Rep. Allen West has made a bold statement in the defense of LGBT rights, sort of. The Tea Party-backed Republican Congressman known for some controversial views explained local paper South Florida Sun-Sentinel that he believed that everyone has the same basic rights, but people can change their sexual behavior like any other behavior, not that he wanted them to do that.
I cant change my skin color, he explained to an off-camera interviewer, [but] people can change their sexual behavior Ive seen people do that.
He explained that, growing up in Georgia, he had a very different perspective on human behavior that made him believe homosexuality was a choice. That said, he didnt think it was a choice that should limit the rights people have in society.
Everyone has the same basic rights, and no one is telling people in the gay community that they dont have the same basic rights that any American has, he noted. Whats more, he elaborated that while he believed it to be a choice, he did not think it an inferior one that should be changed. No, I dont think that! he cried upon being asked.
I like chocolate chip ice cream, he said by way of analogy. I will continue to like chocolate chip ice cream, theres no worry about me changing to vanilla. Hes not about to trade in his motorcycle for a scooter, either, because Im not into that.
Not exactly the sort of riveting progressive statement the LGBT community is used to, nor did Rep. West explain how those beliefs translate to his position on gay marriage or when he chose to like chocolate chip ice cream.

That stupid comment just knocked him off my short list permanently.
Allen, stop eating ice cream. It has bad effects on your health and therefore imposes a societal cost. Your desire for personal pleasure has nothing to do with what should be allowed. Eat your peas.
He’ll get it from all sides for that comment.
I agree with him that BEHAVIOR is always a choice, including sexual behavior. If it were not, then rape could not be a crime.
I’m not sure what he is saying with the rest of his statement. He won’t be the nominee, so it may not matter much.
“Allen, stop eating ice cream. It has bad effects on your health and therefore imposes a societal cost”
QUOTETH THE REGULAR HAGEN DAZ CUSTOMER.
They sure don’t last long once they get to Congress.
West's mistake was to try to be conciliatory. That gave them an opening to make him look stupid.

Sadly,mine too. He looked promising.
Gays know that people can be talked into being gay—which is why they actively “recruit”. Lesbians are famous for their ability to turn it “on and off”. So, its really disingenuous to say that once you’re gay, you can’t ever go back.
“Allen West: Gays Shouldnt Change Their Choice Any More Than I Should Stop Eating Ice Cream “
... or pudding.
I wish somebody would finally have the guts to stand up and say, “Homosexuality gives most normal people the creeps, and normal people have the right to not be creeped out.”
He disappointed me here, but I still support him for his strong stance against illegal immigration and especially Islam.

Jeezz....give the guy a break......how superficial can you people be.
Indeed. Jaw-droppingly. The idea that people shouldn’t consider changing behavior that is objectively harmful to them and others is ... so typical of modern society that we might as well have this conversation with our catz, for all the good it will do.
“Jeezz....give the guy a break......how superficial can you people be.”
Apparently you are pretty “superficial” also.
From your about page, “Homosexuality, like Adultery, is a choice. And, like Adultery, a Bad One.”
He's off my list of future possibilities. Like Romney, I just won't ever be voting for this guy because I have no idea what he will do or say in the future.
Sigh.
