4 ways Rick Perry could shake up the GOP race

The Texas governor is flirting with a run for the Republican presidential nomination — and he'd arguably make the contest a lot more interesting

July 21, 2011

Republicans disappointed with their party's current slate of presidential candidates are stepping up the pressure on Texas Gov. Rick Perry to enter the race. And it's looking increasingly likely that Perry will declare his candidacy soon. "I'm getting more and more comfortable every day that this is what I've been called to do," Perry told the Des Moines Register recently. "This is what America needs." How would a Perry run reshape the Republican primaries? Here, four theories:

1. Perry would make the early contests closer
The Texas governor has generated buzz aplenty, says John Whitesides at Reuters, largely because he'll challenge frontrunners Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann head on. "If he gets in, he plans to run in each of the states with early nominating contests, directly challenging Bachmann in her top priority of Iowa and Romney in New Hampshire." Perry appeals to social conservatives who hate Romney, and has pro-business credentials Bachmann can only dream of, so he should be able to up the excitement factor in the early primaries.

2. Perry would overshadow Pawlenty and Huntsman
With Perry in the race, says Alex Roarty at National Journal, former governors Tim Pawlenty (of Minnesota) and Jon Huntsman (of Utah) would slide further toward oblivion. Both Pawlenty and Huntsman were "at one time considered among the most likely to win the party's nomination," but in a recent NBC/Wall Street Journal survey, they won the support of just 2 percent of Republicans. Without even declaring his candidacy, Perry earned twice as much support, trailing only Romney and Bachmann.

3. He'd unite the establishment and Tea Party
"Perry is clearly the flavor of the month among Republican insiders," say Chris Cillizza and Aaron Blake at The Washington Post. But he has broader appeal than other contenders. Perry is a critic of federal power, has a record of creating jobs in Texas, and boasts party ties that would almost certainly give him the second biggest warchest behind Romney. Add it all up and Perry's "the candidate perhaps best positioned to bridge the gap between the establishment wing and the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party."

4. Perry would give disgruntled Republicans someone to root for
"There's a hole in the Republican primary field you could drive a truck through right now," says the Texas Tribune's Evan Smith, as quoted by WNYC.org. He'd be someone evangelicals could get behind, instead of settling for Bachmann despite her broader electability problems. He'd give Southerners a candidate. He'd also be a powerhouse the Tea Party could get behind to build on the momentum they created last year. Big chunks of the GOP base are still looking for a candidate, and Perry "checks a lot of those boxes."

LOL! Palin picks her VP. SARAH rules - remember he asked SARAH for her support because he needed it to win his election in TX.

And SARAH will not pick Perry as VP - He’s OK but not of her caliber.

(*sniff, sniff*) You know what I think, n00b? I think you're a troll and that the mods should keep a close eye on you.

You seem to be in the habit of calling Christians liars, attacking "apostate" churches, yelling racist, calling Rupert Murdoch a pornographer and comparing him to George Soros, feigning concern about Track Palin's wife getting pregnant out of wedlock, ranting about the "unconstitutional" Patriot Act, and making lots of look-at-me-I'm-a-conservative RINO accusations.

Bush lied about being conservative and about being a Christian while he as campaigning. (...) Also Bush, continued lying about being a Christian. Liars kept putting out stories about Bush having Bible studies in the White House, etc. Only to find out in the end that he is NOT a born again Christian at all.

Notice how Perry's lackeys are all over the place spreading his claims of being a Christian. The "story" does not show that he's accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. There is nothing in his own words of his conversion and being born again.

Talking trash about Obama and cheering for Sarah Palin will only get you so far here. It will fool people for a while, but at some point they'll see your agenda.

Carry on.

He’s far from right. Like I said Perry asked SARAH for her support to win his election. LOL! And faithful SARAH lived up to her promise to help anyone that asks.

Palin/West - take that to the bank.

THe same reason looser like McCain and Dole did.....The “establishment” GOP money behind them, who did not listen and poured money and effort into the candidate whose “turn” it was.

Enough of electing slick politicians! They are what is ruining this country. Time for a REAL “little people” conservative patriot!

Where did you get that from? Not from this thread - I don’t remember scrolling past that. Not cool - that’s for sure.

Are you saying it's pre-ordained that Perry is the nominee? The establishment has decided, and we have no say in the matter?

Are you suggesting a third party? You've gotta know that would guarantee Obama's re-election. You don't want that, do you?

Palin/West - take that to the bank.

We just don't know that yet. But I certainly understand your enthusiasm, they would make a formidable team!

Palin/West - take that to the bank.

Sure seems like West is running for that position.

That ticket would win in a landslide.

Right.

Isn’t it amazing how many bad things are associated with Rick Perry?

You forgot is a “Karl Rove Candidate”. Once a Karl Rove Candidate, always a Karl Rove Candidate.

Same talking points? Mostly.

Get paid? No.

I just think Rick Perry is the worst.

I won’t support a Bilderberg.

I won’t support a Karl Rove Candidate.

Perry is both.

I was having an argument on another thread about neocons like Randy S. Palin got Randy S. from the McCain campaign. He is a neocon, but she has gotten rid of him and replaced him with realists.

Palin had Randy S. as an advisor. That does not make her a Globalist. It did mean that she was a neocon, but now that she has realist advisors, she’s a realist.

Why do you feel the need to post Ron Paul graphics?

Where are your pictures with Reagan?

Don't have any I bet. You probably have pix with Al Gore.

Just to let you know, o.k., so those are probably not for public consumption? You're being so nice to share with us less-worthy?

Appreciate you sharing those. You are MOST gracious.

Make a post as to how those images can be used. Make a post at the very least acknowleging your copyright.

You could just dismiss any concerns of financial benefit by stating: "copyrighted for the world". John Lennin did that with an albumn Apple Records released.

ONE alleged Bilderberg meeting and a meeting with Rove 13 years ago and you think he’s WORSE than Romney? Worse than Huntsman? Worse than McCain??? Worse than Ron Paul???

I’m well aware of Perry’s faults but if you think anyone but kooks care about a Bilderberg meeting or a decade-old meeting with Rove, you’re mistaken.

We’ve got to find the most credible candidate we can to beat Obama or our country is doomed. Perry, for whatever his faults, is a gazillion times more appealing than Obama and, as the story alludes, he’s the best chance to unify the party. Party unity = beating Obama.
