AHMEDABAD: The city police has begun phasing out the antiquated.303 rifle, often compared to the Lee Enfield guns used in World War-I, as part of its comprehensive anti-terror plan. In its place, the police will only be armed with much lighter automatic weapons like carbines, AK-47s and INSAS rifles.
City police commissioner Sudhir Sinha has also decided to deploy four commandos trained in antiterror tactics in all the police control room (PCR) vans. The city police had deployed 28 PCR vans after the July 26, 2008 serial bomb blasts. These vans used to have only 3 constables, including the driver and two constables with .303 rifles. The .303 rifles will be phased out gradually. This is a part of the lessons learnt from 26/11 when Mumbai police found itself suddenly fighting the LeT fidayeens with .303 rifles.

They can sell them to the London Police, which would upgrade said police’s ability to actually DO something 2000-fold.
Nothing wrong with the SMLE and with a bayonet it is a better riot control weapon than an AK. And an AK-47 is hardly a spring chicken.
If the Mumbai police had possessed some decent training and marksmanship, they COULD have taken down the baddies at the train station with aimed fire from their old antiques.
I read the eyewitness accounts, they cowered behind cover or ran away. They didn’t even try to shoot.
More up-to-date bang-bangs had better be accompanied by proper training or the only result will be higher civilian casualties due to spray-and-pray bullet hosing.
According to the MSM, those .303’s are deadly assault rifles, why upgrade?
It's just a shorter club if they are not given any ammunition.
No chit!
American hand gunners seem to all want big, bigger, biggest in their hand guns and some want big and bigger in their rifles. Military and police seem to have settled on 9mm (.354) for their handguns and 5.66mm (.223) in their rifles. I really am surprised that ANY militia or police still have a .303 in every day use except for very special uses.
I guess “Rule .303” will no longer apply. “Breaker” is sad.
I still remember the recoil from firing .303 rifle. It was huge!
With the Indians, I think it’s more of a money/budget issue.
Record Mad Minute set in 1914 by Sergeant Instructor Snoxall: 38 hits on a 12" target in a minute - and he did it at 300 yards

I have quite a collection and I honestly can say my MKIV .303 is right up there in my favorites. It shoots straight, smooth, and is just a natural shooter. I gave $75 for it and it looks and shoots like new. I wish they would make them available to American shooters, but I bet they cut them up.
He is not listed in the war death registry. His service and pension records are available for a fee so I did not look at those. Based on the the free death registry, however, it appears that he did survive. The previous record holder was cable of 37 in 60 seconds. Scores in the 30s were common. This record was found in a 1922 publication by the school so it appears valid.
I used to think the British .303 rifle was a butt-ugly rifle until I realized the practicality of its rugged and clever design. In some ways the best bolt-action battle rifle ever made. It is the only rifle that I know of where a headspace problem caused by a stretched receiver can be corrected in seconds by screwing a longer bolt head to the turn bolt. The Mauser cannot do that. The only fault I find with Enfields is the painful curved butt stock; it should have been flat like the Mauser’s.
