McConnell: Debt ceiling will not get ‘a single Republican vote’
Washington Post ^ | July 1e, 2011 | Felicia Sonmez

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Wednesday that his party is united in opposing any effort to raise the debt ceiling, even as he maintained that the country will not default on its debt obligations.

“I bet there won’t be a single Republican vote to raise the debt ceiling at the end of the day,” the Senate’s top Republican said in a radio interview Wednesday morning with conservative commentator Laura Ingraham.

McConnell’s remarks come one day after the Kentucky Republican (sketched out a “back-up plan”) that would shift the political burden of raising the debt ceiling to President Obama and congressional Democrats, allowing for the borrowing limit to be raised without any Republican votes.

McConnell’s “Plan B” would first need to be approved by both chambers and signed into law by Obama in order to take effect – a prospect that was uncertain at best Tuesday evening, as some lawmakers of both parties balked at the idea.

Look, anyone old enough to have lived in the days of Richard Milhouse Nixon KNEW exactly what McConnell was suggesting.

WE, meaning Republicans, WENT THERE and the Democrats fought us tooth and nail to have ALL OF IT declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

They won.

This morning, as expected, McConnell had successfully baited the Democrats and you had Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi saying it all sounded good ~ apparently their staff people had not yet notified them that the McConnell "back up plan" was Richard Nixons' PLAN A FROM OUTER SPACE.

We are all ROTFLOAOFATM!!!

Obviously McConnell was right on top of this. He knew. He lived those days.

These threads crack me up!
That said, it is embarrassing to see so many alleged freepers running around like three-year-olds screaming “RINO!”

My take is this. We gave the House back to the GOP in order to stop Obama. They are refusing to use the power of the House to stop Obama. They have the power to stop him in his tracks.

And here I thought McConnell was supposed to be on our (conservatives) side. Silly me.

God save us from these idiots, traitors and cretins....

on ‘both’ sides of the aisle.

How about the backup plan where we make drastic cuts in spending to save the nation? What happened to that plan?

I wonder what other responsibilities that belong to the legislative branch would he like to pass off to the executive branch because they are too difficult for his branch to deal with.

FYI, your thoughts on the two plan approach: 'line in the sand' and 'complete capitulation' ?

My comments are the same as before: reference #21

I don’t care if the McConnell plan has political merit or not. He deliberately, stupidly undermined his own base and his counterparts in the House and caught them unawares.

The MSM is having a field day exploiting this GOP fracture, and he has set up the House to be blamed for any default and any shutdown.

A 10-year old could do a better job in project management, and I am livid.

“PLAN A FROM OUTER SPACE.” I like the sound of that.

Of course I like the rod from God concept too

What happened to the "Pay Go" pledge of 2009?

Down the Orwellian memory hole.

The (deliberate) amnesia of the press does not bode well for the future of the Republic.

Even Limbaugh has gone back to the idea that a RINO was a Democrat politician who ran as a Republican when he could no longer win as a Democrat (or because he was up and coming and popular and could knock off an old bull Democrat pol).

Sure, he made some mistakes thinking it was ideology, but it's really all about the CAUCUS.

What we have here is McConnell ridiculing the Democrats. They actually forgot every idea he put forward was a Nixon proposal, or actual legislative program, that was knocked down by the Supreme Court.

It's a silly little difference between voting FIRST for Nixon in 68 or voting FIRST for Nixon in 72. If 68 you remember that stuff. If 72 you don't.

That's why kicking the voting age back from 18 to 21 didn't do much ~ kids just don't care!

You say "Line Item Veto" to them, or "Sequestration" their eyes just glaze over and roll back in their heads ~ where, apparently, they still are except they can run around shouting RINO RINO RINO.

The joke's on them too ~ as bad as Pelosi and Reid.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Wednesday that his party is united in opposing any effort to raise the debt ceiling, even as he maintained that the country will not default on its debt obligations.

A lot of money is still coming in even if the debt ceiling is not raised & the bond holders get paid first (14th amendment & all that).

We are not going to default on our debt.

Don’t trust them. Their compromise is to give Obama what he wants, in return, they will pretend it’s a big victory for the Republicans.

Go ahead and be livid. Now, can you say "Joke's on you"?

How about this ~ tell me what your blood pressure goes to when I say "Sequestration".

Nice, hunh?

Now, another line "Line Item Veto".

Tore that gauge up didn't it.

Not that the ideas were any good when Republicans proposed them in the Nixon administration, or the Reagan administration, but you've forgotten all about them.

Both concepts have a number of forms that've been tried ~ always by Republicans. The purpose is to opt for processes that always cut spending.

Alas, neither the Supreme Court nor the broad masses of Senate Democrats agree with those concepts no matter how they're put forward.

Today Harry Reid indicated he agreed with the ideas ~ so that's a break from the Solid Democrat Phalanx of Opposition to Spending Cuts we've faced for the last 100 years!

Now, can you say "Full Funding"?

The Democrats used that idea for a good 20 years to STOP ALL CUTS.

And "cuts"?

Say that slowly ~ CUTS.

Feels good, right?

To a Democrat a cut, any cut, is a failure to provide full funding and account for population growth and inflation.

They don't even speak the same language as the rest of us. How can you believe their take on anything a Republican says?
