ABC News has learned that Republicans and the White House have struck a tenative deal to raise the debt ceiling before the Aug. 2 deadline.
It's not done yet, but here is the framework of the tentative deal they have worked out, according to a source familiar with the negotiations:

“This is a win for our side if we get cuts and no tax increases”
Wasn’t reids plan originally to have spending cuts coming from the supposed draw down in the ME? Is this going to be a double hit for the military when spending isn’t down by Nov? Then the Republicans would take the hit for putting national security at risk for not passing a special funding/spending appropriation for national security. We’ve been had again if this is to be the case.
Wouldn’t that be a kick in the teeth if the tea party and dems shoot this down in the house. Then obama would definitely be at fault for the dee fault. But that won’t happen. The house dems will vote for whatever obama wants.
*without* tax increases
Who even knows if this is true...all kind of bs keeps coming out and it turns out to be bs...especially from ABC...besides, the house will not pass it...
If you have cuts of $1 trillion plus, why raise the debt ceiling?
If they can do this:
“If Congress does not approve those cuts by late December, automatic across-the-board cuts go into effect, including cuts to Defense and Medicare.”
Just do it and end the “crisis” now!
LOL. We've been adequately conditioned.
I get the feeling that this is ABC BS
And any hints/talk about Obama invoking the 14th Ammendment was obviously just a bluff...
Who cares what the GOP wanted? In actuality, Congress is appropriating money that doesn't exist, borrowing it so that they can turn around and gift that money to others. In any other context, this would be considered embezzlement. Stealing the money of others for personal gain (IE: votes.) If the GOP wanted this, then they too are guilty of such a crime.
NO INCREASES IN TAXES and Dollar per Dollar cut.
Let's follow the money.. Most of the 'cuts' would be the not spending the money on wars that don't exist in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some of the 'cuts' would be not expanding automatically the budgets of agencies as much as might have happened. And all these 'cuts' take place in a hypothetical future rather than right now.
In exchange, congress promises to continue to appropriate trillions more than the federal government takes in, roughly 12% of the GDP over the expected time period of the loan ceiling.
Pretty sure that in any book this would be considered an utter loss. Oh, and whee, a vote on a constitutional provision to force congress to spend the people's money responsibly. It is literally a permission slip for a future liberal congress (can there be a more liberal one than this one?) to raise taxes to 'balance' the budget.
We can not continue with the federal government spending 25% of the GDP. The economy can not expand enough to cover up this gross overspending. The party needs to end, and reason needs to reign supreme, and all those people embezzling the public's dollar need to stop.
Oh, and the no new taxes just means an absolute end to the Bush era tax cuts and a return of the marriage penalty in taxes. @whee, what a thing to celebrate. If this deal goes through, it is an utter loss for the nation.
That’s why I want the details for that provision. My opinion of this compromise is withheld until we know what possible legislative tricks were placed within. On the surface it’s tolerable but trust isn’t something I extend any longer.
The bottom line here is that the current GOP leadership showed that they are unwilling to really fight when it counts and unwilling to go to the limit on a major issue.
They’ll say “we only have the House, we only have 1/2 of 1/3 of the Govt”
I say, you had the WH, the House and the Senate from 2003-2006 and what did you?
Even if they had the Senate the Dems would still have 40 Senators. Same with if they had the WH.
Unless they had the WH, the House and 60+ in the Senate the dems will have the same leverage they have now. In fact, the GOP would likely need closer to 65 in the Senate because of the Brown/Snowe/Collins/Murkowski/McCain/Graham/etc... group who we can’t really rely on to be conservative.
So there’s always going to be some excuse. If they didn’t go all the way here, they won’t in the future.
I think we had the WH and the dems on the ropes. They didn’t want a default, they would have done anything to avoid it. If we had held out to say Monday afternoon and said “you pass CCB, that’s the deal” we’d have gotten that. If we had said “you pass the BBA, that’s the deal” we’d have gotten that.
This could have been a huge win and a defning moment and instead it looks like it won’t be.
The house voted to repeal it but it ain’t repealed. I’m just saying this would have been a good place to defund it. But, I’m just dreaming.
Uhmmm...the $2.8 TRILLION will have to be repaid by the taxpayers, with interest. Mostly taxpayers who haven't been born, or even conceived yet. Do you get it? This is a $2.8 TRILLION dollar tax increase ON THEM.
The crowning stated purpose of the Constitution of the United States is "to secure the Blessings of Liberty to Posterity."
Every single one of these congresscreatures swore before God to do that.
Every one of them is in violation of that oath.
The Democrats and the Republicans are robbing our posterity of their God-given, unalienable right to government by consent.
Every one of them needs to be fired by We the People.
We will never see a decrease in the size and power of the federal gov't as long as our side continues to go long with the Democrats in labeling spending increases as spending cuts,
Early Sunday vote has been “postponed” by Reid...
These overviews surely do seem to avoid saying what the cuts are for the first year, which are really the only ones that have a chance to happen.
others have already pointed out, their are ways taxes can be added. (Grover Norquist himself, said repealing the Bush tax cuts, is NOT a tax increase, freeing those who made the no-tax pledge.
dollar for dollar cuts?
it raises the cap by 2.8 TRILLION.
and the National Debt
INCREASES over the next 10 years by 9 TRILLION !!!!!!!!!
this bankrupts the country.
please, look at these two charts, comparing Russia, with their recovery FROM socialism with their flat tax,
and our entry TO socialism, with our Marxist President:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2755900/posts?page=4#4
look at the USA chart, which is bad enough.
...then add another 9 TRILLION in debt.
current revenues BALANCE with the 2006 budget.
would it be so hard to simply return to that,
instead of the nightmare of Obama’s spending ?
if the GOP did NOTHING, the OBAMA would have to CUT
spending, to HIS followers. THEY would put pressure on him.
WH spokesman Carney, ADMITTED this.
it would CRUMBLE Obama’s support, and guarantee his defeat.
Instead, we hand Obama everything he needs, and put the USA another 9 TRILLION in debt.
...so we can say “we won, there are no new taxes”...
for now.
CUTS???? WHAT CUTS??? A non increase is most certainly NOT a cut!
I'm thinking a lot of you folks are delusional. There's nothing for us in this. $2.8 trillion? Figure it's actually 1.5 knowing their pencil whipping. And by the time CBO does their estimate, probably down to under a trillion. NOBODY here remembers the last deal? The $82 billion one that turned out to be $30 billion that had already been flagged for cutting? Well this is the same kind of deal.
If this ensures that there won't be another debt ceiling debate before the election, then Obama won. Period.
You guys are actually cheering because the military is going to get cut? You're nuts.
There's nothing good in this. It's all a pack of lies. They overspend by almost 2.5 trillion every YEAR that's $25 trillion over ten years and you guys are cheering 2.5 trillion that's probably not there and is guaranteed to disappear after the election.
Flame away.
It should have been no more than 1 Trillion increase with a 1 Trillion drop in spending this year and that should increase by 10% min a year.
The endless spending from DC needs to stop, we do not have a deficit crisis it is a SPENDING CRISIS.
Time to bring back the guillotine and resolve the issue with DC.
