Eight things you ought to know before you start writing stories about Rick Perry. Youre welcome.
(Excerpt) Read more at texasmonthly.com ...
I’m not so sure that just anyone can beat Obama, he has virtually the entire media on his side covering for him.
y’all quit picking on that boy. Ya know it ain’t right to pick on people with mental deficiencies. Bless his lil ol’ heart :)
Of course he’s repudiated Al Gore since then. Did you REALLY think he wouldn’t have?
“According to news reports at the time, many conservative Texas Democrats put stock in Gores campaign, among them former Gov. Dolph Briscoe and then-House Speaker Gib Lewis, who flew to Washington to endorse Gore.”
“Later, Perry said he found out Gore was far from a real conservative.”
“Going through that (Gore experience) was part of what started me through the process of changing parties in 1989,” Perry said. “I came to my senses.”
More recently:
“Late last year, Perry revisited his disagreement with Gore over mans impact on global warming. Suggesting he’d seen the light on the climate issue while Gore had drifted into darker territory, Perry joked: “I certainly got religion. I think he’s gone to hell.”
Fault him for backing Al Gore in 1998, when Perry was still a democrat and Al Gore was the most conservative democrat in the race. But don’t pretend he still supports Al Gore today.
Alright...I will review the evidence you submitted.
The more important clincher for me to support Perry(if Palin doesn’t get in the ring) is whether he is authentically Tea Party supporting, or is he another RINO pretending to like the Tea Party.
The latest debt ceiling fiasco of RINO politicians backstabbing the Tea Party is got me triple-checking the candidate that is wooing me for my vote.
I’ll be watching Perry...and the first sign of RINO in him and I’ll be hating on him until eternity even if he’s elected POTUS.
Believe me, he is vulnerable. The media couldn’t protect his congressional water carriers on November 2010, and they can’t protect him in 2012. Don’t misunderstand what I am saying. Relative to Obama, Perry’s an improvement. But if Palin secures the nomination, as I believe she will, it will be incredibly tough for most alert voters to deliberately choose another four years of dealing with the Obama wrecking ball, when they are presented with someone as outstanding as Palin, as the only other realistic choice on the ballot.
One thing you need to know: Paul Burka is a LIBERAL. Texas Monthly is a liberal rag.
That said, he nails it pretty well, and might at least educate his liberal MSM brethren not to be too far off when they go after Perry.
Not if, when. And much sooner than we will be ready.
Burka wasnt ‘glowing’. To Burka, calling someone a Tea Party conservative is a harsh criticism.
But I think, some of the liberal stories on Perry, the ones that go “lookee here, he’s doing a prayer rally, how weird!” are actually helping Perry get attention.
“I noticed that Perry’s li’l appearance before the secretive Bilderbergers was conveniently not mentioned in the puff piece”
... because that meaningless non-fact is of interest only to kooks and tin-foil hat wearers.
“If he wants my vote, hell have to be like Palin.”
Perry is more conservative than Palin.
“The more important clincher for me to support Perry(if Palin doesnt get in the ring) is whether he is authentically Tea Party supporting, or is he another RINO pretending to like the Tea Party.”
Perry spoke at the April 15th, 2009 Tea Party rally in Austin Texas, with Michael Williams and conservative activists. one of the first ones. He was out in front on this.
That day, he got a lot of Liberal Media heat because of some ‘secession’ comments.
I was there. The amusing thing to me was there was a guy in the back yelling “SECEDE!” all through his and other speeches.
What did Perry have to gain by traveling to Istanbul Turkey to give a secret speech, which no one knows the contents of, to a secret organization, which no one knows the agenda of?
Tell me how is that good for America? Is that the kind of candidate you want to entrust our Country, at it's most desperate moment, to? And how am I a "tin foil hat wearer" because I have a big problem with Perry's personal decision to go and do that?
Is that our standard now? Really?
My 17 year old son would be better than Obama. Maybe we should have him run.
Or better yet. Let's start cheering for McCain again. He'd be better than Obama. Or Rudy. Will you happily support them?
Self-congratulation? You have to be kidding. Have you ever been the victim of a systematic slander campaign? I have. If I couldve had a third party volunteer to make a movie setting the story straight, yes you bet Id have been jumping up and down glad to accept it. A good reputation is a thing of great value, and it hurts mightily when it is stolen away in the night. The movie is a just response to an unjust injury. Or did I miss the memo, where conservatives are now against getting at the truth?
And the unserious governor meme died with the email-gate that never was. If anything, that fiasco highlighted the inherent difference between a strong and a weak governorship. Texas governors are not the hands on CEOs that Alaska governors are, and the emails show it. Even her enemies have had to concede the emails reflect a deeply involved, conscientious, hands-on, hard-working, ethical person, about whom that last thing you could think, if you knew the facts, was that she was somehow unserious about her work.
As for the quitting meme, there are some few who may hold that against her, but there are a whole lot of us who think she did the right thing. So many of us, in fact, that her endorsement during the 2010 shellacking was a highly sought after prize. What value would the endorsement of a true quitter have? Zip.
