The sheriff seemed like a reasonable peace officer.

One shot, one kill. Now that’s gun control.

When deputies got to the scene, they found the suspect unresponsive on the floor. Sounds like a straightforward case of lead poisoning. Tsk, tsk. He shouldn't be eating toys from China, or licking the paint off the walls. Probably suicide, poor fellow. Well nothing to see here, move along...

...to begin tying her up with plastic ties... ...Carson's intent was not only to rob the motel, but also to rape the clerk.
Where's that venerable advice to just cooperate with the criminal in order to avoid injury?
To: M. Thatcher
Indeed. The miscreant must have had some powerful Viagra. He’s dead and thats a good thing. The 2nd. Amendment, the best rape prevention in the world.

Sheriff Lott says this was an unfortunate situation in which the victim feared for her life and defended herself. "Unfortunate" is not the word I would have used. More like "joyous", "festive", or "gleeful".
