Debt ceiling increase of up to $2.8 trillion
Spending cuts of roughly $1 trillion
Vote on the Balanced Budget Amendment
Special committee to recommend cuts of $1.8 trillion (or whatever it takes to add up to the total of the debt ceiling increase)
Committee must make recommendations before Thanksgiving recess
If Congress does not approve those cuts by late December, automatic across-the-board cuts go into effect, including cuts to Defense and Medicare.
A senior White House aide pushed back against the idea that this was a done deal.
“Talks continue, but there is no deal to report,” the aide said.
No tax increases.
2.8 TRILLION FOR A LITTLE OVER 1.5 YEARS, WHY DO WE HAVE A REPUBLICAN HOUSE AGAIN?????
SOMEONE PLEASE REMIND ME!!
If Congress doesn’t approve the cuts they cut the military and Medicare.
How about cutting the foreign aid first, or cut the education Department or the Energy department or the EPA, or ground Air Force One.
But no, they want to screw over the Military and Medicare which is already screwed over by the new Health reform Bill.
By the way why didnt they just cut the whole friggin Health Care Bill that we don’t want and don’t need.?
Even if BBA goes down in flames = there was an actual VOTE and it’s an issue for the next election.
I like this framework. It does a fairly good job of holding the politicians accountable. It is not perfect, but a good way to get over the hump.
This country desperately needs a national election ASAP!
“Special committee to recommend cuts of $1.8 trillion”
Proposed committee members: Harry Reid, Harry Reid, Harry Reid, Harry Reid, Harry Reid, and Harry Reid.
If you have cuts of $1 trillion plus, why raise the debt ceiling?
If they can do this:
“If Congress does not approve those cuts by late December, automatic across-the-board cuts go into effect, including cuts to Defense and Medicare.”
Just do it and end the “crisis” now!
Why do we even bother voting for them if this is the "best" they can do? My God, they had Obama over a barrel and once again they somehow managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory (assuming your post is accurate.)
Now more than ever, I think my tagline's exactly right.
I actually like it - BBA vote, across-the-board automatic cuts if no other cuts are found, and no tax increases.
I think this is a pretty solid win for the GOP. They’re telling the President he can get a dollar-for-dollar exchange of debt limit increase for spending cuts, no tax increases, the opportunity to try to find his own cuts (but automatic across-the-board if not done), and a vote on the BBA.
It’s pretty solid, overall. The automatic cut is the best part - there’s no way to avoid that without another law being passed to repeal - and that won’t happen with the current makeup of Congress.
I can live with that deal. Remember, we only have one house of Congress. While that’s not nirvana, it does move the ball in the right direction, and is a substantial cave in by the Democrats about what policy is right. Cuts, not tax increases. Balanced Budget vote. Automatic cuts.
I’m thinking this is as good as we could get. A shutdown would not be a fight we could win, in my opinion.
I’ll not take second fiddle to anyone on conservative principles, but this looks like as good as conservatism can get today. Fight on for more tomorrow.
I can live with it. Take the deal.
Debt ceiling increase=$2.8 trillion
Spending cuts=$1.8 trillion (only if “approved” any bets on
this happening?)
And this is a GOOD deal????
America, get ready to be made even poorer by the morons
in charge. I hope we get revenge next year!
There are plans out on the table that would cut the size of government 2.5 trillion immediately with no tax increases, not half now half later for the total over ten years poppycock.
These people in Congress can't even see the trees for the forest.
I've been to D.C. on many occasions....this place just screams WASTE!
10% cut for all departments with some departments being eliminated all together. Cut endowment for this, subsidy for that.
Constitutionally, many of these programs should never have been put into place to begin with.
