A three-year-old girl died after accidentally shooting herself in the head with a gun she had found hidden under a mattress, police said.

Lilianna Moore, three, had been left home alone by her father, who was out visiting his girlfriend when his daughter picked up the loaded gun in a bedroom at their apartment in St Louis, Missouri.

Neighbours reported seeing a paramedic racing out of the building carrying Lilianna's limp body in his arms, blood pouring from her head.

The horrific accident happened at around 8.40pm on Tuesday, as Lilianna played in a bedroom at her home in the Shaw neighbourhood.

She found the gun hidden between two mattresses, picked it up and accidentally pulled the trigger.

Lilianna was rushed to hospital, but she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Shocked neighbours who gathered outside the apartment block to grieve said they couldn't believe a loaded gun had been left in the same room as a toddler.

Ali Lee, 24, who lives in the same building, told the Post Dispatch: 'It's more sad than anything. Sad that you can have a three-year-old running around with a loaded gun.'

Police have not yet made any arrests, and are still determining whether they will file charges against the girl's father.

Two more St Louis children were badly injured in unrelated shootings within the space of just two hours on Tuesday night.

Daddy leaves a three-year-old home alone while he’s out getting his ashes hauled and the gun under the mattress is the problem??????

Sad that you can have a three-year-old running around with a loaded gun.

Sad that such a stupid and self-centered man had custody of a child. (Equally sad if the parent had been the mother.)

The gun must have had a very easy trigger pull.......

This is so sad, and this child’s home situation is multiplied many times over in our country these days.

Who called the paramedics if the girl was ‘alone’?

Yeah - how can a 3 year old lift up a mattress enough to get the gun that’s under it?

When I have to change the sheets on our bed I have to wrestle with the mattress to pull the corners up to get the sheets on it, and I’m an adult and 5’10”.

Not saying this incident didn't happen but I am doubtful; first of all, a handgun, even a small one, would be kinda heavy for a three year old to lift and hold to their head. Second, the hands of a three year old are small to operate a handgun. Third, the trigger pull on a double action revolver or a double action semi is usually around seven pounds which would be very difficult for a three year old to do. If a single action, revolver or semi, then the hammer has to be pulled back and cocked, complex and difficult for a three year old. Sooo, a lot of improbable events would have to happen for a three year old to shoot himself/herself in the head with a handgun. So, I say doubtful until more evidence is presented......

I agree. I'm pretty sure most 3-year-olds would have a hard time pulling the trigger on any of my hand guns.

Yes, that evil gun lurking under the mattress is responsible for the ignorance and neglect of the child by the father. What will those guns do next?

Who sleeps with a gun under the mattress?? What 3 year old searches beneath a mattress? What 3 year old is strong enough to pull a trigger? This just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Three isn’t too young to drill with the Eddie Eagle gun safety rules.

When you see a gun,

Stop. Don’t Touch. Leave the room. Tell an adult.

I practice with my kids with an airsoft pistol. I’ll set it out while they’re playing and sit there and wait for one of them to notice it.
They’ll eventually see it, look at me and I’ll ask “what do you do?” They say “stop, don’t touch, leave the room, tell an adult”.

No kidding!!! He left a little 3 year old home alone. Gun or no gun, they don’t see this as a problem?

Here is the source of the related incidents info that was on the English website:

http://www.kmov.com/video/featured-videos/Rash-of-gun-violence-takes-aim-at-young-children-125530608.html

It appears to be a very poor local news piece in St. Louis.

Reporter’s statement: “More young men carry guns than wallets”

LIE

LEFT HOME ALONE- at 3!
She could have died from many other reasons if not by the gun. You don’t leave a baby home alone!
The moron should be charged with negligent homicide.
He was, no doubt, out visiting his ‘girlfriend’, making another baby.
Sickening.
So they blame the inanimate object. She could have fallen out of a window, stabbed herself, burned herself. Would a window, knife or oven be blamed then??

Well, it depends on what the father was out doing at the time. If he was fulfilling some fleshly desire of his, say, sex, booze, cigarettes, drugs,

well, then, that’s understandable...

if you’re a leftist.
