Rick Perry has been widely touted as a Republican presidential candidate who could appeal Tea Party voters, but some in the anti-tax movement wonder if his record as Texas governor stacks up to his rhetoric.
After all, they say, there are reasons to think he's a spendthrift. He once campaigned for Democrat Al Gore, reviled by the Tea Party for being Bill Clinton's vice president and for his campaigning on climate change, and he even spoke kindly about Hillary Clinton's healthcare reform efforts.
Then there is the issue that he was once a Democrat.
So as Perry plans the 2012 White House bid many observers expect he may announce as early as this week, some Tea Party faithful wonder what to make of him.
"They're vetting, they want to know if he is for real," Dallas Tea Party leader Katrina Pierson, said, adding she has fielded questions about Perry's record from Tea Party members as far flung as California, Iowa and New Hampshire.
Tea Party voters could have a big impact on the Republican nomination if they vote heavily in early U.S. primaries, which historically see low voter turn-out.
Perry "speaks the Tea Party language," said Sean Theriault, a political science professor at the University of Texas. But such rhetoric could alienate independent voters, who play a crucial role in U.S. presidential elections.
"I think the Republican nomination for him would be much easier than the general election," Theriault said.
Perry, who followed George W. Bush as Texas governor in 2000 after Bush was elected to the White House, has earned headlines for saying that perhaps Texas should leave the United States and for holding a prayer rally this month that drew 30,000 people.
He was an early booster of the fiscally conservative Tea Party movement, which takes its name

