Thirty-one percent of poll respondents in the PPP survey said they want Perry to be the Republican nominee, more than double the number who said they would vote for former Massachusetts Gov. Romney. Only 15 percent said Romney would take their vote in the primary.
Tea Party favorite Rep. Michele Bachmann was the first choice of 11 percent of Texas Republicans - the only other candidate to crack double digits.
In the recently poll, conservative voters strongly packed Perry with 34 percent of those self-identified voters saying they would cast a ballot for their governor.

Perry Watch: Republican Governors Association raises record amount under Rick Perry’s leadership
The Republican Governors Association raised $22.1 million since the beginning of 2011 â further evidence of the fundraising prowess of Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
The fundraising figure is almost $10 million more than the Republican Governors Association raised in the first halves of 2009 and 2007.
but he does not hold a candle to Bachmann, Palin, Cain, or McCotter.
and your statement “ he is the only potential GOP candidate who can beat Obama” is like saying “John Anderson” or “Howard Baker” is the only candidate who can beat Jimmy Carter in 1980....that Reagan is tooooo Conservative for America. If there is a time to bring in a hard core Conservative it is NOW!
There are supporters of several other candidates that make that claim for their choice. I actually think several candidates could beat him (unfortunately maybe even Romney).
I know someone who voted for McCain because the MSM published polls that showed he was the only one who could beat Hillary.
All I'm saying is that's an overused line.......
Don’t stub your toe on that hurdle Ricky. LOL
Agreed, pretty much everyone in the race could beat Obama.
Palin is not running and Bachmann, Cain, or McCotter have no chance of beating Romney. Romney would lose to Obama (and your other mentioned candidates would too, should they get the GOP nomination by some miracle).
Obama is going to pull out all the stops, he may be beatable, but not easily beatable, we need a strong candidate with a record, which Perry has, none of the others do.
It’s time to wake up and smell reality.
Ron Paul would be trounced... I know you are heartbroken, Allegra.
I'm hoping we're right, this guy has to be beaten and all those he put in be rooted out of the gumbmint.......
It's a first principle.
Bachmann coming up on FOX and Friends.
Bachmann is currently ahead of Romney in the Zogby poll.
it is too early to count out Palin.
your logic is not sound.
It sounds like you are just another ‘Shill for Perry’ and other main stream republicans like Perry and McCain.
No Thanks.
If “conservative” means being a globalist, amnesty-supporting, AGW-worshipping RINO who once ran AL Gore’s campaign, then I must be misunderstanding the new definition of the term.
Ron Paul has a limited group (limited in many ways) of hard-core supporters. His poll numbers might occasionally fluctuate a little higher than that hard-core group of limited individuals, but never very much higher. Ron Paul has about as much chance of winning the Republican nomination in 2012 as he had in 2008.
Perry isn't conservative he's an avid politician who as governor will ultimately do what the conservative populace of Texas wants him to do. After watching him closely I truly see he will be another GW Bush.
Bachmann is beating Wrongney in the latest polls.
Moreover, if Wrongney wins the nomination, 40% of the base will stay home.
Perry is Bush 2.0... and everyone knows where that got us, which is why conservatives are most assuredly NOT “starting to realize Perry is a conservative”. He is a deal-making, finger-in-the-wind politician, which is exactly what America DOES NOT NEED.
Beat me by six seconds!
I highly recommend you read Polybius’ excellent analysis based on facts in these two posts on another thread:

Let’s see, Bush vs Obama, yes, let’s just stick with Obama... is that your point?

Critics rip Perrys vaccine mandate
Governor rejects opponents calls to reverse order
AUSTIN Gov. Rick Perry stood firm Monday against a political firestorm generated by his
order that sixth-grade girls be inoculated against a sexually transmitted virus linked to cervical cancer.
Social conservatives from Texas to Washington called on Perry to reverse his order making
Texas the first state to require the vaccine, saying the mandate makes sex seem permissible
and that parents should be the ones to decide whether to immunize their daughters.
And several Texas lawmakers expressed outrage at Perry for circumventing the legislative process.

The vaccine, Gardasil, is manufactured by Merck, which was represented in Austin by the
lobbyist Mike Toomey, who was chief of staff for Mr. Perry from 2002 to 2004.
