Editorial: Boehner's Plan Is Better Than Nothing

Politics: President Obama may not have a plan for resolving the debt crisis, but he definitely has a goal — to shift blame for the lousy economy onto Republicans' shoulders. Above all else, the GOP must not let that happen.

When House Speaker John Boehner released his latest plan to cut spending in exchange for raising the debt ceiling, attacks from Obama and his fellow Democrats were to be expected.

The attacks from the GOP side, however, are short-sighted at best. They risk giving Obama what he wants more than anything — a way to weasel out of responsibility for the economic mess his policies have produced.

It's true Boehner's plan falls short of what's needed to get spending and debt under control. The Congressional Budget Office says it would trim $22 billion next year and $917 billion over the next decade. That's in exchange for raising the debt ceiling by $900 billion, but that's still a pittance compared with the added debt expected.

The fact that Boehner's plan relies on a special committee to develop an as-yet-unspecified bigger debt reduction package next year, when the debt ceiling would have to be raised again, is also a bit disconcerting.

Republicans are correct to also point out that Obama has completely manufactured this crisis. He's imposed an artificial Aug. 2 deadline — a date that's been pushed back several times already this year and that some experts now say could be pushed back another week, or possibly a month.

The lesser of two evils is still evil.

I agree - we can get this through now, while we still have the advantage (which we are losing by the minute).

If this fails, Bambi will be able to do whatever he wants. And while optimistic Freepers keep saying, “Yeah, that’ll show them, they’ll never vote for him again after his (as yet undisclosed) plan destroys the economy,” the reality is that they will vote for him again.

Wrong -— time to stop playing partisan politics & time to save our country before it is too late!

I would ordinarily oppose this and want a better deal. But the bottom line is Obummer will veto whatever comes out of the House if it isn’t killed by Senate Democrats. So, let’s send this over and make it crystal clear by a White House veto that Obummer and his Democrats are tax and spenders and responsible for any consequences of not raising the debt limit.

There won’t be “nothing.” There will be Obama taking over the entire economy, lock, stock and barrel. He doesn’t care if he destroys us.

Boehner’s plan is flawed, but it is still a start and it could pass, probably even to the point where Bambi’s veto could be overriden. But I think it’s already too late and the GOP has thrown away its advantage because of infighting, as usual.

I would say that Boehner is pretty much the same as nothing fiscally. But the real problem is that in order to get Boehner the GOP members will need to vote for nothing. Let the Democrats vote for nothing, get nothing, and run against them in 2012.

Didn't Reid just say this is a non-starter?

Boehner's plan is better than ____________?

Okay my fellow Freepers, I just had to ask the question.

What exactly is Boehner's plan better than?

Boehner's "plan" is worse than nothing. His plan serves to accelerate deficit spending, rather than stop it.

There won’t be “nothing,” simply because the country requires something to keep functioning. In any case, the Dems won’t get blamed for the resulting chaos brought by whatever plan they suddenly come up with or whatever is imposed by Bambi.

They are never blamed for their evil. We have a chance to make a tiny improvement and get credit for it, and we should get it while we can.
