Studies: Global warming, climate science far from settled

In the face of repeated assertions that the science on global warming is “settled,” ongoing studies and developments in the area leave some insisting that claim remains true, while others say the science is anything but.

According to Gallup’s annual environmental poll, the percentage of Americans saying they worry a great deal or a fair amount about global warming has fallen from a high of 66 percent in 2008 to a stable 51 percent in 2011. Furthermore, 43 percent of Americans say the seriousness of global warming is exaggerated in the news.

A breakdown of global warming poll data shows that the issue remains mainly ideological, with 72 percent of Democrats saying they worry about global warming compared to 51 percent of Independents and 31 percent of Republicans.

As the global warming debate becomes more politicized in individual attitudes, state governments, Congress and even within the United Nations, the possibility of the science becoming truly “settled” appears unlikely.

In a study published July 25 in the science journal Remote Sensing, William Braswell and Roy Spencer, a principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and a former senior scientist for climate studies at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, suggest the Earth’s atmosphere is more efficient at releasing energy into space than models used to forecast climate change have been programmed to “believe.”

The result, Spencer says, is that climate forecasts are warming substantially faster than the atmosphere.

“At the peak, satellites show energy being lost while climate models show energy still being gained,” Spencer said.

In short, Forbes reports, while global warming theory states that carbon dioxide emissions should be trapping a certain amount of heat in the earth’s atmosphere and preventing it from escaping into space, real-world measurements show far less heat is being trapped than computer models predict...

It is settled. There is no man made global warming.

We’re still in an ice age.

Time to "calibrate" the satellites.

You are correct.

An interglacial period within an ice age. In the past it has been much, much hotter.

And...

In the past it has been much, much cooler...

What’s worse is the average interglacial period is about 10,000 years and we’ve been in the current one about 13,000 years... If it ends, really when it ends, its going to get damn cold and billions will starve.

Just in case anyone’s worried that the American Academy of Family Physicians is not grounded in reality: http://www.aafp.org/afp/2011/0801/p271.html

There’s even a patient handout, calling for patients to eat less meat, so we have less cows and less “greenhouse gases”:

Science is supposed to be testing a hunch by trying something that would normally fail if your hunch were not true. Junk science is about protecting a hunch by rationalizing how it could still be true after it guessed wrong and actively discrediting any who doubt.

In America scientific principles are determined democratically, by polls. That is so much fairer than having them dictated to us by God or something.

I thought it was “settled” that the whole “global warming” scare was a scam from the beginning, designed only to grab trillions of US tax dollars and “redistribute” them globally? You mean it’s not settled? Somebody is actually trying to keep that scam alive?

That would be like Bernie Madoff trying to convince his fellow prisoners to give him all their contraband cigarettes so he could “invest” them and return twice as many to everybody.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudoscience

Pseudoscience is a claim, belief, or practice which is presented as scientific, but which does not adhere to a valid scientific method, lacks supporting evidence or plausibility, cannot be reliably tested, or otherwise lacks scientific status.[1] Pseudoscience is often characterized by the use of vague, exaggerated or unprovable claims, an over-reliance on confirmation rather than rigorous attempts at refutation, a lack of openness to evaluation by other experts, and a general absence of systematic processes to rationally develop theories.

A field, practice, or body of knowledge can reasonably be called pseudoscientific when it is presented as consistent with the norms of scientific research; but it demonstrably fails to meet these norms.[2] Science is also distinguishable from revelation, theology, or spirituality in that it offers insight into the physical world obtained by empirical research and testing.[3] Commonly held beliefs in popular science may not meet the criteria of science.[4] "Pop" science may blur the divide between science and pseudoscience among the general public, and may also involve science fiction.[4] Pseudoscientific beliefs are widespread, even among public school science teachers and newspaper reporters.[5]

No, we've found that Garlic-fed cows combat global warming and we'll just research what we can feed cattle to boost flatulence. Problem solved. Bovine nutritional supplements have far more effect on the earth's temperature than the sun and its cycles do, just ask any modern scientist (generally they are experts on bovine excrement, but they have branched out recently).
