.
LOOK AT IT!
Pay attention. The same factories, are learning to build bigger, more dangerous things.
Improving every single day.
LOOK.
Wake up America.
I wouldn’t be laughing...this is serious stuff.
Surprising that they would be using a frontline a/c for this training, whereas the USN uses a more training a/c such as the British Hawk for this training.
Dear China; you’re supposed to have all this confucian wisdom, well, start using it. Leave Taiwan alone. They don’t want to be part of your country and they’re our friends. If you feel the need to kick someone around, might I suggest North Korea? OK, maybe they’re your friends. How about Vietnam? There’s some friends for you. 55,000 Americans killed trying to help them and now all they can say is “Ooops. We were stupid”? Enter the phrase “ungrateful bastards” on any search engine and the first thing that pops up is a map of Vietnam. Shoot, I’ll bet we could make a fortune if you go after Vietnam. I’ll charter cruise ships and we’ll fill them full of American Vietnam Vets at $5,000 a pop and cruise up and down the coast of Vietnam and watch while you shell and bomb them. “Who wants another Ho Chi Minh Highball? Hey! There goes another bridge! I win the pot!” We’d make a fortune.
An intel buddy of mine told me years ago that “it’s going to get ugly in China for 20 years or so when they finally decide they’ve had enough and kick the government out. After that watch out because they will be an economic powerhouse...”
Click on pic for past Navair pings.
Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.
reminds me of the Pakleds. http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Pakled “We are smart”
Right...and before that it was going to be a floating “casino.” Maybe instead it will get accidentally sunk and then the ChiComs can “research” just how well an aircraft carrier works as an artificial reef.
I suspect it'll take a while yet before the Party overstays its welcome. China remains desperately poor - the average Chinese makes 1/10 Western wages. This means there's a lot of easy growth ahead simply by copying Western designs and production techniques. How has the Party stayed in power? In 1980, the average Chinese made 1/50 Western wages, almost dead last in global wage rankings, whereas it is now now solidly in the middle, ahead of places like Egypt, Honduras and Indonesia.
“News Flash! China loosing pilots and planes in droves as they try to learn carrier landings!”

Haha!! So true...
After their first “Forrsetall Accident” they gonna have to rename that canoe the “Kung Pao” because it gonna be HOT!!
I worked in Naval Aviation for 7 years and anyone know that landing on a strip painted up like a carrier deck or sims is one thing, but landing on a moving carrier is another thing and even for a veteran pilot landing on a carrier is nothing more than a controlled crash and how much night experience do this Chicom pilots have landing at night?
I look forward to her first periscope-portrait turned in by some hotshoe Los Angeles-class skipper. That will be a coup for whoever manages it first.
The Japanese lost dozens of planes and pilots during training accidents in 1943 in the runup to the Battle of the Philippine Sea ..... replacement Zero-drivers trying to fill billets left by the decedent pilots of Midway were crashing so often during landing attempts aboard moored carriers in safe anchorages, that the Imperial Naval Staff called off the exercises to reduce casualties and end the depressing spectacle.
As it turned out, their lack of landing skills didn't hurt them much after all .... in the "Marianas Turkey Shoot".
The Russians developed those engines, originally scaled-up from the mills they were installing in Tu-95 "Bears". They adapted them for naval use and built a class of subchasers they called Petya in the early 60's. These blew up so regularly -- and we're not talking fuel deflagration here, we're talking turbines coming apart at full power -- that the Sovs completed the class with diesels and called the new subclass Mirka ...... eventually they learned that the fuel was the problem, and they (no doubt stole samples) started brewing double-distilled, triple-rectified busthead with low vanadium. (Naturally-occurring vanadium was the culprit, hardening and embrittling the turbine vanes over time -- notice your favorite Ginsu knives sometime; they're stamped "vanadium steel", because the vanadium is what allows them to take and keep a fine edge, at the expense of some embrittlement.)
As my submarine friend said
What he said p
