Transcript: Boehner's Speech on Debt Talks
FOXNEWS ^ | July 25, 2011 | FoxNews.com

Here was the president, asking for the largest debt increase in American history, on the heels of the largest spending binge in American history.

Here's what we got for that spending binge: a massive health care bill that most Americans never asked for. A 'stimulus' bill that was more effective in producing material for late-night comedians than it was in producing jobs. And a national debt that has gotten so out of hand it has sparked a crisis without precedent in my lifetime or yours.

Last week, the House passed such a plan, and with bipartisan support. It's called the 'Cut, Cap, and Balance' Act. It CUTS and CAPS government spending and paves the way for a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution, which we believe is the best way to stop Washington from spending money it doesn't have. Before we even passed the bill in the House, the President said he would veto it.

I want you to know I made a sincere effort to work with the president to identify a path forward that would implement the principles of Cut, Cap, & Balance in a manner that could secure bipartisan support and be signed into law. I gave it my all.

Unfortunately, the president would not take yes for an answer. Even when we thought we might be close on an agreement, the president's demands changed.

The president has often said we need a 'balanced' approach -- which in Washington means: we spend more. . .you pay more. Having run a small business, I know those tax increases will destroy jobs.

The sad truth is that the president wanted a blank check six months ago, and he wants a blank check today. That is just not going to happen.

Spending will be cut by more than one trillion dollars, and a serious, bipartisan committee of the Congress will begin the hard but necessary work of dealing with the tough challenges our nation faces.

This is the deal killer. Does he really think that he can get any more out of the Rats in this BRAC-style "super committee" than he is getting now?

Ok, take back some of what I said about Boehner.

I really like that speech.

Let's just say that he is doing the right thing THIS TIME... and we should support him 100% as long as he continues to do the right thing. A GREAT SPEAKER would have already degraded the obama brand and won this argument.

That's it. I'm going to my boss today to demand a raise. I need to raise the limit on my credit card. Due to profligate spending (was all my ex-wife's fault), I find myself in hideous debt. I took a great European vacation, and plan on a Caribbean Cruise later this year (they are pretty expensive you know), my neighbor slashed all 4 tires of my car, and now I need more money. If I can't the raise, the whole company will collapse (he'll understand that). Besides, I am the most important employee here.

Who's REALLY the boss? The electorate or the President?

Where are all the snarky folks who have been beating up on Boehner around here and making 6th grade jokes about his name? His remarks were direct and effective in stark contrast to BHO. This is the first time the “response” was more effective than the “speech”. Boehner has won this round. The really big fight comes next - 2012 budget due on October 1. Boehner and the House are on a roll. It is time to stop the nit-picking and sniping.

You know, you are really just a "Johnny One Note".

I hope your voice isn't a high-pitched whine like your posts.

I hope you are not using a government computer and are not running your mouth on my dime. I think it is time for an audit of all congress staff computers and their usage. The news media needs to look into that. Now run down the hall and get me a list of all the cuts.

Boehner apparently got tired of being called Boner and figured he might as well grow a spine lest he be thrown out of office next time around.

Agreed - we need to support good behavior, to encourage more of it!
