Former first lady Betty Ford dies at 93

Betty Ford said things that first ladies just don't say, even today. And 1970s America loved her for it.

According to Mrs. Ford, her young adult children probably had smoked marijuana - and if she were their age, she'd try it, too. She told "60 Minutes" she wouldn't be surprised to learn that her youngest, 18-year-old Susan, was in a sexual relationship (an embarrassed Susan issued a denial).

Good. Then everyone can see the crassness.

Have a nice day.

“I didn’t know she was a pro-abort/pro-death woman until this very evening.”

Most First Ladies have been, in modern times. Speaking the plain truth about the dead is not the same as speaking ill. You stated a fact. We must hope the woman repented in time.

Laura Bush is pro-abortion and homosexual “marriage”. Her obituary thread, when the time comes, will make this one look tame. Or maybe not.

“I’m thinking of taking a break.”

You should. Step back from the computer for a few days and you get a different perspective. Looks like a tangled-up snakepit.

When logging into the forum becomes a pernicious habit, you start getting used to jerks and goofs you’d never tolerate in real life.

Might want to try cracking open a Bible instead; or a volume of Mark Twain; or a cookbook; or a box of crayons even. Any of them is more likely to improve a person than this.

I have a commitment to the FReepathon threads but when it’s over I will take off for awhile.

“The evil that men do lives on. The good is often buried with their bones.” — Will S.

When you pass, would you like a group of people to publicly list all the bad things that you did and lambaste you for each evil deed and every all-too-human mistake? And if they discount all the good that you did and let it be overshadowed and forgotten, would that be what you want?

Would it not be preferable, on the day you die, to have people who didn’t appreciate your life’s record to simply say, “May she rest in peace?” That is the civil thing to do in polite society. No preacher stands over a grave and excoriates the corpse.

There is no need to mention the deceased’s bad politics or wrong-headed stand on the vital issue of the right to life of human beings in the womb. The woman is beyond debate, and we have no way of knowing whether she repented her leftist beliefs before she passed.

We can only give her the benefit of the doubt. She is in the Hands of One Who knows.

“She was a classless drunken cow.”

A stupid. ignorant, nasty and creepy thing to say about a former Republican first lady.

I agree with your comments with respect to Mrs. Ford, the “lifetime” wife of a true gentleman.

And, I agree some of the comments on this thread are not nice, and minimally do not reflect well on FR, to put it mildly.

Notwithstanding any of the foregoing though, I believe some of us, including me, are dancing on the head of the hypocrisy pen because when the O man goes I’m quite certain I could not think of one nice thing to say about the man.

...and that is a good thing. Maybe some lessons will be learned by this thread.
I happen to believe in the "powers of redemption," and pray that God will forgive me for my sins as He may do for all of the faithfully departed.
May Mrs. Ford RIP.

In her way, she affected as many lives as her husband. A great story of recovery and endurance. RIP, pretty lady, sober lady, healer lady, First Lady.

You must be utterly immune to embarrassment & humiliation; two things which you have brought upon yourself in spades.

There is a time & a place to criticize people. Immediately after they die is NOT one of them. Calling anyone a POS is appalling and coming from a woman it is doubly so. I’m a woman and a feminist and I would never dream of using that term; even for someone I found despicable.

She did more to help alcoholics than anyone since Bill Wilson.

Amen. The ripples in the pond from her work conducted largely in deep privacy (her Betty Ford Clinic recovery centers for deadly addictions) will go out for generations to come. Cannot believe the morons on this thread.

I think you bring up a very good point. We all have people who we would be hard pressed to find one nice thing to say about them on their death. That’s where our brains come into use and we refrain from negative comments. We might think them, but we will not post them. I think about what it would be like to be related to someone, married to someone, or friends w/ someone and when they die to read awful, cruel things. I don’t wish that on anyone.

I have a feeling that when O goes you won’t be spewing vitriol. Nice post!

I always thought conservatives were the ones with manners. I guess not.

Actually, I have thought that there is too much emphisis on politeness and "decorum" by many posters on this site. And the Admin Moderator is one of the worst. Politeness and decorum cause Rinoitis. Why can't we be a little crude when standing up for what is true. It is sad and pathetic how conservatives feel they need to hold back, and you see where that gets us. I am happy this thread was restored. No thanks to Admin Mod, no doubt.
