Bert and Ernie
Bert and Ernie, Sesame Street's favorite longtime roommates, are not getting married -- because they're not gay, or straight, for that matter.
Earlier this month, inspired by New York state's recent legalization of gay marriage, an online petition argued the case that the popular Muppet characters wed one another.
But Sesame Workshop nixed that idea in a statement posted on the official Sesame Street Facebook page on Thursday:
"Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."
With over 8,000 total signatures, the original petition read: "We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful by allowing Bert and Ernie to marry. It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different. Let Sesame Street and PBS Kids be a big part in saving many worthy lives."
Stating the obvious!
What is it with people who are confused, wanting everyone else to be as confused as they are. I wonder if gays ever try to stuff food into their ears? Or, face down on the throne, believing it’s natural. What a mixed up group.
They are just peculiar and odd but not fruity.
The whole idea of sexualizing any and every friendship is disgusting.
This story made me hate liberals as much as anything ever has.
First they want to tax me, then they want to regulate every area of my life...
BUT TRYING TO INDOCTRINATE KIDS BY SUGGESTING BERT & ERNIE ARE GAY IS THE LOWEST!!!!
Why can’t they just let kids be kids instead of trying to confuse them? Watching Sesame Street as a child, I don’t recall ever giving too much thought to Bert and Ernie’s living situation.
Perfectly stated!
Frankly, I’m amazed.
I thought for sure that the NPR crowd would find in this an opportunity for one of their cherished “teachable moments.”
That's what I find repulsive, that they assume everyone is secretly like them.
They’re puppets, right?
This is another attempted blackmail. And they half capitulated. Yes. I too just assumed they would give in totally and have them get married or something. Thankfully the seem to have better sense. But by refusing to say that the characters are normal guys who are friends that doesn’t involve having sex with each other, i.e. (straight), they sort of tried to splt the difference. Instead of saying. oooh. gross. Shut up you freaks. They took the cowards way out. And tried not to offend.
The offensive need to called out for what they are. Offensive.
I realize this is easier said in this forum than done in their arena, but seriously. Sometimes these groups just cross the line.
Just thought you’d like to know. :P
Whew, what a relief!
Maybe I’ll stop having nightmares about it now.

Methinks they protest too much. Besides, Bert has a thing for Sponge Bob.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Bwany Fwank will be soooooo disapointed.
Thank you, Sesame Street, for leaving good things alone.
