FORT PIERCE The Florida Highway Patrol reopened both directions of Interstate 95 at Indrio Road, in northern St. Lucie County, after the highway was temporarily closed when a grenade was found under the underpass at Indrio Road, a FHP official said.
Trooper Tomas Corey noticed the suspicious device around 9:38 a.m. while traveling east on Indrio Road.
Corey stopped and identified it as a grenade.
A call was made to the St. Lucie County's Sheriff Office Bomb Squad. In the meantime Trooper Corey stopped all east and westbound traffic traveling on Indrio Road under the interstate.
Traffic was also shut down at the exit ramps for south and northbound traffic to Indrio Road, according to the FHP.
A robot was used and identified the object as a real grenade. However there were no explosives inside nor a detonation device.
"It was the shell of a grenade," said FHP spokesman Tim Frith. "We expect our trooper to have a keen eye out for objects that could jeopardize the safety of the public," Frith said. "It is their job to ask questions and seek answers" to keep the motoring public safe.
Sounds fishy to me, I bet he planted it to get some fame!
I smell something, and it ain't flowers, but it does promote the growth of them.
OK
I like to think of these "events" as a LEO "Senior Skip Day", only with lots of that SWEET overtime...
My goodness. Seems the cops can’t do anything right according to some on this site.
Maybe he’s a cousin of Roy Kronk...................
Someone’s trying to make Lieutenant in his first year......
for some reason, there was a dummy grenade in the junk drawer in my kitchen when I was a kid - we played with it. Never knew that you could cause panic with it
My issue is that when an event likes this happens, Public Safety increasingly seems to think that it's a party on the taxpayers. "Blank check, everybody! We got us an event!"
Would you hazard a guess as to how many responders there were?
To be fair, there IS quite a bit of conspiratorial sniping on the thread, and mine could be included in that observation.
My roommate (now a retired USMC Colonel) in highschool (a military school) had a dummy grenade that he used as a prop when talking to the new kids. He would call one of the kids into the room, sit behind his desk and play/fiddle with this grenade while chatting with the kid. Then, he would "accidently" let the release handle fly off... scaring the heck out of his guest every time.
I have no idea how many went, and won’t venture a guess as it would be no more valid than anyone elses.
And yes, sometimes too many cops or firemen or both show up and stand around with their johnsons in their hands. No question.
Probly fell outer some redneck’s car....
LEO was probly embarassed to say it was really a lighter.
Someone lost their paperweight.
LOL. I remember you could buy a hand grenade lighter when I was in the army.

Some of those dummy grenades were lighters...used to see them on desks in offices.
I have a couple of those sitting on my bookshelf. Nice to know I can shut down an interstate highway for a couple of hours with one should the need arise.

Only if the local trough feeders need some overtime.
:-(
or a hand grenade like this
or this
the likelihood of it doing damage to trafic passing over an Interstate-spec overpass is zero.
Stopping traffic under the bridge until it was cleared makes sense. Shutting down the overhead Interstate traffic does not.
