HUDSON, NY A group of nine Hudson mothers, all clients of the Department of Social Services, have filed a lawsuit against the Columbia County government in an attempt to stop the county plan to move DSS two miles out of the city to the former Walmart building on Fairview Avenue in Greenport.
The group, who all say they walk to the current DSS location at 25 Railroad Avenue, are bringing an Article Seven lawsuit against the county stating that the plan is moving forward without needed social, environmental or traffic impact studies. The legal action states that ignoring these responsibilities violates the State Environmental Quality Review Act.
The countys lease on 25 Railroad Ave. runs out this year and a proposal has been made to move DSS to Walmart ahead of other county offices and the major renovations proposed in the overall $14 million to $16 million office consolidation plan.
They state in the suit, filed Wednesday, that putting DSS outside of the city of Hudson, in which city, the suit claims, 54 percent of clients live, will put an undue burden on those in need of services like food stamps, rent assistance, counseling and more.

People have a lot of nerve. And lost any sense of shame about 3 generations ago.
I would bet most of the the (let me guess - “single”?) moms filing this suit have a newer mobile phone and car than I. And I bet their nails and hair are all fixed up, too!
Why do they need to have the office there if they are already plugged into the services?
You are right. I think the trek to DSS is only done once a month if that. I guess these welfare moms feel it is a great inconvenience - probably disrupts their busy schedule of watching Oprah and making more babies.
Even without a photo I’m pretty sure a 4-mile walk once a month wouldn’t hurt these women.
Maybe the lawyer who filed the suit pro bono, could give them a ride to the new office in his car.
Undue Burden?? Geez what about the undue burden these recipients place on those of us who work so they can eat. You want your free money walk the 2 miles to get it...Many of us have to commute farther than that to earn it for you.
Maybe even paid them, either in cash or extra goodies for their trouble.
These moms are looking for free taxi service!

Perhaps they should sue to include delivery service by the government for their checks and groceries.
Maybe making them walk 10+ miles to get their dole would help these people develop some initiative to change their loser-lifestyles. Heck...maybe 20+ miles.
Walk? This is New York, dude. They'll just call an ambulance and Medicaid will pay for it.

How right you are.
No joke. I'm sure some of them can claim that they are entitled to an accommodation and must either be provided everything at their door or taxpayer funded transportation and escort.
The local Democrat Party. The City of Hudson is controlled by the Dems and the rest of the county (Columbia) is mostly Republican. The County Republicans want to get the county office buildings out of Hudson and save money overall. There is plenty of vacant commercial property to choose from. The Dems are afraid their welfare base may move out of the city if the welfare office leaves. Unbelievable huh?
How about you walk the two miles to the new office, and while you're at it, pick up a bag of trash off the side of the road. Turn in the trash in order to receive your check. The walk home is a freebie.
Sincerely,
The Providers
