Vigilantes were forced onto the streets last night to protect their homes and businesses after police failed to materialise at many of the scenes of looting and violence which swept across London.
As officers lost control of the streets locals were forced to take the law into their own hands, arming themselves with sticks and chasing looters away from their properties.
In Dalston and Hackney, north-east London, Turkish shopkeepers and their families fought back against looting youths, before spending the night standing shoulder-to-shoulder in an attempt to deter further attacks. One man said: 'This is Turkish Kurdish area. They come to our shops and we fight them with sticks.' Despite increasing calls for the police to get tough with the rioters, Home Secretary Theresa May today sparked anger as she appeared to dismiss the notions that water cannons and even the Army could be used to ensure violent scenes are not repeated tonight.
As police were slammed for appearing to let looters run riot under their noses, Mrs May instead advocated a more softly-softly approach.
She said: 'The way we police in Britain is not through use of water cannon. The way we police in Britain is through consent of communities.'

Another elected official that has become deranged...with the bs propaganda fed to her
The incident is still in question. I haven’t heard of rampant police harassment in London. Yet you’re sympathies go to the rioters who are burning and pillaging their neighbors homes and businesses?
you’re should be your.
Good on ya'. I live in a Redneck Hillbilly area. They come here and we fight them with rifles. Too bad you Turkish Kurds are forced to rely on sticks, though. Rifles are more effective.
no, my “sympathies don’t go to the rioter.”
However, I do NOT believe the answer is for government agents to mow people down. This is not something that can be solved with a Dr Laura answer.......e.g. “Mow them down”.
You have to think about reestablishing peace.......have you ever been in the military? You know there are Civil Affairs units that study how to get things running again after an issue?
You don’t just mow them down. Then what? Body bags, funerals, spreading of the problem, more people upset and turning to lawlessness. There actually are more useful ways to analyze the countermeasures that could be implemented to restore order.
Sheesh, I can’t believe the dumb things people have suggested as solutions to this issue.
Yeah, it IS criminal and awful what has happened to people’s businesses and personally. But you really think “Mow them down” solves anything? It could make things WORSE hello.
Those Koreans look determined. Good for them. Many come here, work damned hard, and protect themselves from rioters. My kind of people.
The shooting of one person who may have had a gun is not “mowing down” the people of London.
When was the last police shooting in that city?
Do you not understand mob mentality?
And if someone was burning down my home or looting my business I would hope the police would put that person in a body bag.
I guess you would make them a cup of coffee? HELLO??
We are not talking about rioting to overthrow a corrupt government.
When someone is engaged in looting and burning, he is a criminal-period.
The police abused their power and authority by summarily executing without a trial someone they wanted to arrestAnd you KNOW this is true because you were THERE, right? You WITNESSED it.
No. The fact is, you know NOTHING. All you KNOW is that there are riots and that innocent people are losing lots of property (at the risk of their lives). That's the only thing you KNOW. The rest is all Bullsh*t conjecture. Bullsh*t conjecture that you are more than happy to buy into.
It depends on the degree of mowing. As Machiavelli said, "do not do your enemy a small injury".
In 1918, Germany experienced a degree of mowing that may have made an impact on the returning veterans, but not on the people who stayed home and only read about the war in the newspapers. The result was that within 20 years they were back for more.
The experiences of 1944-45, Dresden, devastation of the countryside, etc, etc, made a more lasting impression, resulting in a disinterest for war lasting for many generations.
You are correct in that things have gotten to the point where just a few body bags will do more harm than good. Where I disagree with you is in the estimation of the number of body bags that will be needed.
It will. Remember those clowns now looting and rioting get to vote.
Reminds me of that Monty Python skit: "Stop! Or I'll yell 'stop' again!"I would LOL... if it wasn't all so sad.
Well at least they seem to have gotten the vicious gangs of "Keep Left" signs under control.
Are you saying that the man who was shot did NOT fire a weapon at a police officer? Because all of the reportage I’ve had a chance to look at said the dead guy fired a gun at an undercover officer, with the bullet lodging in the LEO’s car. Was that reporting incorrect?
I believe him. Ergo....believable.
That is true to a point . Riots are not a orderly society, the rights of ALL citizens are to be protected. How is not suppressing the riot protecting the rights of the ordinary peaceable citizen.
Answer : It doesn’t! The chaos of the riots feeds of the lack of vigorous response & increases as we have seen after 3 days the chaos has spread to other cities in England. Civilization is a very thin veneer poured over the mass of humanity & it is kept their by force not overbearing force but force of law as applied by the police & the courts that administer law.
If the law of the jungle is allowed to take root no ones rights are safe including yours.
The riot started because a cop shot a thug. The cop shot the thug because the thug shot at the cop.
The Brits are really soft on crime but even fluffy bunnies have their limit.
