Why the Democratic Party is Doomed
Forbes.com ^ | 07/18/11 | Richard Miniter

Posted on 07/27/2011 12:58:16 PM PDT by Pining_4_TX

The Democratic Party, as we have known it for the past 70 years, is now in its last days.

Yes, the House Republicans may raise the debt ceiling for a mix of spending cuts and revenue raisers. Yes, Barack Obama may win the 2012 presidential contest. Yes, bureaucrats and judges will continue to impose new and costly regulations on the economy.

But it doesn’t matter. The long-term trends are almost all bad news for the left wing of the party.

This week’s fight over raising the federal debt limit exposes a key weakness in the warfare-welfare state that has bestowed power onto the Democratic Party: Without an ever-growing share of the economy, it dies. Every vital element of the Democrats’ coalition — unions, government workers, government contractors, “entitlement” consumers — requires constant increases in payments, grants and consulting contracts. Without those payments, they don’t sign checks to re-elect Democrats.

Like it or not, Obama is not the new FDR, but the new Gorbachev: a man forced to preside over the demise of a political system he desperately wants to save.

Democrat champions in the punditocracy confidently predict that the future of the world’s oldest political party is bright. But in fact, the coalition that is the modern Democratic Party is doomed. Every pillar upholding its heavy roof is crumbling.

brilliant observation. I fear that political divisions will be broken up more and more by race in the future as whites become less and less of the majority.

...while the Pubbies are no longer conservative but a party of the moronic, mushy middle.

I guess you were not around during the Bob Michel House GOP Leader days. That was what you described. The GOP is getting re-energized with Conservative blood thanks to the Tea Party. These RINO losers are being Primaried and losing. I think the activism going on right now is very impressive. Tax increases are off the table for this debt ceiling deal. Who would have thought.

Nobody seems to correlate the rising debt ceiling with declining jobs.

The rising debt ceiling has two consequences....

more regulation ...

to occupy employees in expanding federal bureaucracies...which expand because “they have more money” and another layer of bureaucrats need their 20 year promotions... Each round of regulatory expansion is the effective equivalent of another targeted tax increase on the object of the regulation.

more taxes...

The rising debt ceiling has demands and expectations of creditors for new elements of “revenue raising” by the Feds...taxes or fees.

In this strangling environment job creation is simply NOT possible.

In fact the only logical conclusion..can be ..is that the Federal apparatus -initially an asset to the United States..by virtue of its abilities to raise an effective Navy in the late 1700’s, and early 1800’s to facilitate overseas trade on behalf of the States, has become nothing other than the States greatest liability at this point in time. In the absence of profound regulatory and taxation reform-which is not capable of coming from the same minds that created the problem..we may well be at the end of the line.

Richard Miniter fails to take into account Nathan Bedford's first maxim of American politics: all politics in America is not local but ultimately racial. In that context, all of the old assumptions and culture of the American system come under pressure.

What Obama is trying to do in "transforming America" is to crash our current constitutional system and our capitalist system. The author thinks that this transformation will play out in the context of an America of 250 years of constitutional governance but he should think of the transformation occurring in the context of a banana republic for that is what Obama is trying to contrive. In the context of a banana republic it is easy to imagine the emergence of Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales, or Juan Peron, not to mention a fellow named Fidel Castro.

No, the Democrat party is not doomed, it has already transformed itself into a vehicle which would not just welcome but facilitate the kind of transformation which is easily imaginable in a banana republic and it will do so by precipitating financial chaos and race politics.

That’s right, around 2003-2004-2005 we heard all sorts of arrogant claims that the Democrat Party was almost dead, would never win another National Election, had become obsolete, etc,,,.

And then came 2006, 2008.

Never grow overconfident or complacent. It is THE fastest way to lose.

Wow, such a cheerful, uplifting title and then you have to read this....

