Former first lady Betty Ford dies at 93

Betty Ford said things that first ladies just don't say, even today. And 1970s America loved her for it.

According to Mrs. Ford, her young adult children probably had smoked marijuana - and if she were their age, she'd try it, too. She told "60 Minutes" she wouldn't be surprised to learn that her youngest, 18-year-old Susan, was in a sexual relationship (an embarrassed Susan issued a denial).

Laura Bush backs abortion and homosexual "marriage". Call her a POS.

I take it you believe that she is. I don't use that term except perhaps as a visceral reaction.

Are you going to call Betty Ford a saint? Will you nod with approval as she is honored by NARAL and NOW and Planned Parenthood for her lifetime devotion to Abortion rights?

Laura Bush hasn't been honored by NARAL or PP. If she accepts some award from them, then she will qualify for that designation in my book.

What we disagree with is vulgarity on an obituary thread.

This is a NEWS thread. It has not been officially designated as an Obituary or Memorial Thread.

Why don't you start one and designate it. This thread references a news article that lauds Betty Ford for being a strong advocate for Abortion. I would think that referencing such an article removes any designation that this thread was intended as a memorial thread.

If your intention was to make this an obituary thread and make it off limits to comments about her lifetime dedication to Abortion, you could have found a different article to reference and you could have designated the thread as an Obituary thread.

In effect your poisoned your own well by linking to an article praising her for her work on behalf of abortion.

I don't use that term except perhaps as a visceral reaction.

Outlaw Woman used the term and that was objected to by other posters. Since you are defending her that designated approval of the vulgarity.

Are you going to call Betty Ford a saint?

Post a link to anywhere that I do so. Since you can't, and my objections on this thread were only to vulgar and crude posts, I won't respond to your exaggerations again.

southern rock posted on Saturday, July 09, 2011 10:57:47 AM: “Enjoy the country club Republican convention with all the Rinos. I’ll choose those uncouth Tea Party types to associate with.”

I've fought those battles. I have very little patience with country club Republicans who place profit above patriotism, and love their bank accounts more than America. I know what it's like to sit in people's offices and be told back in the 1980s that ideology is irrelevant, and that what counts in politics is personal relations with people so we can be in a better position to do good things for our constituents.

Poppycock.

That's nothing but Republicans adopting a Democratic model of governing by handouts — with the recipients being favored businesses rather than favored socioeconomic groups. Methods are not neutral. If we use bad methods which were developed by smart people with bad ideas, we may well find out that the methods lead us into some very bad places.

We need to fight with every ounce of our fiber against policies that are destroying America. I believed that in 1980, and I believe it today.

What I will not do is use tactics that bring the institutions of government into disrepute. That's an important caution that needed to be said to the more radical conservatives in the 1980s, but Ronald Reagan's personal grandfatherliness disarmed a lot of the wild-eyes types; today it needs to be said to some of the Tea Party people — definitely not all, but some. God Himself has established the institutions of the state, the family and the church, and we disrespect those institutions at our peril.

Attack policies by proving them wrong. Show voters why liberalism is dangerous and liberals need to be voted out of office. Use cold, hard facts to do it.

Rude, crude and obnoxious language may “rile up the troops,” but it doesn't win elections.

Convincing people that liberal policies will destroy our country is what we need to be doing. Anything else is a distraction at best, and counterproductive at worst by driving voters away and harming the very institutions of constitutional government that we are trying to uphold.

P-Marlowe, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't see DJ MacWow saying Mrs. Ford's views on abortion, etc., couldn't or shouldn't be discussed.

The objections made by me, by DJ MacWow, and by others were to abusive language.

That's a broader problem than just the issue of Mrs. Ford. We have a real problem in conservative circles with bad language, it is a growing problem, and it needs to get stopped.

Liberals use that kind of language to demonize their opponents and sow disrespect for institutions. At its more extreme level, such tactics lead to revolution and overturning of all rules in society and in state.

Methods are not neutral. We, as conservatives, cannot use tactics of disrespect and delegitimization drawn from Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals” without discovering the hard way that they will lead us places we do not want to go.

We are constitutional conservatives in a free republic. We forget those truths at our peril.

The Admin Moderator’s opinion on what type of thread this was is irrelevant, especially since he was apparently overruled in his decision to pull the posts.

This is a news thread. It references a news article that lauds Betty Ford for her dedication to the killing of unborn children. You linked the thread to that article, so in essence any deviation from your standard Obituary thread is your fault since you didn’t designate it as a memorial of obituary thread and you linked to an article that looked upon her work on behalf of the Abortion industry in a positive light. It’s your thread. You can request that it be removed from Free Republic.

If you want to start a praise-only thread in memory of Betty Ford, then by all means start one. Just designate it as such and don’t link to a news article that lauds her for her work on abortion.

If you didn’t like the way this thread turned, then you have only yourself to blame.

The Admin Moderator is just another poster like you and me. Sometimes they get overruled by the Boss.

Either the Admin Moderator or you could have designated this in the headline as a memorial or obituary thread. It wasn't done.

Like I said if you don't like the direction this thread went, then push the abuse button on yourself and request that the thread be pulled. If the thread is still here tomorrow, I will have to assume that you aren't as upset about the way it turned out as you pretend.

Don’t feed the disruptor troll. You’ve already mentioned the exaggeration and straw-man arguments being put forth, so there is no point in feeding one who cannot keep his spit out of the soup.

It’s interesting that the AP looks upon marijuana experimentation with a benign, fawning viewpoint. Have they ever explained why they treat tax resistance differently?

The objections raised on this thread were addressing vulgar and abusive language.

Do you believe that Free Republic should allow vulgar and abusive language on the forum.

You’re welcome.

It portends a very frightening outlook for us and
for the future of this ‘civil’ society.

Blatant tastelessness, crudity = apparently some
who call themselves Christian and conservative see
nothing wrong in unleashing the sewer level of speech
and hate of the secular, savage left.

And people are aghast when the youth of today act out
like monsters without shame.

Shame .. a concept of the past?

God help us all .. God have mercy on America.

P-Marlowe, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't see DJ MacWow saying Mrs. Ford's views on abortion, etc., couldn't or shouldn't be discussed.

Early on on this thread and another thread, the Admin Moderator shut down ANY references to Betty Ford's accomplishments on behalf of the Abortion industry. I had about a dozen of my posts pulled and I didn't use any vulgarity. The posts were later restored as were the posts from OW when she fist discovered that this saintly lady had been awarded a lifetime achievement award from NARAL at a luncheon where the speakers were begging Bill Clinton to veto the Partial Birth Abortion Ban.

I was somewhat taken aback by all the sweet comments from pro-lifers who were extolling her life and achievements and ignoring the fact that she has an Abortion award that even Barrack Obama hasn't yet earned.

Whether or not OW overreacted or not, the fact remains that Betty Ford does not deserve the praise of Pro-lifers. She was an enemy to the pro-life movement from the day Roe v Wade passed until the day she died.

In that sense even though I would not use vulgarity to describe her, I'm not so sure I would be willing to go to the wall condemning a long time freeper who is active on the pro-life threads simply because of a vitriolic reaction to finding out who Betty Ford really was and finding out what her life was really all about.
