LAKE JACKSON After serving almost 24 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Ron Paul told The Facts this morning he will not be seeking another term for the District 14 seat.
Paul, 75, will instead focus on his quest for the presidency in 2012.
I felt it was better that I concentrate on one election, Paul said. Its about that time when I should change tactics.
His announcement will give enough time for anyone with aspirations for his seat to think about running, he said. Paul didnt want to wait for filing in the 2012 primary to let people know he wasnt seeking reelection.
I didnt want to hold off until in December, he said. I thought it shouldnt be any later than now.
Paul has served 12 terms in Congress. District 14 encompasses a 10-county area along the Gulf Coast.

He could sell balloons.
Ad hominems won’t get you anywhere.
If you don’t support drug legalization, then contact your state rep and urge him to draft a bill that has harsh penalties for the sale and use of drugs. But don’t advocate unconstitutional power grabs by the federal government. The 18th amendment was passed precisely because members of Congress realized that they didn’t have the Constitutional authority to ban alcohol with a simple federal law. The original intent of the commerce clause does not give Congress the authority to ban drug use within a specific state. The federal war on drugs is a clear assualt on the 10th amendment, and it should be opposed by all true conservatives.
The LINO (Libertarian in Name Only) is leaving?? Jeez, he is what is wrong with the LIBERTARIAN PARTY. I hope a real LIBERTARIAN/CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN will get his seat!!
I don’t care about Paul’s stand on drug legalization. To me, this is a secondary issue that will be duked out between the conservatives and libertarians down the road. If you’re worried about this now, you are not looking at the bigger picture of how conservatives and libertarians must unite to stop the progressive movement, and that’s what Paul has done, to bring both groups together.
Ron Paul votes to homosexualize the US Military
Really? I call BS! Thank you Rick Santelli, not Ron Paul...you can't rewrite history!
Because something has socially negative consequences, it justifies the presence of a massive, unaccountable police state?
Are you for banning alcohol and tobacco? I don’t know anyone who did not experiment with these drugs before moving on to marijuana and harder drugs.
Also, by the same logic, I assume that you are a supporter of the ban on incandescent light bulbs. I don’t know anyone who used drugs who did not have incandescent light bulbs in their homes.
In fact anyone running for President in 2012 and serving in Congress at the same time should be made to chose one or the other...not both!!!
I wonder if a similar-minded Republican will succeed Ron Paul in the House?
Go You Tube "Intervention" or watch it On Demand if you have Comcast and you'll see what Meth, coke, heroin, and other drugs do to people.
I don't believe it violates the 10th Amendment at all as I do not believe drugs is a state issue. It is a Federal issue and if you disagree then you would have to clear Eric Holder and the ATF of "Fast and Furious".
This involves guns and drugs and was carried out by a Federal Agency, not the State of Arizona. A FEDERAL AGENT was killed by weapons purchased by Mexican Drug Dealers during a FEDERAL operation.
I don't see how this is not a Federal issue. Drug use doesn't vary by state.
Heck today a Mexican Tour bus was busted for bringing millions of dollars of drugs into the US and that bus was allowed to enter under FEDERAL law.
Now if you can argue and prove that drugs like meth, heroin, coke, speed benefit society then I will take your argument, however, taking drugs off the street isn't a power grab.
Drugs promotes gang violence, illegal aliens, death, destruction, I can go on forever.
Uniting libertarians and conservatives is great to fight progressives, however, that doesn't mean we need to agree about legalization which I feel would destroy the nation.
And I will restate the most vile creature on Earth, George Soros, pours millions of dollars towards legalization...
Definitely not a cobbler though.”
Man, that’s just plain...mean. Ragging on the guy’s shoes.
(Mean, yes. Accurate...also yes.....).
Rick Santelli coined the terms “Chicago Tea Party”. He was referring to a potential strike by bond buyers to protest the lack of fiscal accountability by the Obama administration.
When have Tea Partiers advocated a strike by bond buyers?
Everyone here claims they want sound fiscal policy and smaller more constitutional government.
Then when some fellow actually proposes to do this they all call him a nut.
Maybe if he was a women with a great body they would go for it.
It also has been proven by science that it leads to mental illness!!!
Cigarettes do not harm society.
We have very strict alcohol laws. 90% of my cities income comes from DUI busts. They also send in underage kids into various restaurants to buy booze in order to bust restaurants. In Las Vegas I was carded every time I bought alcohol and I'm 28.
Your rebuttal will be drunk drivers killing people and I take that argument however you cannot argue that alcohol is the same as something that can kill you instantly like ecstasy.
Trust me, I didn't have a lily white childhood. I hung out with the wrong crowd and each and every one of them went directly from pot to heavier drugs.
Your argument about light bulbs has nothing to do with this discussion. You are just trying to make a mockery of this.
Last time I smoked a cigarette I wasn't so messed up that I wanted to rob a Walgreens.
Look at the crime related to drugs!!! Remember a few weeks ago a guy went and blasted away people on Long Island in order to rob a pharmacy?
I would assumed that drug deaths compared to alcohol deaths would be extremely higher.
Exclude DUI for one second. I know some folks have died from alcohol, however I know for a fact that more people have overdosed on drugs than on alcohol.
Of course I am against an overreaching government.
But please answer my question, why is George Soros behind every state measure for legalization?
That was seriously uncalled for. :)
Interesting point, but it’s very unlikely that the he will be succeeded by a DemocRAT.
I’m sure Ron will endorse someone. Ron may be out there on some things but I’ve always liked him even though he tends to attract nutty antisemites and the zionists are going to take over the word crowd. It is unfortunate Ron seems not to have learned anything about campaigning from his son Rand. I could still vote for him. It’d be real fun watching him as President. You’d see establishment heads exploding all over the place.
