The news and blogosphere is filled with responses to the July 14, 2011 story by Joshua Green, the Senior Editor of the Atlantic, entitled "Michele Bachmann's Church Says the Pope Is the Antichrist." That is because it raises a serious matter which should not be taken lightly, and one which the candidate must address. First, let me share some personal context. I am what is often called a "revert" to the Catholic Church, someone who returned to the Church of my childhood after a long search for the truth. I love being a Catholic Christian. I hold an undergraduate degree and a master's degree in Catholic theology. I am a dissertation away from obtaining a PhD in Catholic Moral Theology. I am also a member of the Clergy, a Deacon. However, I write this article as a private and very concerned citizen.

I agree with you. Absolutely. I love Catholic Theology, particularly the thinking of St. Thomas Aquinas. Nothing on earth is perfect...there is always that search for Truth and the abilities of Satan should never be underestimated—or his intelligence. I do like CS Lewis’s thinking, also, and admire the Pope’s thinking, except for a few minor details, but admit that he has to be political at some times.
So, the Catholic Church is like any other entity on earth. It is made up of humans and because of that there will be error. I just pray that the Catholic Church being so enormous can keep itself pointed in the right direction and not fall prey to the devil. I put nothing past him and have been proven wise many, many times. But I do not pretend that I know the Truth as far as the entities on earth exist...we live in very unsettling times...with much deceit. Faith helps, but when inconsistencies happen, one does have to wonder with this wonderful entity God has given us for a reason....the brain.
OH, HORRORS!!!!!
She's at least as far right as Garrison Keillor!!!!
You just called BC a lying hack, BC is a veteran highly respected poster here! It`s one thing to call little ole me names, but attacking the most respected people here, will not make you many friends
LOL
The question is not whether they discuss politics in their sermons but whether they discuss the Papacy being the antichrist in sermons. My guess is they don't. But certainly without evidence that Bachmann sat there while this was being discussed in sermons I see no reason to hold equivalence between this situation and Obama's.
Claiming Bachmann supported Carter against Reagan is exactly opposite of what Bachmann did.
If he wants his posts taken seriously, he stop spewing misinformation against conservative candidates.
You are correct, BC didn’t “lie” he just left out some information damaging to his cause.
I have never called anybody the names you call people, the latest from you is calling BC a lying hack...do you not know that is wrong?
PS - Notice it is an attack on the legitamacy of the Office of Pope....not on the Christianity of Roman Catholics. I know this is upseting to many Roman Catholics. However, I get “disturbed” when a Roman Catholic tries to tell me that theirs is the ONLY true church and the rest of us are apostates to some degree from RC. This disagreement is at the heart of the Reformation and it isn’t ever going to disappear. However, the days of warring over this are LONG past.
Reagan ran in 1976. Being such a newbie on FR, you probably did not know this.
Bachmann could have supported Reagan over Ford in 1976. Instead she chose the worst of the three-—Jimmy Carter.
Let’s see...
Bachmann ditches her Church six days before she announces for President, because it has some anti-Catholic bigotry on its website, bigotry that she has known about since it surfaced during her first run for Congress in 2006. Yet she waits until just before her Presidential run to resign.
Three questions. Why did she resign from the Church? Why did she resign from the Church at this particular time? and How can we be assured that she will not abandon conservative principles when it is politically expedient to do so?
(Better reach deep into your grab bag of talking points)
No, not true.
Rather, all Protestant Churches are "anti-Catholic in a BIG way. Just like the Catholic Church is anti-Protestant in a big way, and I say that as a Protestant who loves my Catholic brothers and sisters.
Catholicism and Protestantism are fundamentally different. If I thought that Catholics were correct in holding to those doctrines about which we disagree then I would be a Catholic.
And I'm not.
Your points are valid.
"Happily for the states, they enjoy the utmost freedom of religion. This freedom arises from that multiplicity of sects, which pervades America, and which is the best and only security for religious liberty in any society."
James Madison, Virginia Ratifying Convention, 12 June 1788

Oh, so fool is a term of endearment?
Not according to the Bible:
Matthew 5:22
But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, Raca! shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, You fool! shall be in danger of hell fire.
Rita, you sure have taken a bad turn in attitude.
How much work do you consider necessary for salvation. If we memorized all the Scripture, or even flogged ourselves as used to be common practice would that be sufficient?
Maybe it is easier to just kiss the ring of the Pope, sounds easy enough, but then again Salvation is a free gift of God, which to choose?
I won’t assign any Catholics to hell, nor could I, it is a job we must all do on our own.
What would even be the point of accepting Jesus as your personal Savior, if you didn't believe that you were going to Heaven?
I have perfect peace that when I die, I will be immediately in the presence of the Lord. No arrogance here, just trust the scriptures.
Remember; Baptism my water, Baptism by blood, Baptism by desire...
Bill Donahue is an anti-Catholic, pro-homosexual activist who is a lunatic. “ <<<
Bill is no more pro-homosexual than you are. (or, maybe not).
IF you are Catholic, facts may be meaningful as applied from the Church. That fact would be that abstaining from ACTING on illicit behaviours is the appropriate rule. Whether it be a lay person Catholic, a married person, etc.
Donahue nor other Catholics do not condemn people, but illicit acts. As in SIN. Donahue gives as good as he gets in the media. Good for him.
I don't think it will be, since, if she wins the nomination, she will be adroit enough to make at least one well-publicized appearance before a Catholic organization and explain this in a sensible and moving way. Something akin to JFK's speech on his Catholic faith to a group of Protestant clergymen in Houston in 1960.
I don't know why you limit these considerations to a possible general election campaign. Aren't there a significant number Catholic voters who could possibly turned off Bachmann during the primaries with whom she should mend fences?
