Jul 20, 2011 Will the Texas governor elbow his way into the crowded presidential race? Longtime Perry watcher Evan Smith of the Texas Tribune talks about why he thinks Perry will run and what kind of candidate he'd be.
[snip]
We spoke with the Texas Tribune's Evan Smith about the man he has followed since the early 1990s. A former editor of Texas Monthly magazine, Smith says he's convinced Perry will make a run at the White House, and tells us why other Republican hopefuls should be worried.
You know...they attack this guy for Immigration..well Ronald Reagan did what? He granted amnesty-which I was NOT for. They do the Rick Perry was a democrat...well Ronald Reagan was what one time?
And on and on we go. Now, I personally got to do some serious research on the guy since I believe he may well be the next POTUS.
And no..dont any of you Palin fans start with the links. I will do my own research since I have kin in Texas.
Lt gov for a few years , 12 years ago!
I’m surprised by the uninformed comments from fellow Texans. Maybe Texas Monthly should have addressed the article to Texans instead of yankees ...
Dear Yankee - Eight things you ought to know before you start writing stories about Rick Perry. Youre welcome.

Sorry CW I just noticed the other thread about the billionaires/Gov. Perry yada yada NPR.
I guess if they are giving money to him they support him in the most meaningful way. (lol) Thanks again.
You really need to talk to someone other than yourself.
Dear RED SOUTH: This article was written for people like you who spew uninformed talking points.
Dear Yankee

That used to be true. Governors' seats in southern states were purposely kept weak. But since Perry has been in that office for 10 years he has filled 100% of all the appointed positions with "his" people. He is a powerful governor.
>> “Perry himself went to California and got many many companies to come to Texas.” <<
.
You’re sayoing Perry is Jerry Brown’s main man?
He was Lt. Gov. too...
And state house representative and Ag Commissioner but the real power comes from his longevity in office which has allowed him over time to appoint every member of every appointive position called for in the Texas Goverment. That is several 1000s of positions which now can come to the front and get things done for him that other governors couldn’t under the so called weak governor senario. Make no mistake Perry weilds power from his position.
EXACTLY!! Now NPR is pimping Rick Perry! It's amazing what an invite from the Bilderbergers will do for a Presidential hopeful's career. Evidently, the New World Order Elites approve of Rick Perry. (And they disapprove of Palin and Bachmann.)
Very instructive for those with eyes to see.
Well here are two men who are NOT fans of Perry (or Palin I'd wager).
They both served in Texas government. One is now a trial lawyer and a lobbyist (Parker) and the other is a radio personality (Hightower). And they've both crossed paths and swords with Rick Perry.
They are the face of our opposition.
Carl A. Parker: Why Perry Won't Run for President
Jim Hightower: Perry Is Peddling Texas Snake Oil
About the same way she sounded about McCain who she regaled as a "common sense conservative". Lack of credibility here...
It's great that he's well connected! Go Rick!
They’re uninformed and proud of it.
Too stupid to read the interview.
LOL
Or maybe they did and it made them angry about how Perry can campaign against their “guy.”
‘Cause they certainly couldn’t have take away that this a “lap-dog” interview.
‘I am just remarking on how the Left is in love with Rick.’
Try again.
From Democratic Underground:
Rick Perry is dangerous because he appeals both to the Christian Fundamentalists and to the Chamber of Commerce types and can tout his record of job creation in Texas.
24. I’m still predicting Romney, but Perry scares me.
I think the wackos would love Perry.
An excerpt from a recent article on that very subject:
"Government textbooks and the Texas Constitution say that ours is a weak-governor state. A strict constructionist would insist that the governors power is largely limited to making appointments to state boards and commissions and to vetoing bills.
In practice, the political power of the governor has expanded dramatically over the past four decades. Governor Perry has upended the political culture by establishing what amounts to a cabinet form of government.
The governors office isnt just a power center; it is the power center. Every high-level appointee answers to Perry. Every agency head answers to Perry. He is able to dominate the Legislature in ways no governor before him did. Perrys will to power has reshaped the traditional leadership roles. Before he came along, it was acknowledged that the lieutenant governor was the states most powerful official.
This situation is not entirely of Perrys making. The cultural change that paved the way for the governors office to become
the power center of state government was the arrival of two prominent politicians. These were, of course, Ann Richards and George W. Bush, our first modern celebrity governors."
Perry was the state’s first Republican lieutenant governor since Reconstruction, taking office on January 19, 1999 until his ascension to the governorship on December 21, 2000 upon the resignation of then-Governor George W. Bush.
So he was also a lieutenant governor. Someone who runs the state.
