MEXICO CITY (AP) U.S. and Mexican officials signed an agreement Wednesday allowing each country's trucks to traverse the other's highways, implementing a key provision of the North American Free Trade Agreement after nearly two decades of bickering.
Transportation secretaries Ray LaHood and Dionisio Perez-Jacome signed the three-year memorandum, which is based on an agreement announced in March by Presidents Barack Obama and Felipe Calderon.
NAFTA, signed in 1994, had called for Mexican trucks to have unrestricted access to highways in border states by 1995 and full access to all U.S. highways by January 2000. Canadian trucks have no limits on where they can go.
But until now, Mexican trucks have seldom been allowed farther than a buffer zone on the U.S. side of the border. In retaliation, Mexico had imposed higher tariffs on dozens of U.S. products.

Anyone ‘in the know’ about how well Mexican trucks are inspected and/or Mexican truck drivers qualified to drive a big rig?
per LaHood.. ‘safety concerns have been resolved’.
Inspection don’t need no stinking inspection. Not going to be any americans driving trucks into Mexico.
How long before U.S. trucks are hi-jacked and the drivers murdered or held for ransom?
We don’t know from trucks.
Americn trucks will likely not travel south of the border due to crime and hijackings.
One of my former clients in El Paso, when shipping from a distribution center in Mexico to another point in Mexico, sent trucks out (carrying high value cargo) in convoy of at least three vehicles with Mexican guards, armed with machine guns, to avoid hijacking.
The company was also unable to pay its Mexicans workers more than the government allowed, about $40 a week. Nevertheless the same company was compelled to pay the Mexican government millios per year for being able to conduct its business.
I don’t think there will be many american drivers driving in Mexico.
the issue was we, USA, wouldn’t allow mexican trucks farther into USA than IIRC 50 miles from border.
It was actually part of the orginal NAFTA back in 94 but we have held this off for a long time.
We did suffer since mexico levied tariffs on quite a few of our products going into mexico
It is all a big LIE tho, that mexican trucking companies will be in compliance with our emission and safety laws
so the correct question is
How long before a mexican truck plows into a car and kills everyone?
i say within a year
Any truck carrying goods from an American company that fled to Mexico should have to pay that driver at the US wage rate while in the US. Likewise, any truck picking up any load or any trailer in the US should have to pay that driver at the US wage rate while in the US. Additionally, any driver carrying any American goods south of the border that normally were carried by US drivers should have to pay that driver at US wage rates.
This is just a barely concealed effort to use low-wage drivers to take US jobs. If they could have done it by phone from India or China, they would have done that.
The word millios in post ten should have been millions. Sorry about that
next the NRLB will say they have to unionize.
So what does the Texas governor have to say about this?
I used to work near the truck crossing at the Otay Mesa port in San Diego. The roadsides are litterd with plastic bottles full of urine. Get used to it.
“The company was also unable to pay its Mexicans workers more than the government allowed, about $40 a week. Nevertheless the same company was compelled to pay the Mexican government millions per year for being able to conduct its business.”
Corruption: this is why Mexico will always be a “little” country.
How well Mexican trucks are inspected and/or Mexican truck drivers qualified to drive a big rig? About as well as Mob hit men are trained in CPR.
A few years ago we heard how the chi-coms sent a train of stuff to N. Korea and they kept the train,
I can see it now, American trucks go to Mexico to deliver the goods, the drivers disappear and their trucks bring illegals and marijuana back here with different numbers and drivers.
Coming to a neighborhood near you real soon,.
I agree unless that person in the White House gives it Texas and California.
