WASHINGTON Union officials say the result in Wisconsin's recall elections should send a stern warning to other lawmakers who might threaten collective bargaining rights.
But unions fell short of their goal by toppling only two of the six GOP state senators they targeted in Tuesday's voting. Some observers say the results show that labor's political clout isn't what it used to be.
The outcome could mean an uphill battle for union plans to take the fight to Ohio, where voters will decide in November whether to repeal that state's law curbing union rights.
Labor leaders insist their strong showing Tuesday bodes well for efforts to recall Wisconsin's Republican governor next year.
Unions poured millions into advertising and grass-roots organizing in Wisconsin and staked the reputation of labor's vaunted get-out-the-vote machine.
If I was part of the union I would be so PO’d! My dues go for this crap?!
The wealthy unions just spent 35 million dollars on just this one election.
That’s 29 % of the current deficit in Wisconsin.
The unions could have helped the teachers by paying for the new health care rates instead of a recall!
Union bluster a constant source of amusement . One of the republicans who lost has had the district he represented redrawn yesterday, this will be a republican pick up next election. There are also two democratic senators in a recall election next Tuesday . Good chance of at least one republican pickup there.
I believe that $35 million was the total spending for the recall elections, not all of that amount was spent by the unions.
Scot Walker for President!
I was wondering how redistricting will effect these elections. Have you seen any estimate of the overall impact that the new districts will have on the balance in the house and senate?
” My dues go for this crap?!”
And,,, as I understand it, dues are no longer automatically deducted from member’s paychecks. They now have to write a check to pay dues. That will get some of the thinkin’!
The people were elected on a platform of cutting tax’s . Why did the Unions think they could defeat them?
They did what they were asked to do.
The RATS been calling their epic failure a great victory. I wonder what it’s going to be when they I’ve back a seat next Tuesday.
if the deficit in Widconsin were 3` or 4 times 35 million, people would extatic. their budget defecit has to be in the billions or it is chump change....redo your math, the unions are idiots but they didn't spend THAT much
yes they do, but few union members know( their unions never tell them) that if you petition your union for a refund of ALL portions of your dues that were spent for political purposes, they MUST refund your dues to that extent. I did it, it worked fine, I was not popular, and I was on the joint council at the time!!!
