COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Deputies say a man is dead after the motel clerk he tried to sexually assault and rob early Monday morning fought back and killed him.

Investigators say 43-year-old Vincent Carson of Orangeburg entered a Days Inn motel at 133 sometime before 6:00 a.m.

As the female clerk went into the breakfast room to prepare breakfast, she found Carson waiting inside. The victim said Carson held a knife to her throat and said, "This is a robbery."

Investigators said when her attacker slipped the knife into his pants pocket to begin tying her up with plastic ties, the woman pulled a handgun from under her shirt, turned, and fired into the man's chest at point blank range.

Deputies say the victim was about 100 pounds lighter than Carson and stood at least a foot shorter than him.

When deputies got to the scene, they found the suspect unresponsive on the floor. Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Carson died from a single gunshot to the chest.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said Carson's intent was not only to rob the motel, but also to rape the clerk.

One of my coworkers (a delivery driver) was shot at by a psycho armed with a .22 revolver a couple of weeks ago (the guy was off his meds) and Carl said that the barrel looked like it belonged on a tank when it was pointed in his direction.

Fortunately the guy "just" shot into the ground at Carl's feet. He's now facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

This is the second time that Carl's been shot at in the five years he's worked at my store. And people wonder why I don't want to get my CDL so I can be a back-up driver... If they won't let me carry (I've asked and they've said no) then they can just forget it.

I carried a .22lr for years and practiced on average once a week. Practice is the key to shot placement, regardless of caliber. A .22lr from a three inch barrel of a semi-auto should always have one or more follow up rounds, regardless of first shot hit. That is one of the beauties of the .22lr, the recoil is so negligible that second and third rounds usually go where they need to. I guess I’m disagreeing with you; even more practice is needed if such a small caliber is carried.

Maybe his zipper was down and his pecker was out...Oh well, the way decent citizens are fighting back, the resultant shortage of Obama voters might actually be sufficient to swing an election in key battleground states!!!;)

If she hadn't killed him, think of the bill...

Figure a trial for a shooting in California costing at least $25,000 a day taking about two weeks. With a life sentence at $35,000 a year prison cost, plus surgery, rehab, and possible physical therapy.

Two to three mil, easy. One .22 bullet, 40 grains (max) or 12 to the ounce = $60 million / ounce of proven value, never mind the worth of the potential victim.

Now that's financial leverage. Beats gold cold!

“Where’s that venerable advice to just cooperate with the criminal in order to avoid injury?”

I think they call that “committing suicide”, now.

Yeah, the Hollywood version of stuff shows people shooting bad guys and walking away without so much as a hiccup.
Reality is that you might barf, at the least, wig out in guilt and reciminations over it because of what you had to do.
Or you go numb and shut the world out.
Or you get extremely angry about it.
The human creature is odd in that several seeming polar opposite reactions are normal for stress like this.

I’m retired military, but was never in combat. However, the training you receive kicks in pretty quick when someone is shooting at you. My son’s career military and has been shot at, fired back and killed.

He remembers his unit’s first engagement in Afghanistan. They were ambushed. He said there is a moment of hesitation when you’re thinking this can’t be happening to us. Then the training kicks in and you fight back. Second engagement there is no hesitation and everyone starts shooting. In this engagement you’re a lot more focused and are actually thinking and maneuvering. In the first and second engagements you’re too busy trying to stay alive to give much thought to the people you’re killing. Third engagement you’re on autopilot doing your job. But you’re thinking if they would just leave us alone we’d go home because there would be no one to fight. By the fourth engagement you’re angry. This anger manifests itself in aggressiveness and frankly not caring about the people you’re killing. You’re job is to ultimately go home to your family

As for me, I think I would react similarly if anyone were to attack me. People have three choices when confronted—flight, fight or surrender. It is not my nature to flee or surrender. Conceding that I have not been tested, I don’t think killing someone trying to do me harm would bother me all that much.

For the average person today, most likely having no military training, the big moment is making the decision to defend yourself—with your hands/feet or a gun. That is the moment one chooses not be a victim. I think it natural to be a little remorseful that the perp forced you to kill him/her. But being elated at just having survived the encounter will pretty much negate any feelings of guilt over the longer term. I think normal people, in thinking about their experience from time to time, would wish they were never forced to kill anyone. But I doubt they would dwell on it much.

Life moves on.

Again, admitting I’ve not having been tested, I believe it would be as easy for me to kill a feral human being attacking me as it would a feral animal attacking me.
