OXFORD --
Jury selection has been completed in the trial of a family pet python that killed a 2-year-old girl.
In 2009, an 8-foot python snake killed Shaianna Hare as she slept in her crib in Sumter County.
The girl's mother Jaren Hare and her boyfriend Charles Darnell, 34, are on trial for the child's death. The couple is facing manslaughter and child abuse charges. The trial, which is expected to last about a week, continues Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
Documents reveal the couple had not fed the 8-foot-6-inch Burmese python for a month before the accident and that the snake had escaped repeatedly.
Darnell told detectives the snake was in its tank when he went to bed that night. An hour later, he found the python in the hallway, stuffed it in a mesh bag and put it in its tank.
Darnell told investigators he found the snake coiled around Shaianna's head, its fangs sunk into her forehead the next morning. He stabbed the snake until he could get it off.
Darnell's lawyer says he's innocent.
"He doesn't believe he is criminally responsible," said Rhiannon Arnold. "Certainly, not of murder or manslaughter."
Hare and Darnell could face up to 35 to 40 years in prison if convicted.
This is in Florida, near The Villages.
Well, if they could pick that same jury that acquitted the baby killer last Monday, then they’d both walk, and the question would be “Who’s Shaianna Hare? . . . What snake?”
Floriduh....of course.
He doesn’t believe he is criminally responsible,” said Rhiannon Arnold. “Certainly, not of murder or manslaughter.”

Hmmmm
Had exotic wild animal that likes ti eat small animals...
didnt fed same exotic wild animal for a month
Same exotic wild animal was capable of frequent escapes
Same exotic wild animal was in the proximate to a young hunman child/animal most of the day and night
Same exotic wild animal normally eats and sleeps all day long in the wild
Same exotic wild animal was very hungry
Same exotic wild animal went looking for food as one of those exotic wild animal are prone to do at regular intervals
Same exotic wild animal found a small live yummy animal
Same exotic wild animal proceeds to eat said small live yummy animal...
And the verdict is...
I don’t think there’s a lot of python-keeping in The Villages. Little yip-dogs and retired greyhounds. (My parents live there, with a morbidly obese cat.)
The lead is misleading. It’s the owners of the python, not the snake, that are on trial.
Murder? Manslaughter?
Seems this prosecutor is going to make the same mistake the one with Casey Anthony did.
Near the Villages. Schwartz’s property line and buffalo pasture is near the Oxford area.
Do they have criminal neglect or gross neglect etc in Florida ???
He knowingly brought a illegal wild dangerous animal into the house near the child and had it living IN THE HOUSER where it ESCAPED FREQUENTLY and he DIDNT FEED IT FOR A MONTH
I wonder if the childs life was insured
Yes, the report flip-flops. Starts out the Python's family is on trial, then it refers to the little girl's.
Yes he does.
Mom says the buffalo were moved out. The kids loved seeing them when they visited. We had some near us in Oklahoma.
I don't know but those seem like more appropriate charges.
He knowingly brought a illegal wild dangerous animal
Didn't know the "pet" was illegal, that brings on a whole different aspect to the case....(I admit I just skimmed the article)
Or maybe they could get a few of those voters from the 2000 election...
and he DIDNT FEED IT FOR A MONTH
Nothing uncommon about that at all, snakes go for long periods of time without eating, naturally.
I doubt if you can keep an EIGHT FOOT python in a house anywhere...
You are hilariously ignorant of the basics of snakes and their care. Please do research before posting next time because those of us who have had snakes find your attitude quite annoying.
Thanks.
