Salon Exclusive: The Texas governor's uncomfortably close ties to groups that glorify the Lost Cause
[UPDATED BELOW]
Rick Perry made national headlines in 2009 when, during a speech to a Tea Party group, he floated the possibility that Texas could secede from the union. But the governor's substantive ties to the neo-Confederate movement may be deeper than previously known.
A 1998 voting guide published by a leading neo-Confederate group and obtained by Salon not only endorses Perry for lieutenant governor but also describes him as "a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans." Perry's office did not respond to a request for comment about the governor's possible membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
This is the document, published by the League of the South on its website DixieNet.org; it was unearthed by Edward Sebesta, a Texas-based independent researcher and co-editor of "Neo-Confederacy: A Critical Introduction." Click the image for larger size.
[BIG BIG BIG SNIP]
UPDATE 7/14/11: Perry spokeswoman Catherine Frazier issues this denial: "[T]he governor never joined that group nor has he ever paid any dues to it."
I've asked her if he has a position on the pending license plate issue, and if I hear back I will update this post.

It does to the race baiting, poverty pimps and their handmaidens in the MSM.

I recall a Lady who had committed capital crimes while under the influence of drugs-and a culture that encouraged excess.
On death row she appears to have had actual prison conversion. And once the drugs ceased to govern her thought —and she became a new creation she did not fight her sentenced death. Her story was broadcast by such as the 700 Club(Pat Robertson) and Focus on the Family(James Dobson) IMO hers was the exception to the general rule governing prison conversions.SO I agree with talhajus
Perry’s best friend is a political consultant? What’s the story on this David Weeks?
The problem with America is now and always has been New England Yankees. They should be purged.
Are you recommending this to all FReepers who are posting Perry threads, links and information on FR?
You're going to be very busy.
So what, you need to get over it and quit playing into their hands. A lot of my neighbors have Confederate Flags we're all racists? It's you that has the problem.
US Route 1 in Virginia is named Jefferson Davis Highway is that racist too? We have a high school near here that has black students and God forbid it is named Lee-Jackson High School! OMG! /sarc
What the hell? I’m a Daughter of the Confederacy/Texas...and have a certificate to prove it...it’s just an acknowledgement of your lineage in a heritage association. We protect the history, preserve documents, like a collection of letters sent from our great, greats who served. Even if Perry is a Son of the Confederacy, what is it to these bast***rds...Are we supposed to pretend that Lincoln didn’t come down here and illegally commit war on a sovereign country that seceded from the over-reaching government in Washington, DC? lol
Sometimes I am ashamed to be a Freeper, this is one of those times.
Reading a different post— by the Avalon project-on the
Continental Congress—and the 3/5ths rule. It seems clear
from the forming of our Constitution - past the questionable
passage of the 14th Amendment following the Civil War—to this present discourse there has been a deep seated animus /hostility manifest between the Yankee politicians and those from the South. The one instance where I find myself agreeing with the dam Yankees is in recognition that the solid southern Democrat seemed to foster such anti-social secret societies like the Ku Klux Klan-And tend to focus on the divisive. Where I am conflicted is when I consider how much this I agree with is reflected in the entire deep seated animus by too many Americans for the South —For there is much in Southern culture to laud that is not seen
in the Yankee Carpetbagger.
Jim is retiring this term so we hope to get a real human being in next time ~ and preferably someone who has ALWAYS been elected as a Republican.
NO MORE RINOS IN VIRGINIA.
There are plenty of liberals elsewhere, as well.
Bet our SAT math scores are much higher than yours (Bwahahahahahaha!)
Why do you feel it is necessary to “school” me on the mainstream media?
I am not “playing into their hands.”
I am getting in their face.
Well, really, just the people who start the threads. You, smoothsailing are 2 that I can think of. You might have some new ones. I don’t know how the Perry organization works.
I have read articles that Lenewaee County in Michigan was home to several KKK. I have a collection of Jackson (Michigan) Patriot papaers wherein there were ads nearly every week for the KKK to have picnics in the park complete with games and prizes.
This was in 1988 or 1989. I don’t have any clue about David Weeks. The David Weeks story doesn’t seem that interesting.
Because the already known stuff (Karl Rove) is as bad as you can get. Bilderberg is as bad as you can get.
Some people have “never vote for a Bilderberg” as a rule, and have for years.
And some people have “never vote for a Rove candidate” after what he did to Christine.
And Perry is both.
Well I didn’t read that closely, but if you’re saying “yay, Palin, so am I”. I’m with you on that.
