Police: Woman Twice Told Burglar To Leave, Then Shot Him (OH)

NEWPORT -- A woman told a burglar to leave twice before shooting him in the head, Newport police said Monday.

Phyllis Maloney, 63, told officers that a man she did not know walked in the back door of her home at 16th and Monmouth at about 1 a.m.

Maloney said she told the man to leave, but he refused, even moving to touch her. She said she backed up and got a gun out of a drawer and pointed it at him, again telling him to leave.

When the man refused a second time and started moving toward her, Maloney said, she fired the gun. A neighbor's surveillance camera captured the flash of the gunshot.

"She's just the sweetest lady, and how brave of her, to have to do what she did," said neighbor Audra Baker.

The man, Jordan Risheberger, 21, wearing only boxer shorts, was found dead in a front room.

Newport police are still investigating the incident.

Overly generous and polite, IMO.

Newort, KY, hard underbelly of Cincinnati,OH. No charges filed, and unlikely they will be. Folks grow up with firearms in this area, and have deep rooted ideas of self-protection, castle doctrine.

What’s your point? You are evidently unaware that a good number of rape victims are senior citizens, and the rapists can be much, much younger.

And pssst - since you don’t know: rape isn’t about sex, it’s about rage, humiliation and dominance.

She shot him after telling him to leave twice. I would have shot him in the head twice and then told him to leave.

go back and read the thread...other articles posted...he wandered away from a nearby party...cops are calling it a double tragedy. I am sure tox screens will show he was high/drunk, but a rapist? not sure the victim even alleged that.

“21 yo rapist, 63 yo victim?”

Not uncommon. Near us, we read of two rapes in a nursing home. The rapist was able to break into the home on two occasions and rape two elderly women. (if memory serves me correctly, one woman was in her 90’s). The rapist’s description of age was between 20 and 30.

where were the rest of his clothes? There may be more to this than meets the eye......

Yeah. I'm guessing a 12-pack of Budweiser or a bottle of Mad Dog.

I know some really hot 63 yr. old women (including my wife), and knew some when I was in my 20’s as well.......

Anyway, I would assume “hot” isn’t always the key criteria for a rapist.... cannot imagine the real motivation of a rapist, but they say it is really a power thing....not sex...

The world is a better place today, by a factor of 1.

Wish we had A LOT more good stories like this, for two reasons. One, I like happy endings and two - there is a lot of room for improvement in the world.

She did her part, God bless her.

“... I would assume “hot” isn’t always the key criteria for a rapist... but they say it is really a power thing... not sex”.

I worked in a hospital during college and saw the rape victims that the ambulance/medic unit would bring in. I can honestly tell you that it isn’t a “hot” thing. Various ages, weight, etc... (from a young teen to a 70+ year old). One woman that I recalled was even visibly pregnant. Some were visibly bruised and beaten. Some were beaten beyond recognition and clinging on to dear life. I won’t get into it graphically, but one poor soul has a broken jaw, broken eye socket, dislocated shoulder... and had immediate surgery to stop internal bleeding. So, no... it isn’t about sex. It’s about violence. IMHO

His clothes are probably hidden outside where he could quickly dress after murdering her and get away with no blood on his clothes. All he had to do was pick up a kitchen knife and stab her after raping her.

I doubt rape was the motive, since neither the victim and nor the police have said so..... it seems he was at a local party and wandered off....cops calling it a tragedy for both the woman and the deceased. more info at link

Yep. I hope it is a clean shoot. But the police need to investigate this. Why was her door not locked? A head shot?

If this guy was some kind of serial sex offender he got what he deserved. Hell, if he just truly broke into her house uninvited he got what he deserve. But there are some things not said in this report that needs further inquiry.

Why was her door not locked?

Why does it have to be locked? No need to lock your doors, I call BS on that question.

A head shot?

Good gun control. If you are going to shoot do it right.

Twice?? Twice hell, one warning, then three closely spaced shots.

Done and done!

Way to go, ma'am!

I do hope that this guy was, in fact, a burglar. In most parts of the country, the same folks who forced the mentally ill out of the state institutions are now forcing the closure of institutions for the developmentally disabled and forcing them into community care “homes.”

I know someone in this very situation. The liberals want him to be “free” and in the community rather than in the institution where he has lived for over 40 years. He has the mental capacity of a 18 month old child, but is very good at sneaking out, especially since the homes are forbidden to lock the doors securely. I could easily see this happening to him when he ends up in one of these “homes.” He wouldn’t even understand what the lady was saying to him. It’s just such a tragedy waiting to happen.

You might want to change your title and keywords. Newport is in Kentucky, across the river from Cincinnati.
