Matt Damon on debt limit: 'I'm so disgusted,' 'it's criminal' wealthy are not paying higher taxes

Academy award-winning actor Matt Damon said he is "so disgusted" with what's happening in Washington over the debt limit, claiming that the Tea Party is "willing to drive it all off a cliff" and adding that it's "criminal" the wealthy are not paying higher taxes.

"I'm so disgusted man. I mean, no, I don't know what you do in the face of that kind of intransigence. You know, so my heart does go out to the President. He is dealing with a lot," Damon said in an exclusive interview at the "Save Our Schools March" in Washington, D.C. on Saturday.

When asked if he agrees with President Obama's call for a "balanced approach" as part of a deal to raise the debt limit, Damon said, "Yes, the wealthy are paying less than they've paid in any time else, certainly in my lifetime."

He continued, "It's criminal that like, you know, so little is asked of people who are getting so much, I mean, I don't mind paying more. I really don't mind paying more taxes. I'd rather pay for taxes than cut like 'Reading is Fundamental' or 'Head Start' or some of these programs that are really helping kids. I mean, why not? This is the greatest country in the world. Is it that much worse if you pay 6 percent more in taxes? Give me a break. You know, look at what you get for it. You get to be American."

Damon did not say the highest percentage he would be willing to pay in taxes but argued for tax reform.

"I mean, why not raise it per million bucks? Right? And then cap it somewhere," he said.

Damon also said those making over $250,000 per year are not job creators.

"Nobody went and started a business with their Bush tax cut. You know, I don't know who would believe something – that just defies common sense so no, that's – no. I was against those tax cuts. I thought they were ridiculous. So little is asked of the upper class anyway, you know. I mean, what percent of them or their kids are fighting in any of these wars?" he said.

Damon also called the Tea Party "completely intransigent" in terms of the debt ceiling debate.

"It's true. They are absolutely willing to drive it all off a cliff. They mean what they say, that's for sure," he said.

Somewhere a village has lost its idiot.

The semi-hysteric tone of his comments, suggests that his Leftist slant is compulsion driven. In other words, we have a spoiled neurotic seeking to prove his worth by espousing his egalitarian fanaticism with a bit of added zest. You can be virtually certain that he could not explain how his premises--a make believe world of Lenin's useful idiots or Keynes' fools, in which the successful only get that way by exploiting the unsuccessful--actually support his conclusions.

The bottom line is that not only are those premises false; not only do they promote great mischief in society in general; but no one but demagogues & scoundrels benefits from what they advocate.

See Egalitarian Collectivism Sabotages Human Potential. By the way, would anyone consider it tolerable if a wealthy neighbor offered to pay your son or daughter, not to work; not to marry; not to try to excel! That is what egalitarian demagogues like Obama offer to American families.

Enough is enough.

That’s why I never even watched any of his movies since Bourne 1...
Damn proud of it. Even if it was available for download on torrent, I wouldn’t waste my bandwidth on this scumbag.

Exactly. I did watch Bourne 2, but that was it for me and my honey. If his name is even attached to a film, we move on.

That's an excellent rebuttal, which he and those like him will always ignore.

The big (not so) secret is that Matt Damon doesn't want the government to confiscate more money from him, he wants the government to steal money from other people.

He feels guilty about the wealthy world he moves through, but not guilty enough to actually give away his membership in that wonderful club.

#1, I don’t have a clue who Matt is or what movie[s] he has been, so I could care less.

BTW Matt, why don’t you just write a big fat check to Uncle Sam and include my tax payments?

I suspect so. Like most of the "beautful people' of our society.

Damon just giving a BJ to his Hollyweird supporters. The industry is the same as always - just what it takes to get a job has changed - for some.

He wants to be popular with the lefties who run the show out there - so he gives out the sound bites.

There is nothing special about the guy - half my friends are bigger, stronger, smarter, and better looking.

He is just the modern “hero” type of white American male hollyweird wants - a metrosexual - not really very tough, with the mental faculties of a 16 year old girl.

My SIL posted a “what would Jesus cut” rant on Facebook. I replied back with that link. She started in on my “top 2% wage earner ‘friends.’” I told her I didn’t post that for my “friends,” I posted it for her and her friends. She made a half-hearted attempt at sounding logical and thanked me for the discussion. It was the lamest retreat I’ve seen in a while, especially for a loud-mouthed lib.

Somebody should tell Matt Damon that his hero claimed deductions and "only" paid a 23% federal income tax.

Obama also itemized his deductions, reporting deductions for state income taxes, property taxes, mortgage interest and charity. The Obamas paid federal income taxes of $416,734, roughly 23% of their total income. Obama also contributed to the maximum to a pre-tax retirement plan based his self-employed book proceeds.
