"Bachmann surges far ahead of Republican contenders
But candidate trails if Rick Perry, Chris Christie, Sarah Palin enter race

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is surging far ahead of her Republican rivals in the race for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, according to a new Zogby poll.

The U.S. representative from Minnesota, who led among announced candidates in a June 21 poll, has now added 10 percentage points to her previous mark, and now stands at 34 percent.

That's a 19-point lead over second place Herman Cain, who stayed the same at 15 percent support.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney came in third place, but dropped a point to 14 percent, and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas dropped two percentage points to 11 percent, coming in fourth place.

They were followed by Rick Santorum at 7 percent, Tim Pawlenty and Jon Huntsman at 4 percent, and Newt Gingrich at 2 percent.

While Bachmann's support is growing, she could face trouble if some other well-known names jump into the race.

Zogby also asked for whom would Republicans vote in a primary if Texas Gov. Rick Perry, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin were candidates.

In that hypothetical scenario, Perry finished first with 18 percent, Christie second with 17 percent, Bachmann third at 15 percent, Paul fourth at 10 percent, Palin fifth at 9 percent, and Cain and Romney tied for sixth with 8 percent each.

Probably the ONLY thing we can all agree on here at Free Republic is that MITT ROMNEY MUST BE STOPPED!! (Politically speaking of course).

This should be the uniting feature of Job #1 of all Patriot Conservatives within the G.O.P.

“Perry is a RINO, and shouldn’t be let anywhere near the nomination.”

Amen from Fort Worth.

you didn’t ask me, but I am a native texan, and Perry is a real RINO.

He talks big in front of the cameras, but governs from the left. That’s right, not the middle, the left.

Who would want forced vaccination of middle school girls for STDs?

Or maybe would laud praises on Islam, and make a special agreement with the state of Texas with a Imam? And give them a commenerative brick to start the building of a new mosque?

Or make a proposal to sell Texas land to a foreign company to develop a roadway that it could then charge Texans to drive on?

And it goes on, and on, and on.

But instead you read about some “hot air” comments Perry makes that panders to the conservatives.

Don’t be fooled. Perry is NO CONSERVATIVE.

Re: Paul camp - they’re working on various grassroots and official campaign projects across the country. Using official and grassroots methods to ID Ames Straw Poll voters.

Arguing about Perry.

I think that Ron Paul supporters have learned that FR is not the place to debate the merits of politicial issues, but it’s a place where opponents face off to slam each other. Which is good of course, but not quite what they’re up to.

I can tell you that it appears that Ron Paul is the top Republican with Independent males under 40 in Iowa, near Ames. If we’re talking about polls.

This Zogby poll is bs, because everyone taking this poll has signed up to take this poll.

Because, according to Karl Rove, we must do what Karl Rove says.

It was Karl Rove who caused Perry to switch to Republican, and Karl Rove who ran Perry’s first campaign as a Republican.

Ron Paul?

R U Serious?

He and Brawney Fwrank just teamed up to tackle our Nation’s most serious crisis, and introduced a bill to make Mary Jane (and others) legal.

Ron Pauls supporters dont’ debate, anyway, they are as close to clueless zombies marching as you will ever find.

Dude and snowrip, it is hardly an open and shut case, I mean Perry is not McCain or Lindsey Graham. Compared to Romney, Perry is very conservative. At least he believes in God, is anti-abortion, supports smaller government, lower taxes, is pro-business, supports the troops, secure borders, pro-RKBA, and anti Federal Government marxism. Perry has his shortcomings, but he is no classic RINO nor is he a socialist IMHO. There are plenty of republican socialists but he’s not one.

I think Bachmann is the best of the bunch, but I can live with Cain or even Perry if I must.

I was just responding to post 2, which asked, paraphrasing, “what’s up with Ron Paul these days”?

And the answer is, in Iowa, working on at least 2 voter id and Ames Straw Poll GOTV operations. Also, staffing booths at Iowa County Fairs.

The campaign season has started, and Ron Paul supporters are giving money, and working on campaign projects.

Cain / Bachman

Herman is getting old, one term, then 8 of Bachman.

I could go with Cain / Palin for the same reasons.

News Flash Bachmann trolls ...If Palin can't win then Bachmann can't win.....facts are nasty little things but there is not that much difference between these two ladies. If one is unelectable then so is the other.

But it's nice to know Bachmann only leads because Palin hasn't joined the race yet.

First, I seriously doubt that Michele Bachmann will come out of the nomination process as the GOP nominee - for several reasons, not the least of which is that this nation simply has not preferred to elect a member of the House over most of its history. Yeah, I think it happened, once, if memory serves - but that was a very long time ago.

Second, these polls are hardly a measure of success outside the political grass roots.

But, the Democrats are saddled with a massive political failure - run-of-the-mill Republican voters appear to be waking up to the failures of left-leaning RINO's - and the latest supposedly 'hot' governor of Texas isn't causing any kind of massive ground-swell - though not officially 'in' yet.

So perhaps a female member of the House could pull of the greatest upset in history. But, I fear it's just sadly all too unlikely.

I’m surprised that only one person commented on the fact that this is a Zogby poll. According to Zogby, John Kerry was our president in 2004. The absolute, bottom, worst of the heap pollster there is.

Zogby polls are so biased that even the lefty rag, pollster.com will not even publish his polls, let alone RCP.

Zogby hates Palin and is pushing Bachmann.

Bachmann is not fit for the highest office in the land! I guess she figures the bar is pretty low with Obama, but hopefully most Conservatives have a higher bar in mind.

On top of that, the guy updates his poll at 5 pm on election night, and then tries to claim he was the most accurate.
