White House officials thought, just hours ago, that they were “very close” to a deal with Republican House Speaker John Boehner. But all of the sudden, the speaker wasn’t returning the president’s phone calls.
“If Speaker Boehner had called back, Americans would have had a deal,” a White House official told reporters after the president announced Boehner had pulled out of negotiations.
These officials said there were “many zones of agreement,” and that cuts to entitlement programs, other than a small disagreement over Medicaid, were “settled.”
The White House said congressional staffers were still calling today to negotiate details, but the speaker was not talking to the president.
On Thursday afternoon, Obama talked with the speaker. The president called again in the evening. That call was not returned.
The White House said the speaker’s office emailed at 3:30 p.m. Friday and said the speaker would call at 5:30 p.m. The president’s office called immediately and asked to talk to the speaker. Boehner did not come to the phone, but did call 5:30 p.m., telling the president he could not continue to negotiate.
According to the White House officials, there were only three major outstanding issues -- the president asking for $400 billion in additional revenue over 10 years, how deep cuts in Medicaid would be, and the speaker’s request that the individual mandate in the health care reform law be eliminated if the government could not approve all elements of the deal.

The House only control the purse strings in as much as revenue bills must start there. In that light they have an opportunity to limit the damage of a compromise but whatever comes won't reflect what we or they want to see.
People should keep in context, they really do only have one half of one third of the government. Any strides or failings should be compared to 'what if?' Pelosi was still speaker and take this fight as a warm up for 2012 and motivation to retake the White House, Senate majority.
Coburn claims to be in his last term but the other two Republicans of the "Gang of Six" should be sidelined and mentally earmarked for primary challenges. Unfortunately they're set until 2014 and 2016. It was their scheme that pushed Obama to demand more on the "revenue" side and undermined Cut, Cap & Balance.
The fact that ObAma has changed from what they agreed is the same ole same ole way of getting more and more of what it is he wants, that is destructive to America in every way.

Even this agreement still leaves America in a severely serious situation. We have to cut all the unnecessary items . There is so much ridiculous stuff in the budget it is mind boggling, exercise study for shrimp and lots of stupid nonsense. Millions and millions of dollars in stupid studies.

It’s not just the dems, we have to many Romney like congress and senators that need retiring. TERM LIMITS for both houses and SCOTUS are a must to work for. These life time appointments are killing our country.
