House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R., Wis.), a top choice among Republicans for a deficit-cutting super-committee formed last week, on Sunday sought to tamp down expectations for the panel.
I dont think a grand bargain is going to come out of this, Mr. Ryan said on Fox News Sunday. He said that any deal for more than the $1.5 trillion in deficit-reduction over 10 years that the committee is charged with finding would depend on whether Democrats were willing to agree to overhaul entitlement programs. I dont see any agreement from the other side getting anywhere close to doing that, he said.
Congress created the special, bipartisan committee last week as part of the deficit-reduction package that paved the way for an increase in the federal debt ceiling. After Standard & Poors last week downgraded U.S. government debt, citing a lessening of confidence in the political system to deal with deficits, the focus turned to the super committee and its ability to come up with a big deficit-cutting deal.
People are overemphasizing what this committee is going to achieve, Mr. Ryan said.
I want to make sure people understand that I dont think this is going to be a committee that is going to fix all our fiscal problems, he said.
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.), speaking on ABCs This Week, said that I do believe that committee can function and be successful in the limited goal weve given them.

Paul Ryan Ping List!
When will the Patriots left in this country realize that these guys, Ryan, included are just as much the problem as our PINO - this is about our Nation’s very survival and they’re talking about bandaids and patience, no sense of urgency at all. A pox on all their houses. Traitors!
$1.5 trillion in deficit-reduction over 10 years
Let's say I've got $30,000 on my Visa card. I've been paying the minimum every month for 5 years. But don't worry! I've got a plan to come up with more money which I can put toward debt reduction -- I'm going to skip buying lattes at Starbucks (at least on Tuesdays).
I hope that Tim Ryan is included on that committee.
...and Connie Mack.
It ignores trillions more in unfunded entitlement liabilities. The real number is north of $60 trillion.
I don't understand the hatred for the Republicans like Paul Ryan who have put their necks out with specific plans to tackle debt, tackle entitlements rather than focusing on Obama, Reid and the rest.
The saying goes, "With friends like these, who needs enemies?"
I'm starting to think some posters would be attacking soldiers landing at Normandy for not advancing on the Germans fast enough.
They need to be encouraged for taking these stands, they're demonized enough from the Left.
There's important stuff coming up. There's the settling behind a particular Balanced Budget Amendment and pressing ahead with the vote on it.
There's a vote coming to change from the status quo of baseline budgeting (7.5% automatic increases) to zero-based budgeting (every dollar must be justified). Rep Louis Gohmert (R-TX) got a promise from Ryan to pass it out of the budget committee and commitment from Boehner to bring it to the floor.
These votes won't amount to anything if Democrats succeed in divide-and-conquer. They're doing a great job at it. People need to focus on the Democrats' obstructionism the rather than undermining those trying to move your agenda forward.
