McDonald’s Trims Its Happy Meal ("Would you like apples with that?")
ny times ^ | 7/26/2011 | Stephanie Strom

Bowing to pressure from health advocates and parents, McDonald’s is putting the Happy Meal on a diet.

The company announced Tuesday that it would more than halve the amount of French fries and add fruit to its popular children’s meal in an effort to reduce the overall calorie count by 20 percent.

But McDonald’s appeasement only went so far. A toy will still come with each Happy Meal despite criticism that the trinkets, often with tie-ins to movies like “Toy Story,” foster a powerful connection between children and the often calorie-laden meals.

While Happy Meals account for less than 10 percent of all McDonald’s sales, the signature box and its contents — first introduced in 1979 — have become a favorite target in recent years. Lawmakers and consumers have rallied around breaking that childhood link between toys and fast food, with the efforts increasing as Michelle Obama and national public health officials point to the estimated 17 percent rate of obesity among the nation’s youths.

They can pry my “two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce and cheese on a sesame seed bun” from my cold, dead fingers.

If they cut me to a half order of fries at the same price, I’ll go with the dollar menu. Folks already have a choice of apple dippers; if that was what I wanted, that would be what I ordered.

They caved! Ha!! And parents will go to the alternative burger joint next door for kids meals. This will end up hurting McDonalds. We hardly get McD’s, but for sure now we will just go to Sonic on our fast food days. Lol!!

A news report said that people don’t buy the apples when they go to McDonalds because they don’t want them. Great business model: Force people to get products they don’t want.

Sure, cut10% of your revenue PLUS the meals eaten by the adult who brings the child.

Outright refuse and sue the FLOTUS and entire Federal government for harassment. Tell the busy bodies to STFU.

Just cutting half the fries in kids meals, but didn’t say they were lowering the price. Geez! The kids fries portion was already small. What, will there 5 fries in a bag? No thanks! If we want fast food for our kids will go to Sonic!

You may be right, but McDonalds is just killing the competition right now.
Been a great stock

I guess she can’t get a job or a life. Now she wants to make life miserable for the rest of us.

Probably looking to join Obama's army of regulators, and take care of all three at once.

And now it will be manditory.

I get it.

I foresee little bags of apple slices thrown in garbage cans. Nasty!

That’s like banning beer while keeping barley malt, water, hops and yeast on the shelves.

Silly....my quite healthy, athletic, slim children got McD’s on occasion as they grew (and still do).

I, on the other hand, am developing bulimia. I want to puke every time I hear another of these Nanny State stories!

Michael F. Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which is representing a woman in California who is suing McDonald’s for including toys in its Happy Meals.

Around here (central Pennsylvania), if you substitute apples for fries or milk for soda, you pay extra. It’s that way for all of the nanny state rules - they all end up costing the consumer more. Pretty soon there will be a $1.50/Big Mac tax like they did to cigarettes.

Hell yes they got a waiver.

How could you run a min wage business if you had to give the peeps a $10 grand/yr health coverage?
