Health insurance plans must cover birth control as preventive care for women, with no copays, the Obama administration said Monday in a decision with far-reaching implications for health care as well as social mores.
The requirement is part of a broad expansion of coverage for women's preventive care under President Barack Obama's health care law. Also to be covered without copays are breast pumps for nursing mothers, an annual "well-woman" physical, screening for the virus that causes cervical cancer and for diabetes during pregnancy, counseling on domestic violence, and other services.
"These historic guidelines are based on science and existing (medical) literature and will help ensure women get the preventive health benefits they need," said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
The new requirements will take effect Jan. 1, 2013, in most cases. Tens of millions of women are expected to gain coverage initially, and that number is likely to grow with time. At first, some plans may be exempt due to a complex provision of the health care law known as the "grandfather" clause. But those even plans could face pressure from their members to include the new benefit.

Is this really what insurance is for? Covering day to day consumables?
I’m with ya.
:]
Is men's birth control covered without co-pay?
Doesn’t mean that the insurance company would cover the good stuff. Medicaid sure doesn’t.
I agree.
Paying for people who refuse to keep their pants up.
I see all these special bennies for women. What will men get with no copay?
Obama playing the uterus card.
I think his favorite game is Divide and Conquer. Or Red Tide.
Well, at least I can hope they put this under mental healthcare coverage where it belongs.

Now they will be co-horts in sin? The killing of children?
Cap the spending and cut this program.
This is interesting—my generic bc pill is $10/mo copay; if it is to be now “free,” am I free to now choose “Seasoneque” instead, which is a much more expensive bc pill?
Not 30 minutes ago a clinic tried to give our girl Gardisil. I told them to jam it back up their hypodermic needle. I'm basically on probation-trespass with that clinic already because of the last run-in about swine-flu vaccine, so maybe they will blacklist me now.
If birth control is health care, then so are haircuts.
They are both by choice, they don’t involve any illness, and they both result from the body acting exactly as it’s supposed to.
MEDICARE now- you get ONE through physical upon entry to the progarm... very limited “wellness checks” thereafter
As my husband’s doctor said at his recent- and last -insurance covered annual physical: “WELCOME TO MEDICARE”
So we will still do annual physicals. Just have to go pay cash... until the govt tells docs they aren’t allowed to give physicals to seniors, even for cash- that day will come
Kinda cynical eh? No physicals means less tests for conditions they discover, govt “saves money”
it also means you probably won’t have something detected until you have symptoms- more people will die sooner, as is our civic duty
Welcome to Eugenics and population control.
ask your own doctor
Yeah, just as I thought ... blowin’ smoke.
