Weiner House seat will be a 'hot' one (Sept. 13 special election)

Weiner House seat will be a 'hot' one

Two state lawmakers have emerged as the front-runners in the backroom battle to be tabbed as the Democratic candidate to replace disgraced former Rep. Anthony Weiner -- but they were also warned this week not to get too comfortable in the seat if they win.

Queens Democratic leader Joe Crowley, who will pick the party's nominee for the Sept. 13 special election, is anxious to carve up Weiner's former territory when state lawmakers redraw district lines in 2012 to reduce New York's congressional delegation by two.

The prospect of serving just 15 months has scared off some prospective candidates. But several Democratic sources said the two top contenders remaining in the hunt are Assemblymen David Weprin and Rory Lancman. Neither returned calls for comment.

Both Democrats are eyeing the congressional seat as a stepping stone for a 2013 race for citywide office. Weprin ran unsuccessfully for city comptroller in 2009 and could run again should John Liu, as expected, run for mayor in 2013.

Lancman is also considered a potential citywide candidate who would benefit from the higher-profile seat in Congress compared to a relatively obscure Assembly seat in Albany -- even though it would be short-lived.

Crowley, also a congressman, is all too happy to sacrifice the seat -- which straddles Queens and Brooklyn -- because it would let him shift more of the district back to his base in Queens. He now serves a district that straddles northern Queens and part of The Bronx.

The 2010 Census determined that New York state would lose two congressional seats, and conventional wisdom holds that one seat upstate and one downstate will be dissolved.

"If you're not a hawk on Israel, you ain't going to be popular in this race," the source said.

If you're not a hawk on Israel, you shouldn't be popular in any race.

Being a Democrat politician and supporting Israel is presently at odds with the party line.

“Hot” and “Weiner” should never be used in the same sentence.

Is there a Pubbie in the race? The excerpt doesn't mention this.

That’s what I’m thinking. If his ‘seat’ was hot, he wouldn’t have needed to send that Twitter picture to 18,000 people to get some reaction.

Meanwhile, the Queens Republican Party appeared ready last night to tap businessman Bob Turner to run in the Sept. 13 special election, sources told The Post. Turner, who got 40 percent of the vote when he ran against Weiner last year, has support from Brooklyn Republicans and the Conservative Party.
I know Andy Sullivan the 9/11 Hardhat was considering running but I guess the Queens GOP made a safe choice in Turner since he does have name recognition and got 40% against Weiner.

I admire their effort and courage in running what is likely a sacrificial lamb-race. This is NY after all. The ‘Pubs have lost, what, three special elections in a row there? NY is just one of those states, like many in the Northeast, that will knee-jerk vote ‘Rat, unless they really hit rock bottom (which may happen in the near future).

Maybe it’s time for Chelsea Clinton Mezvinsky to step up and do her civic duty. Surely she would be a slam dunk winner here.

Being a Democrat politician and supporting Israel is presently at odds with the party line.

You're pretty much correct on that, but there are gullible Jewish 'Rats who will buy into deceptions, especially if the 'Rat candidate is Jewish, as he is in this special election.

From what I see, it's not official yet. At least three other Republicans are still vying for the nomination. It will be up to the two (unfortunately weak) county organizations to pick a candidate. There are no primaries in a special election in NY.

Bob Turner gamely took on Weiner last year, and actually managed to put the race on the radar screen. However, the NY-09 is one of those districts in which we need to eliminate any excuse that otherwise conservative voters have for voting for the Democrat once again. Just like running someone who is less than 100% pro-life will bring about our defeat in blue-collar Catholic districts (even against a pro-abortion Democrat), since “neither one really follows Catholic teaching on abortion, so I might as well vote for the Democrat who .follows Church teachings on economic issues [sic],” the GOP failing to run a Jewish candidate in the NY-09 will cause enough Jewish voters to cast their votes for the Jewish Democrat in spite of them agreeing with the Republican on more issues. I have nothing against Bob Turner, but I think that his high-water mark would be 46%.

The candidate I would love to see run for the GOP is Orthodox Jewish community leader (and now judge) Noach Dear, who is a former Democrat who ran against Weiner several times in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, but since we don’t know in which districts the Brooklyn Orthodox Jewish communities will be placed for 2012 (Dem redistricters will likely want to split them up again, perhaps among 3 or 4 districts this time), he may not be willing to give up his judgeship to run.

...Noach Dear, who is a former Democrat...

I've heard the name, but was unaware he left the 'Rat party officially.

In the meantime, Crowley, the head of the Queens County Democratic Party, does not actually reside in Queens although he has a home in Woodside. He really lives in Arlington, Virginia with his wife and kids. Crowley must go. He is a demagogue who tossed away his pro life principles to be a good Demoncrat. Crowley and Weiner are two sides of the same coin.
