George W Bush says his blank reaction to the first news of the Sept 11 attacks while US president was a conscious decision to project an aura of calm in a crisis.
In a rare interview with the National Geographic Channel, Mr Bush reflected on what was going through his mind when he was informed that a second passenger jet had hit New York's World Trade Center.
Mr Bush was visiting a Florida classroom at the time, and the incident - which was caught by television cameras - has often been used by critics to ridicule his apparently dazed response to the attack
"My first reaction was anger. Who the hell would do that to America? Then I immediately focused on the children, and the contrast between the attack and the innocence of children," Mr Bush said.
Mr Bush said he could see journalists at the back of the classroom getting the news on their own cellphones "and it was like watching a silent movie."
Mr Bush said he quickly realised that a lot of people beyond the room would be watching for his reaction.
"So I made the decision not to jump up immediately and leave the classroom. I didn't want to rattle the kids. I wanted to project a sense of calm," he said of his decision to remain seated and silent.
"I had been in enough crises to know that the first thing a leader has to do is to project calm," he added.

Most of us at FR & Lucianne.com recognized that he did not want to panic the children - and respected him for his leadership in that time.
I am no admirer of the administration of George W. Bush, but his conduct at the time of the Moslem attack on the U.S. was his finest hour. That the best criticism his enemies can come up with is his facial expression at the time is proof that he handled it well.
I thought President George Bush showed extreme leadership.

Another note: I much rather read the news from the UK's "The Telegraph.co.uk " [free app] every day, then any other news source in the US. It's ahead of what is written here-uncovers scandals, terror plots, terrorist backgrounds [Ft Hood etc.] and does not sanitize.

I saw Buch’s face that day and knew exactly what was going through his mind. Situational awareness. Fighter pilot training then leadership training kicking in.
Bush had exceptional people working with him that day and for many days afterwards. He knew that. Rummy did not need his hand held nor did Dick Cheney.
It was his finest hour and days.
Bush made me feel strong throughout his administration.
Bush’s immediate response is what I would expect from any President. Of course the innate drama-queen nature of the liberal set wanted panic all around... because that’s how they roll.

My (slightly sarcastic) response was: If President Bush had acted immediately, we would have been able to begin the preinvasion bombing of Afghanistan at 12:23pm EDT October 7, 2001 instead of having to wait until 12:30.
Now years later seven minutes of waiting seems even less important.

GW wanted to be a president for all the people, what was good for the country-so when Ted Kennedy had pushed for housing ownership "for all" carried over from Clinton's administration of entitlements, he went along in concept; but he didn't intend for risky loans to be taking place. Frank is out there spinning his lies on Fannie Mae. Dodd is playing in the Countryside. Bush did make noise on more regulations needed when it came to financial houses, Fannie Mae, on social security facing financial issues, etc as Moody's employees were being fired who predicted problems which lead to the mortgage crisis. How can we trust Moody's now?
