Perry Breaks With a Fellow Texan: Bush
New York Times ^ | July 5, 2011 | JIM RUTENBERG and JEFF ZELENY

Posted on 07/05/2011 9:15:40 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

AUSTIN, Tex. — Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican contemplating a presidential run, shares many attributes with the last man who ran for president from here, his predecessor and onetime patron, George W. Bush. He has the same straight-legged Texas swagger; the down-home, clipped speaking style; the desert-baked conservatism.

But in recent years, Mr. Perry has broken politically with Mr. Bush, questioning his credentials as a fiscal conservative, accusing him of going on “a big government binge” and playing down some of Mr. Bush’s accomplishments in Texas in light of his own.

Mr. Perry’s public statements exposed a long-simmering rivalry that had been little known outside of the political fraternity here but underscores the rightward drift of the Republican Party since Mr. Bush was president. More acutely, Mr. Perry’s criticism holds potential peril and benefit for him should he decide to mount a presidential campaign, allowing him to establish an identity distinct from Mr. Bush but risking a guerrilla campaign against him by the former president’s inner circle.

Mr. Perry, whose aides say will make a decision within weeks, has been meeting around the country with potential fund-raisers, and last week went to Colorado for a gathering of prominent conservative rainmakers held by members of the Koch family, which helped finance the Tea Party movement.....

On government spending, immigration and education, Mr. Perry’s criticisms of Mr. Bush have given him cachet with conservatives, especially with Tea Party voters who blame the former president for allowing spending and the reach of government to grow rapidly.

Those criticisms have burnished the Perry image as less prone to ideological compromise or a fuzzy “compassionate” brand of conservatism, an appealing trait to those Republican primary voters seeking purity in their nominee....

” “For example, some aspects of the law turn law enforcement officers into immigration officials by requiring them to determine immigration status during any lawful contact with a suspected alien, taking them away from their existing law enforcement duties, which are critical to keeping citizens safe.” “

WRONG!

SB1070 has officers check immigration status ONLY AFTER THE OFFICEr BELIEVES A CRIME IS BEING COMMITTED OR TRAFFIC LAWS HAVE BEEN VIOLATED.

Why does the NY Slimes like Perry so much at this point? That has me very nervous.

Also, they note his aids say he will decide in weeks. What, you mean it is too late for Palin to enter but Perry still has weeks to decide. How come everyone isn’t bashing Perry for taking weeks more to decide and holding everybody up with his “indecision”.

I’m just pointing out the difference the MSM acts toward the various candidates, with their most vitriol reserved for the most Conservatives candidates.

I don’t see any hate of the MSM toward Perry. Do you?

I am for Rick Perry to become stronger on immigration and more like Arizona. The Arizona Governor actually tweaked her law after Perry made that comment. So, Perry rubbed me the wrong way with regard to this issue.

HOWEVER, with regard to this last legislative session, I thought he was going to hit a home run with his immigration bill, but it died in the house. Here is a link: Texas Legislature adjourns, 2 Perry bills fail The other bill was the airport patdown issue

Apples and Oranges. With the Texas Legislature in session, as governor, Perry has been actively working to pass his agenda. Perry's made it clear he wouldn't consider running until he was through with the special session. There is nothing stopping Palin from declaring.

OK sweetheart, you and that other guy go on and vote for Peter Perfect while the rest of up make up a flash mob and take back the White House from BO. It can be done but it requires a pretty large group.

Thanks for the level response brother. My BIGGEST fear is that we will wind up with another 2008 scenario. That was not at all good.

It seems that Governors from such vast and highly populated states do appear more moderate, (Because of the Demographics) Like Reagan was when he governed California.

But take heart that Reagan did the right thing and more importantly, he had the right stuff to do so. Perry has much the same qualities as Reagan did. And never forget that Reagan actually did approve amnesty on his watch, but did far more good than one or two less than perfect policies.

Perry’s real position on immigration does not seem to be a tough one.

Finding any border state governor or senator who's tough on immigration enforcement is hard to do. They all almost reflexively pander to Hispanics at one time or another due to the Hispanic populations in their states. And they don't change much if they make it to the senate or the White House.

If Perry becomes a serious contender, those who support immigration law enforcement better get him on the record, in detail, about immigration issues so people will know what they are voting for. Hopefully, we'll have a Congress that will not pass any form of amnesty after the 2012 election. And hopefully if we have a Republican president he or she won't be so pigheaded as to try to force something on the American people they don't want.

August 28, 2007: [excerpt] "Perry, in Mexico with a Texan trade mission seeking opportunities in areas like renewable energy, said the federal government’s plan to build a wall along much of the border to keep out illegal immigrants was “idiocy.”

“We need those individuals to continue to grow our economy,” Perry told a briefing with reporters.

“If you show up illegally, without your card or you’re here as a criminal element, I’m for throwing the book at those folks, but the issue of people who want to legally, thoughtfully and appropriately come to America to work and help us build our economy — we should quickly come up with a program and an identification card to do that.” [end excerpt] Source

You think this is LIKING Perry? Google him and look at some stories. The MSM is ready, willing and getting ready to print lies, half-truths and smear him from one side of the country to the other.

That’s correct, absolutely nothing. The only thing stopping Palin, is Palin.

And what did YOU know Liz about Acorn 5 years ago?

From a 2005 story in the Houston Chronicle titled, "Advocate for affordable housing earns kudos in lending law reform" we learn that the group's proudest moment came courtesy of Rick Perry's signature.

Nice pic. ....BUT he voted to defund them.. here's the linky dink PERRY CAMP ASKS WHERE WAS KAY

*snip* "Less than one week after the Senate returned to work, Senator Hutchison skipped a key vote to prevent ACORN from receiving taxpayer funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is yet another example of Senator Hutchison failing to protect the taxpayers of Texas. The Senator made time to vote for a $700 billion bailout for Wall Street, but when it came time to prevent tax dollars from going to a liberal activist group, she was nowhere to be found."

Must have been a nice photo op about 10 years ago :-0

“….The group’s proudest moment came last week when Gov. Rick Perry signed a bill that makes important changes in the use of contracts-for-deed, a form of home lending that withholds a title from buyers until they have fully paid their loan.

Passage of the law, which will make it possible for buyers to convert their loans to traditional mortgages, was this year’s top Texas legislative goal for ACORN, which represents 175,000 low- and moderate-income families in 51 U.S. cities. …”

Don't kill off all the Repub possibilities.
I have never attacked any candidate.
I don't go onto threads and bash other candidates.
I started many Sarah Palin threads.
I'm a witness.

Cincinatus' Wife speaks the truth.
