WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) issued the following statement on the debt limit negotiations:
"Tonight, months after we had begun negotiations with President Obama, Vice President Biden, and the Administration, Speaker Boehner and I are ending discussions with the White House and beginning conversations with Senate leaders in the hopes of finding a solution to the debt limit debate in order to avoid default. Throughout the months of discussions, we have worked to identify real spending cuts, binding budget reforms, structural changes to save our entitlement programs, and significant debt reduction. Unfortunately, time and again these talks have reached an impasse for one reason: the Democrats insistence on raising taxes on small businesses and working families. We must get Washingtons fiscal house in order, but with millions of Americans out of work, the worst thing Washington can do is to raise taxes on those we need to start hiring again. Washington has a spending problem, and until that is fixed, raising taxes is simply asking the American people to send more money to be spent inefficiently.
"In recent days, Speaker Boehner and I have engaged in discussions at the White House with the goal of doing something big to address our debt crisis, just as we did in the House Republican Budget. During these discussions, it became clear that the White House has a fundamental philosophical difference about how we stop spending, begin to get our fiscal house in order and manage down our debt. Contrary to news reports, a deal was never reached with the White House and a deal was never close with the White House especially after the President insisted on more tax revenue after the Gang of Six plan was released. America will pay its bills and meet its obligations, and in coming days we will offer a path forward that meets the Presidents request for a debt limit increase, manages down the debt, and achieves serious spending cuts."
What the heck? The President warned Cantor not to call his bluff.
Cantor and Boehner are standing firm so far.
Very interesting part:
“a deal was never reached with the White House and a deal was never close with the White House especially after the President insisted on more tax revenue after the Gang of Six plan was released.”
Thank you Mr President, the adults will take it from here.
Cantor is my representative from the Richmond, Va area. Having watched him over the years, it is my opinion that he is getting a good amount of feedback from folks like us who are fed up with the D.C. shell game of debt and spending. He is a smart man who probably knows this is the best chance in years to put a chain on the federal beast. I have been calling his local office, his Washington office and sending e-mails on a regular basis, especially the last couple of weeks. In doing so, I always reference the fact that I have sent the same message to the Speaker. Hopefully, my Free Republic colleagues are doing the same.
“....and in coming days we will offer a path forward that meets the Presidents request for a debt limit increase....”
Sounds like Cantor is looking for a way to cave! Hey Eric! Why put it off and drag this out with more shadowboxing? If you’re going to do it, just fold up like a cheap umbrella and let the Country and the world see what you do when push really comes to shove.
Oh...while you’re bent over....only grab an ankle with ONE hand. With the other hand, just thumb your nose at the 61% of Americans who are AGAINST a debt limit increase! Frankly, I can’t wait to see the video of THAT when it goes viral!

Where did you get the idea that it’s less cowardly to capitulate to Dingy Harry Reid than it is to Obluffer?

It was Congress’s deal to work out to begin with. Obama had no business sticking his nose in it until he got the bill to sign.
I don’t really like little ambitious politicians. Something about him has always turned me off.
Eric Cantor is too ambitious for my taste. Say what you wish I will always put the general good will and welfare of USA first - much before the ideology of any politician or Party.
I was a Tea Partier long before the TP went organized and corporate.
