SPIEGEL ONLINE ^ | 07/29/2011 | Gregor Peter Schmitz

America's Founding Fathers thought of everything. They wanted to establish several centers of power in Washington rather than just one. They wanted the occupant of the White House to be strong, but Congress was to have the power to check that strength. The friction between Capitol Hill and the White House -- a product of this system of checks and balances -- was to make the decisions of America's leaders cleverer, wiser and better...

Der Spiegel ran an opinion piece a week or two ago arguing that Europe needed less democracy and more centralized power with rule by elites, so this view on US comes as no great surprise.

The less democracy, more centralized power article can be read at http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,773071,00.html

The TEA party is scaring the crap out of the international socialists, and we’ve just really started.

Not only is the German statist apparently averse to personal hygiene, he's also a plagiarist.

Not so for his protégé Gregor Peter Schmitz. A reader referred me to this post on BLOGBAR where blogger DonAlphonso discovered that a recent piece of "reporting" by Schmitz was in fact a verbatim translation of a Washington Post story. Here is just one of the passages that DonAlphonso highlights:....

Does Der Speigel plagiarize?

The Tea Parties are composed of middle class, middle-of-the-road Middle Americans. There’s nothing Right Wing about them.

All they ask is for the crooked, self aggrandizing politicians to KNOCK IT OFF and work for us instead of for the Communists!

The Germans had a unique method with dealing with the unemployment rate, they were called ovens. I guess this guy longs for the good old days.

Say, Herr Scheisse, what is The Fatherland's unemployment rate these days?

Better than ours.

US unemployment rate

Another Harvard grad.....

There seems to be a LOT of “experts” who have graduated from Harvard.

Those “experts” have been in charge of our govt. for several years, and look at all the good they’ve done. /s

Every time I see the word “democracy” I reach for my Constitution. I’ve seen the “d” word in at least two thread titles this morning.

The author is full of Schmitz.

He shows no real understanding of the things about which he pontificates. Rather, he seems to be one of those all-too-common, ignore-the-inconvenient-truths, let’s-all-just-jump-on-the-bandwagon sorts, a typical light-weight thinker of the unproductive chattering classes.

The guy uncritically accepts Obama’s statements as if they were true. He seems to believe that David Brooks is a Conservative (guffaw!).

Tell me again, why should anybody with even half a brain (tied behind his back or not) take him seriously?

This is just the beginning folks. The DNC/Media Complex is in full campaign mode. For the next 18 months we will be inundated with stories upon stories of the evil Tea Party movement.

They tried a total media blackout in 2009 & 2010 and we made huge gains.

Hang tough, rumors of the Tea party’s early demise will be greatly exaggerated.

Actually, the TEA party signifies that the Constitution is working fine...it gives the power to the PEOPLE, and that is exactly what the TEA party movement is all about (or at least it started that way).

Der Spiegel is rattling on about a principle that Germany does not have and doesn't even understand - I know, I was married to one for 10 years. They are steeped in socialism and the concept of freedom is limited in their understanding of life on this planet.

Our system is made up of checks and balances to insure that we do not have another "king", or dictator...the last wall to that end is the people, and the TEA party movement IS the people.

>Most Americans, after all, are also familiar with the Founding Fathers that the Tea Party movement is so fond of citing. And what did Jefferson, Washington, Madison and the others say when their young republic was forced to borrow money? The state, they said, had to pay its debts. On that point, they knew no compromise.<

So if the US cuts spending down to a rate below its income, “the state, they said, had to pay its debts”. Would the state not then pay its debts?

What a pea wit.

Being from Harvard means never having to say you're sorry.

Instead, you just say: "It's the new normal."

Yeah, well. What is Germany's total population? Something like 10,000? It doesn't take much for it to drop that much. In 2006, Germany's unemployment rate was something like 12%.

Regardless, the world doesn't need two Germanys.
