If the Mitt Romney campaign has worries that the candidate's Mormon faith may be an insurmountable obstacle to the White House, they may take solace from one recent survey: According to the Public Religion Research Institute and Religion News Service, only 40% of Americans identify Romney as a Mormon.
46% claim they do not know the candidate's faith and 10% figured him to be a Protestant or Catholic. Incidentally these numbers mirror those of the man Romney is seeking to unseat, President Barack Obama. Four in ten Americans do not know the president's faith, 18% believe he is a Muslim and only a quarter correctly listed him as a Protestant.
Many Americans tell pollsters they are uncomfortable with a Mormon candidate. A recent Quinnipac poll found that while a majority of 60% of Americans are either entirely or somewhat comfortable with a Mormon president, this figure is less than those accepting of a Catholic of Jewish head of state, 83% and 80% respectively. 54% of African Americans and roughly 40% of women are uncomfortable with a Mormon president. The latter may be due to the church's history of excluding blacks from the priesthood and the past doctrine of polygamy.* The church has long disavowed polygamy and the exclusion of blacks from the priesthood was lifted in 1976.

And it does matter to me. I know too much about Mormonism to ever trust one in office.
I doubt hes really a Mormon. Hes no more a Mormon than he is a conservative.

He’s a Mormon all right, a true believing, faithful, ‘active’, tithe paying temple attending Mormon. I’ve been there and you don’t go through all the BS you have to to get a Temple Recommend and keep it (which Romney has) if you don’t really believe it.
Well; the registered Dems are spoken for...
I'll bet that MORE than half of FREEPERs do not know what questions are asked on a Temple Recommend...

More than half the voters voted for Obama, so I’m not surprised to hear that the title of this article is true, ie, less than half of Americans have a clue.
Sadly true. Or what they really believe. I wasn’t told 80% of their beliefs until after I joined and I studied it for over a year. They only gave me the basics.
Knowing the LDS as I do, I wouldn’t be surprised if they ‘lied for the Lord’ and signed they didn’t believe in polygamy to get into this country.
FWIW, the LDS still BELIEVE in Polygamy, they just believe they cannot practice it at the moment, but the time will come when it is restored.
RESTORED?
I've never been LDS; but from what I've STUDIED of their writings, I cannot find that it was EVER taken AWAY!! (The Flds folks seem to know this.)
If any MORMONs have any LATER "Words of GOD" to add to THIS; now would be a GOOD time to post them!!
To Whom It May Concern:
Press dispatches having been sent for political purposes, from Salt Lake City, which have been widely published, to the effect that the Utah Commission, in their recent report to the Secretary of the Interior, allege that plural marriages are still being solemnized and that forty or more such marriages have been contracted in Utah since last June or during the past year, also that in public discourses the leaders of the Church have taught, encouraged and urged the continuance of the practice of polygamy
I, therefore, as President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, do hereby, in the most solemn manner, declare that these charges are false. We are not teaching polygamy or plural marriage, nor permitting any person to enter into its practice, and I deny that either forty or any other number of plural marriages have during that period been solemnized in our Temples or in any other place in the Territory.
One case has been reported, in which the parties allege that the marriage was performed in the Endowment House, in Salt Lake City, in the Spring of 1889, but I have not been able to learn who performed the ceremony; whatever was done in this matter was without my knowledge. In consequence of this alleged occurrence the Endowment House was, by my instructions, taken down without delay.
Inasmuch as laws have been enacted by Congress forbidding plural marriages, which laws have been pronounced constitutional by the court of last resort, I hereby declare my intention to submit to those laws, and to use my influence with the members of the Church over which I preside to have them do likewise.
There is nothing in my teachings to the Church or in those of my associates, during the time specified, which can be reasonably construed to inculcate or encourage polygamy; and when any Elder of the Church has used language which appeared to convey any such teaching, he has been promptly reproved. And I now publicly declare that my advice to the Latter-day Saints is to refrain from contracting any marriage forbidden by the law of the land.
WILFORD WOODRUFF
President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
President Lorenzo Snow offered the following:
I move that, recognizing Wilford Woodruff as the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the only man on the earth at the present time who holds the keys of the sealing ordinances, we consider him fully authorized by virtue of his position to issue the Manifesto which has been read in our hearing, and which is dated September 24th, 1890, and that as a Church in General Conference assembled, we accept his declaration concerning plural marriages as authoritative and binding.
The vote to sustain the foregoing motion was unanimous.
Salt Lake City, Utah, October 6, 1890.
Hebrews 11:35-40
35. Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection. 36. Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison. 37. They were stoned ; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated-- 38. the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. |
~ Wilford Woodruff, 4th LDS President
Well, all those ancestors are probably mormon now.
We have been authorized to perform baptisms vicariously so that when they hear the gospel preached and desire to accept it, that essential ordinance will have been performed. They need not ask for any exemption from that essential ordinance. Indeed, the Lord Himself was not exempted from it.
Here and now then, we move to accomplish the work to which we are assigned. We are busily engaged in that kind of baptism. We gather the records of our kindred dead, indeed, the records of the entire human family; and in sacred temples in baptismal fonts designed as those were anciently, we perform these sacred ordinances.
Strange, one may say. It is passing strange. It is transcendent and supernal. The very nature of the work testifies that He is our Lord, that baptism is essential, that He taught the truth.
And so the question may be asked, You mean you are out to provide baptism for all who have ever lived?
Hell more than half of Americans...can’t tell you one of their States Senators.
And the other half are too embarrassed to name them.
Touche!
“Less Than Half Of Americans Know Romney’s A Moron”
Remarkable. I’ve known that about Slick Willard a long time.
Well think about it. Don’t you remember that Howard Stern deal where he quoted McCain to voters and they thought it was Obama? I think some of the same people are being polled. There are plenty of American voters out there, I wouldn’t be surprised if this poll disproportionately included the ignorant chunk of the voting bloc.
When you look @ this older pro-Mitt article, http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1929161/posts, note this quote from Mitt, we find this Mitt quote:
"I know there are some people hoping that I will simply declare in some way that my church is all well and good, but that I don't really believe it and I don't try to follow it. That's not going to happen. I'm proud of my faith. I love my faith. It is the faith of my fathers and mothers. I do my best to live by its teachings."
I clicked on the thread because I read it that way at first, too.