So something is wrong with your math. I think it has something to do with the difference between quitter and quitting. Follow me on this. You dont still have the first job you ever held, do you? I hope not. I hope you quit that job when it had run its course and you moved on to something better. Does that make you a quitter? Well, youve quit lots of times, right? Isnt that a pattern of quitting? But by that measure, were all quitters, right?
So whats really meant by quitter? Weve all faced circumstances where we felt like dodging the difficulty rather than resolving it. That alone doesnt make someone a quitter. But if we could have resolved that difficulty, but didnt, because we were too lazy or too fearful to face it, and if we have a life pattern of running from difficulty, thats really what it means, in my mind, to be a quitter.
So I think most people use the term hypocritically when they apply it to Palin. Have you achieved your maximum life potential? Done everything you wanted to do? Faced every single challenge in your life with fearlessness and hard work? Never faced a problem that you couldnt tackle head on and pull out a success against all odds? Ever? Really? Because if you aren't living life to your maximum potential, it means you quit somewhere along the line, you gave up and chose to not give it your all. Isn't that what it means to be a quitter?
Yet Palin did not face a problem that it was in her power to resolve. I am an attorney. There are scenarios in the law where it is guaranteed you cannot win if you play by the rules. No amount of cleverness or tenacity or determination or force of will could buy her an escape from the ongoing defect in the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Acts (AS 39.52) that was being used to smother her governorship. It was her Kobayashi Maru.
Or, by analogy to chess, her queen was trapped. Protect the queen, and certain checkmate follows. Sacrifice the queen, but on your own terms, and you may survive to see better days in the endgame. Be honest. If you were faced with that dilemma, what would you do? If you were smart, you would have done exactly as she did. It was the best of all the bad choices available. And if winning remained your objective throughout, if this tactic was your last best chance to win against all odds, and you took it, isnt that the exact opposite of quitting?
As for the money, it never ceases to amaze me how we Palinistas, in a conservative, ostensibly capitalist discussion forum like FR, have to constantly defend Palin for making however much money she wants to work to make. God bless her and may God double her money for every socialist who want her to feel guilty for making it.
Yes, it was the election cycle of 1988. Al & Tipper Gore of Tennessee were famous DEMOCRATIC CONSERVATIVES, believe it or not. Perry was also a conservative democrat at the time. (So was I.)
Al and Tipper came to the nation's attention for their war demanding labeling of violent and sexual movies and songs and they spoke conservative Christian language the entire step of the way.
Wiki puts it like this:
According to CNN, Gore ran his campaign as, "a Southern centrist, [who] opposed federal funding for abortion. He favored a moment of silence for prayer in the schools and voted against banning the interstate sale of handguns."[5] In addition, CNN notes, "in 1988, for the first time, 12 Southern states would hold their primaries on the same day, Super Tuesday. Gore thought he would be the only Southern candidate. He had not counted on Jesse Jackson."[5]Gore began to criticize Jackson for his Mid-East policies.[6] In particular, "Albert Gore Jr. assailed Mr. Jackson's foreign policy views yesterday and said he was 'dismayed' by Mr. Jackson's 'embrace of Arafat and Castro'." [7] Jackson responded by stating that, "The issue is not whether the Israelis and Palestinians are moral equivalents. Both of them are human beings and both are trapped in the cycle of death and pain. And they are trapped in the cycle of mutual annihilation. I wanted to offer leadership that will move from mutual annihilation to coexistence to break the cycle of death." [7] Gore was heavily criticized for his attacks against both Jackson and Dukakis.[8] Jackson also retracted some of his previous statements.[9]
I was alive in 1988, and I voted in 1988, and I gave the nod to GHWBush who eventually won election on a "no new taxes" pledge and a "Strong America" stance.
I distinctly remember Gore and his public, conservative image. No one at the time knew it was all a lie. Nor did fellow conservative democrat, Rick Perry.
So, we're talking about Gore presenting himself as an anti-abortion, pro-gun, pro-Israel, pro-prayer, pro-family, anti-hollywood, conservative democrat.
Once selected as Clinton's mate, Gore immediately toed the national democrat line. In fact, he appeared to embrace it as if liberalism had really been his belief system all along....which it probably, covertly had been.
A surprisingly good article. It’s doubtful I’d find much to agree with Burka but he gives a good overview of Perry while slapping down some of the more common criticisms, including what you often see parroted around here.
Check with Cincinatus’ Wife or Clarity or maybe Arrowhead1952
They probably know of one.
Perry, Social Conservatives and the Road to the Top
"I've talked especially with the Tea Party people," he says. "If you want to say on the correct side of them, you need to stick with Perry."
.
Well, ok...
You and Barack are doing a fine job of that...
You could at least buy Texas a dinner, maybe a few drinks to smooth things over, before consumating that overused insult...
I make a grocery list and a "to do" list but I don't make FReeper ping lists.
Clairity? How about you? If you do please add me.
