Obama Cancels Trip to Discuss Fuel Efficiency
White House Dossier ^ | Aug. 9, 2011 | Keith Koffler

Posted on 08/09/2011 7:45:51 AM PDT by COUNTrecount

The White House is starting to get smart.

President Obama this morning canceled his scheduled trip to a company in Springfield, Va. – not far from the White House – to discuss fuel efficiency standards for heavy duty vehicles. Engaging in this bit of relative trivia while the economy is in such peril would have been about as appropriate as inviting a hypnotist to a funeral.

Instead, Obama will meet with industry officials behind closed doors at the White House.

If they want to really get smart, Obama aides will cancel his bus trip next week as well. The sight of the president on an obvious campaign swing through the Midwest on some stupid bus at taxpayers expense is sure to invite torrents of deserved derision.

He plans to meet privately today with Treasury Secretary Geithner. That session should be opened for statements either before or after they talk.

What’s less clear to me is why the briefing has also been cancelled. It could be they’re going to put Obama before the cameras in some capacity. Stay tuned.

“fuel efficiency”???? During these times, why is he so concerned about this? Another back breaking policy for the American people?

Dam Sam. I’ve been on pins and needles waiting for the president to talk about fuel efficiency standards in trucks. Now I will have to wait longer to find out what he thinks about trucks getting better mileage. (sarcasm)

Are these EPA regulations which the EPA decided to issue on its own?

Why do these bureaucrats have the authority to do this? Correct me if I’m wrong, but, shouldn’t there be an act of Congress if we’re going to jack up mileage standards? In other words, shouldn’t these bureaucrats be under the oversight of Congress, rather than just doing whatever they want, with a wink and nod from a liberal president?

Is this more pie in the sky liberal environmentalism? I’m all in favor of getting better gas mileage, but, not sure we need more and more government mandates on the subject.

And Obama “talking about fuel efficiency” has how much to do with technologically feasible “fuel efficiency”, or with achieving any measure of such efficiency - zilch, zero, nada.

A 65 mpg standard for 18-wheelers should do the trick. Pass the law...just git ‘er done.

Who needs products delivered to the local stores anyway?

Government can only do so much on managing energy consumption/production.

You can build bullet trains that no one will ride.

You can build windmills until there’s rolling blackouts because of unreliable generation.

You issue rediculous miles per gallon “standards” that will never be met, or would be met on their own.

So backing away from yet another worthless energy industry gesture is the right thing to do.

And Obama “talking about fuel efficiency...

He could segue into his favorite meme, taking jets away from the rich, yeah, that will solve our problems.

I keep imagining an intervention where a group of talented and powerful patriots march into the Oval Office and announce that they are taking over to put the nation back on track.
