GOP on verge of huge, unprecedented political victory
The Washington Post ^ | 07/31/2011 | Greg Sargent

Posted on 07/31/2011 4:21:56 PM PDT by MinorityRepublican

By all accounts, it looks like a deal is about to be announced in which the debt ceiling is hiked in exchange for the promise of major spending cuts, including to entitlements, totalling at least $2.4 trillion.

Anything can happen, but it apppears the GOP is on the verge of pulling off a political victory that may be unprecedented in American history. Republicans may succeed in using the threat of a potential outcome that they themselves acknowledged would lead to national catastrophe as leverage to extract enormous concessions from Democrats, without giving up anything of any significance in return.

Not only that, but Republicans — in perhaps the most remarkable example of political up-is-downism in recent memory — cast their willingness to dangle the threat of national crisis as a brave and heroic effort they’d undertaken on behalf of the national interest. Only the threat of national crisis could force the immediate spending cuts supposedly necessary to prevent a far more epic crisis later.

Under the emerging deal, President Obama can hike the debt limit in two stages — the first in exchange for equivalent cuts; the second after a Congressional committee comes up with second round of yet more cuts, including to entitlements. The talks appear close to resolving the spending cut“trigger” that would force the committee to act — without giving the GOP an incentive to deliberately sabotage its work. The remaining question is how to get it through the House. But a deal seems immiment.

Again and again, Dems drew lines in the sand that they promptly erased as the threat of default grew. A clean debt ceiling hike? Dropped. Cuts to Medicare benefits? They’ll likely be in that committee’s crosshairs. The insistence on revenue hikes? Withdrawn.

Dont care if Reaid or Bohner win or lose.

We must win.

Our Kids must win.

Half of the children born today ( only half of Americans pay taxes ) already are already in debt to the tune of $92,000.00 dollars.
Nancy wants to add $9,000 dollars raising the debt to $101,000 dollars.

This figure does not include the annual taxes owed.

Nancy is puzzled about the fight to raise the debt- “why now, why this president?”

Pelosi is unaware of the current economic climate Americans are faced with.

Any spin that favors us is good. People generally remember winners and losers not the minutiae of a deal. In 95/96 the GOP got its head handed to it by the Clinton machine who was able to sell the story of the GOP as dangerous radicals bent on shutting down the government.

I remember during the 1992 Gore constantly crapped on Bush for the “largest tax increase in history”. Never mind that Gore voted for it. Of course the press never mentioned that fact.

totalling at least $2.4 trillion.

If it's this much then it takes them out past the 2012 elections... and Barry wins.

All the rest is so much garbage that will become null and void with the next election.

From the Compost?

Then this has to be the biggest loss that the Republican Party has ever snatched from the jaws of victory.

Likely there will be more Whigs than Republicans in November of 2016.

I have to think about it.

Are they trying to blame the stinker of the deal on the Republicans so that when America finds out what a truly horrible thing it is the Republicans take the heat?

Yes.

Wait.

See.

Obama rails against millionaire and billionaires. Congress is loaded with these. Let’s start a drive to limit Congressional pay and benefits If anyone !does not need these benefits, it is Pelosi, Feinstein Kerry, and all other 70 and z80 year old senators who are loaded they of all people know they do not need It. No more pay than a janitor gets.

That is almost exactly what's going on. Just substitute Tea Party for Republicans.

The word has been sent out by the Obama Administration to play up the "Republican victory" and MSM lapdogs are following orders. Part II will come nearer to the election.

yes. your analysis is correct.

the Washington Post, believes conservatives are stupid.

the Post is basically ignoring a gun running scandal, that is worse than Watergate, worse than Iran-contra, worse than Teapot dome!

yet they take time, to tell the world, of the great Republic victory ?!?

if any conservative DOES believe the Post...

Good God! The left will say anything, do anything, to get their money fix. This is too funny. Hell if somebody suggested that the NYT and WaPo shut down in return for the debt limit raise, they might consider it, That is how desperate the left is, pathetic.

The fiscal mess we are in is a result of 80 years of big government spending starting with FDR in the 1930’s.

We aren’t going to be able to reverse that aircraft carrier in 12 months by simply chanting tea party slogans. This is going to be a three to five year process. Today’s agreement was an important step forward.

The libs are on the run here. They all assumed Obama could waive his magic Clinton wand and get all sorts of new taxes imposed as part of this deal. Instead Obama was made to look even more ineffective.

The next step in this is the 2012 campaign. We need to retake the White House and Senate. Then we can beat the crap out of the McConnell, McCain, RINO wing to implement serious cuts and reform.

‘exchange for the promise of major spending cuts’

The word promise of future spending cuts coming from a politician is BS. Throw out most of the incumbents except for a handful.