Yes, the House Republicans may raise the debt ceiling for a mix of spending cuts and revenue raisers. Yes, Barack Obama may win the 2012 presidential contest. Yes, bureaucrats and judges will continue to impose new and costly regulations on the economy.

Ughhh!

But in fact, the coalition that is the modern Democratic Party is doomed. Every pillar upholding its heavy roof is crumbling.

He couldn't be more wrong. If he was right, the "pillars" upholding Detroit's miserable and corrupt political structure would have collapsed decades ago, and Detroit would have come under the control of conservatives.

Consider this: If the Bush-Kennedy amnesty had gone through and the illegals were getting voting rights before Obama's second term, then Obama would not be in political trouble, no matter how anti-capitalist his policies or how objectively harmful his policies were to the prosperity of the nation.

Everyone should remember what that White House favorite Van Jones said - “there's plenty of money out there” - meaning all the wealth of the USA.

http://dailycaller.com/2010/07/24/van-jones-stop-worrying-about-the-deficit-the-government-can-just-take-more-money-from-rich-companies/

Obviously Obama agrees with this since he now expects us, under the Obama created Threat of Default Crisis, to pay for his insane spending spree. And of course he doesn't want a balanced budget amendment because there is still privately held money out there for him to steal.

Exactly! I’ve long suspected that Obama has no plans to ever leave the WH.

“The Democratic Party, as we have known it for the past 70 years, is now in its last days”

Nonsense.

The ‘rat party IS NOT “doomed”.
If anything, it’s “the growth party” in America right now.

As more and more illegals pour in, looking for “rights” and “benefits”, to which party will they turn?

As fully 47% of Americans no longer pay taxes, but instead have become “benefit consumers”, to which party will they turn to ensure the goodies keep on a-comin’?

As our schools are dumbed down to the point where cheating to pass becomes the norm (see Atlanta, Georgia), with a mass media that grows ever more crass and base and actively promotes one side over another, which party will come to be seen by increasing numbers of the unwashed as better representing their “interests”?

As “diversity” destroys our cultural coherence as well as our ethnic heritage, to which party will the “diverse” turn to in the hope of promoting their cultures, vis-a-vis the “traditional” “Euro-American” culture?

“Doomed?”
Please.

The only major political party facing extinction is _the other one_, which — if they don’t find some intestinal fortitude, and find it quickly — is destined to go the way of the Whigs into oblivion.

Just sayin’...

You may consider the deeper implications the author is suggesting. Each of the points you listed are unsustainable - what happens when the free sh!t army doesn't get their cheese?

For those who don't understanding what is occurring, I'll spell it out for you: the USA you knew and expected to continue for the foreseeable future is done. What comes next is anyone's guess, but the divide will be along racial/economic lines.

All the dirty laundry that has been accumulating for the last 50 years is going to be washed. Without the strong arm of the fed.gov forcing chosen outcomes, it's gonna be like the "good ole' days", except we won't have (a) an open frontier in which to bleed off population pressure; and (b) a significant % of the world's critical resources in which to drive production.

I think you are exactly right.

Still I have hope because after the implosion, after air castles collapse, the people who made and to this day make America will still be in place: soldiers, builders, farmers, ranchers, miners, machinists, fishermen, loggers, small town doctors, bankers, clergy, merchants...they will still be at their homes and shops and offices ready to sweep up, pick up, build up the nation again.

It’s what they do and have been doing since the first Revolution. The hell with Washington, the hell with Wall Street, Hollywood, Georgetown, Alexandria, Manhattan, L.A., on and on.

“After the buffalo are gone,” Sitting Bull said, “we will hunt mice. Because we are hunters and we want our freedom.”

Plug in the trades and the callings mentioned above—as well as any other honest day’s work you want to name—and Sitting Bull’s dictum holds true for all of us who care.

Bring on the crash. Bring on the smoke and ruins, the bleating and the bleeding, for that matter, if that’s where they want to go.

When it’s over we’ll all still be here, ready to work.