So his moves to support limits on abortion, to protect marriage in the Texas Constitution and to protect business, not to mention his willingness over the years to show up at prolife rally after conservative rally, etc., don’t mean “action” to you?
what is your opinion of this?
2001 TX State Budget 49 Billion.
2010 TX State Budget 90 Billion.
What if Rick does the same thing (% of Growth) to the Federal Budget?
Why would you expect the Leopard to change spots?
Big government RINO.
Just lucky Texas has oil money that’s financed his sending of Illegals to state universities at in-state tuition rates — just ONE big spending program has for Texas!
Have you noticed the ratio of Perry bashing to Palin bashing, though? Do you think we refrain from saying derogatory things about Sarah to be “safe?” Or could it be that we are proud of our conservative candidates and wish to build them up, rather than tear them and their supporters down.
Other people don’t have to be wrong for me to be right. I can be tall surrounded by tall neighbors.
“Theres something about him I just dont like or may be dont trust.”
Same here. I’ve felt the same way since I first saw him.
&&&
Ditto. Every time I see him on the news, the word “phony” comes to ming.
wow.. Obama is a disaster for this country. an outright disaster. If he is not whipped in this next election, then that is the ballgame for America. I firmly believe that.
And yes McCain would have been Bush light, as some of you folks are calling Perry. But with McCain we wouldn’t have the earmarks, the spending, the war against business, the appeasement of our foreign enemies, and last but not least we would not have the biggest disaster of all: Obamacare.
I’ll take any Repub candidate over this horrible President, including Perry.
as usual, there are a lot of purists here at FR.. if he’s not 100% with the entire conservative platform, including all the social issues, then he isn’t good enough.
Palin is NOT running. I don’t see it.. and God forbid if she does, because she will lose, and lose big. she will win 1 state: Alaska.
Why not just vote for Bachmann, Palin, Cain, or even Paul, rather than take a pig in a poke? Bachman is Tea Party and I’m sure if Palin runs, she won’t dis the Tea Party. I know for a fact that Perry will go along to get along for the first 6 months,...after that, anybody’s guess. Bachmann and Palin are the real deal. If the Tea Party want to get more of their agenda enacted, then why water down the vote? Go for the real deal now. If we switch to Perry, we will just watch the Republic slide further down the ditch at a slower pace.
Oh, PUH-LEEZE. Yep, Perry was such a conservative Democrat he endorsed DUKAKIS and GORE...and as a Republican, endorsed GIULIANI. Yeah, ol’ Rick the recovering Democrat is practically John Birch himself resurrected, he’s so conservative. /sarc
And as to his electability, well, why would anyone care if Perry can beat Obama if he’s just going to be another Dubai-portin’ border-opening Assistant Democrat? Based upon his record in Texas, where he has shown ZERO leadership in shrinking government, or devolving power to the local level, or even asking the feds to do their jobs at the border, he will be nothing but another staunch unitary government fan if he is elected to federal office. He’s only butted heads with Obama when it suited him to do so politically—he sure hasn’t put up any border fences or acted to compel Texas law enforcement to inquire about immigration status.
Yeah, Perry has a resume, and if anyone actually reads it, it’d be obvious Perry isn’t the man for the Presidency. Hell, he probably wouldn’t even be GOVERNOR now if Debra Medina hadn’t stumbled over the truther issue back in the last primary. Heck, so-called genius campaigner Perry had to have a three-way race to keep himself in the picture against a lefty fool like Bill White—IN TEXAS!
What does it take to shut you shills up? Actions speak louder than words! The man is only a conservative when it serves his purpose—in this case, when an election is near.
We are doing fine. Thanks
Your link says just the opposite of your claim:
“In the 32 reports confirmed, there was no unusual pattern or clustering to the deaths that would suggest that they were caused by the vaccine and some reports indicated a cause of death unrelated to vaccination.”
Every woman and girl that you know that had treatment for abnormal cells on her pap had HPV. Were they all irresponsible? (Just for your information, Every girl under 21 that I’ve sent for treatment was raped before she was 15 - they were not “irresponsible.” )
I don’t feel the need to bash anyone, to be honest. I’m pretty confident in the capability of my candidate to win the nomination.
I adore palin, but I think she would lose Alaska too
Governor Sarah Palin’s Endorsement of Governor Rick Perry (for re-election as TX Gov), 2009
http://www.rickperry.org/palin-letter
“Rick Perry is true to conservative principles even when others think the party needs to go a different direction. I like that about him: he doesn’t care which way the wind blows, he acts on his beliefs.
That’s why I am supporting Governor Rick Perry for re-election. He does what is right regardless of whether it is popular. He walks the walk of a true conservative. And he sticks to his guns - and you know how I feel about guns!”
You don’t seem to understand, Pnsn. The Legislature made the law requiring mandated vaccines and changing from opt in to “opt out” and then making the rules more and more restrictive.
In the meantime, the Feds had already made sure that Medicaid and the Vaccines for Children program would offer Gardasil free of charge to everyone except those girls with insurance that paid for mandatory vaccines. Texas is required by law to pay our share of these vaccines.
The Governor tried to make it possible for girls whose parents have insurance that pays for vaccines to get this vaccine if the parents want it. If any parent does not want the vaccine - or any of them - the Governor told the director of the DSHS to make it easier to obtain the form for opting out.
As one of “We the People,” I see that the Governor increased freedom, rather than limit it.
I’m still waiting for my candidate to declare - or maybe for two people to declare and then I’ll have to choose. It’s a shame that the bashers can’t at least stick to the Dems and the current administration.
Yeah. Time to do the Bull Ship Dance. Beware if the kids are still up. Lots of the S word:

As I wrote, he’s the Governor and has certain ceremonial duties. Signing bills and meeting with the Texans who supported the bills is one of those duties.
Reelect Barack Obama
He’d be better than Romney.

(these lines refer to Bilderberg exposer Jim Tucker) ...Framed front pages of big news stories of days gone by lined the walls. "War in the Persian Gulf!" "Thatcher Resigns!" Jim said that both acts were orchestrated by Bilderberg. "Margaret Thatcher is one of the good guys," said Jim. "Bilderberg ordered her to dismantle British sovereignty, but she said no way, so they had her sacked."
"Currently, Bilderberg member Kenneth Clarke and non-Bilderberg member Ian Duncan Smith are fighting a battle to represent the Conservative 'opposition' party to Labour. I sincerely hope he doesn't, but Kenneth Clarke will win that battle. Then we will have leaders of the two 'opposition' parties who are in actual fact not in 'opposition' at all. Margaret Thatcher has expressed her support for non-Bilderberg member Smith. Why? Because Bilderberg took the decision to oust Margaret Thatcher and replace her with John Major. This was confessed by Thatcher in conversation with Jim Tucker"

Maggie did attend Bilderberg, I grant you, but she was patriotic to her country, and paid the price. I assume Rick Perry is aware enough to know how the game is played.
Sarah Palin doesn't seek "help" from secretive cabals. She's going to go in front of the American people, say what she truly believes, and ask for their vote. She has mine.
