First lady takes on food deserts
Posted by: CNN White House Producer Alexander Mooney
Michelle Obama unveiled the latest push in her healthy-eating campaign Wednesday, announcing several national and regional food retailers have pledged to expand into a string of low-income markets where finding nutritious food options is nearly impossible.
If a parent wants to pack a piece of fruit in a childs lunch, if a parent wants to add some lettuce to a salad at dinner, they shouldnt have to take three city busses to go to another community to make that possible, the first lady said at during a White House event marking the new effort.
National chains participating in the partnership include Wal-Mart, Walgreens and SuperValu, which have agreed to open or expand more than 1,000 locations as part of the effort to eliminate what the Department of Agriculture calls food deserts throughout the country.
A handful of regional retailers are also involved, including Calhoun foods, an Alabama-based chain that currently serves low-income communities with six stores. The minority-owned company, which in the depths of the recession two years ago was forced to cut back workers hours to avoid layoffs, said they plan to open 10 additional stores in the coming years in currently under-served communities. CEO Greg Calhoun as well as Jimmie Coleman, a manger at the chain, were on hand for the event.
The White House says the collective effort will result in serving nearly 10 million Americans who currently have little affordable food alternatives to convenience stores and fast food chains.

3 buses to get lettuce! I fail to believe this. Prove it.
WHY did you have to post that picture. That looks delicious! Now I want cake.
Com’on! Stores in those areas don’t have the same selection as in more affluent areas. Okay, you won’t find a triple creme Camembert, possibly no caper berries. But no lettuce!
Please!
“Stay Out ‘Da Food” be our chant!
I’ll venture that those are just DELICIOUS!
The profit margin in grocery retailers is razor thin. Between the normal loss due to spoilage and breakage; add to that the loss due to increased theft from Holder’s people, retailers cannot afford to stay open in the inner city. These retailers may make big productions about opening locations in low rent areas of a few cities, but within a few years these locations will be closed. No business, no matter how large, can afford to operate at a loss. It doesn’t matter how much one loud-mouthed, fat-a**ed, Marxist First Sasquatch wants it. Not going to happen.
Profit drives the economic engine of this country. At least it does until Odumbo and his band of economically illiterate buffoons succeeds in destroying the economy of America.
B was remodeling a little house in Montgomery. AL that had a Krispy Kreme nearby. They had a sign that lit up when the donuts came out of the cooker! Only time ever worked that hard in hot weather and gained weight. There is nothing like donuts still wartm out of the cooker. I like the cake donuts, with sweet milk.
So you’re giving a thief a car AND a gun?
ha ha.
