14 Cities That Are Being Eaten Alive By Public Sector Workers

Although national attention has largely focused on state budget battles like Wisconsin's union showdown and Minnesota's state shutdown, the real spending struggle is actually taking place at the local level.

As federal stimulus money runs dry, states are scaling back on municipal aid and revenue sharing. The cuts are adding immense pressure to strained local governments, many of which are already struggling under huge debt burdens. After years of declining tax revenues, cities and towns across the country are now running out of ways to deal with their ballooning budget deficits.

Public employee costs account for a large share of municipal budget woes. While worker compensation accounts for just 30% of state spending, personnel costs tends to eat up between 70% and 80% of local government funds.

The other day I was line to renew my CCW, talking to a ‘Park and Recs’ employee. We talked about how hard it was to get to the Sheriffs office to renew. Anyway, he mentioned that he had almost ‘1.5 years of comp time’ that he can never use...to hard to schedule...and they are always asking him to work more.

My heart went out to him.

The parasites have just about killed the host, and they have no intention of stopping their destructive ways.

It is going to get ugly...

Technically speaking, aren’t the drone bees the ones doing the work in a beehive?

If it were only 14 cities. I suspect that 75% + of all municipalities—cities, counties, state governments—have unsustainable benefits for their workers. These 14 cities are the first to reach the point where they don’t have any more money to pay for them. The other cities will hit this point too in the near future.

My daughter just earned her 4 year degree in social work and has grown even more conservative as she starts her first job. She's already gotten her supervisor fired just by passing along information from one of her clients that she had never shown up for work which the supervisor had turned in reports and billing time sheets to collect.

I suspect people like that are just the tip of the iceberg and one of the reasons my daughter got hired so quickly was to help root them out.

I'm surprised that Colorado Springs in #3 on this list, probably the only conservative city of the 14. Does anyone know why?

The 14:

  1. Central Falls, Rhode Island
  2. Costa Mesa, California
  3. Colorado Springs, Colorado
  4. Stockton, California
  5. Newark, New Jersey
  6. New Haven, Connecticut
  7. Providence, Rhode Island
  8. San Jose, California
  9. North Las Vegas, Nevada
  10. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  11. San Fransicko
  12. Chicago
  13. Los Angeles
  14. New York City

This article misses the point. Who negotiated these agreements? POLITICIANS. Who voted to underfund pensions and benefits? POLITICIANS. Why? TO GET RE-ELECTED.

WHO VOTED FOR THEM? There’s your problem.

No mention of Boulder, CO or Asheville, NC?

Both are liberal bastions.

When the parasites no longer have a host to prey, they usually move on to greener pastures to suck dry.

Hay, hay, hay....”Texas not included”.

Seriously, we do see all kinds of out- of state- license plates from many of the towns listed and welcome people who want to work and need to work.

Guess Rick Perry has done a lot of good for the “Great State of Texas.”
