Pinging a few of you who questioned this bridge’s quality in my post announcing the bridge opening.
To: Red Badger
Not to worry, it comes with a one year warranty. That means a new bridge every 90 days.

The man believed to be charge of the work said safety would not be affected by the loose bolts or the absence of barriers . . . They should have left those safety barriers out of the design if the barriers don't contribute to safety.

They can spent that extra 20 minutes thanking God that the bridge didn’t fall down during their commute.

I was involved in a construction project for a steel framed building (6 stories). The bolts which connect the beams are tightened with a very large impact wrench....and the torque can be set to the engineer's specs.
A large number of the bolts were shearing in two...so many that the contractor had to disassemble the building and start over with better bolts.
The culprit: Although they were allegedly American made, the bolts were traced to China.
Any large engineering project in China scares me to death.

“some barriers and bolts had been removed by workers to adjust wiring, which was normal practice after a bridge opened to traffic”
I wonder how they ‘adjust’ wiring. Maybe they had to add wiring that they forgot?...not knowing alot about bridges, it doesn’t seem that ‘normal’ to me.

Shoddy construction on an ever increasing budget and a hurry up as they approached the final umpteenth completion date? Who knew they got the union crew from Boston’s tunnel to do the work?/ sarc

In Japan, there would be shame in such construction and one might be so burdened they would commit Hari-Kiri. In China, the Communist party does it for you. In America, you get a bonus./sarc but sadly true I suppose.

Tooo funny!
They talk about this bridge like its a miracle of modern engineering!
Of course, the second longest (over water) bridge is here in Louisiana. It was built in 1956 and it is 23.8 miles long.
So 55 years later China goes 3 miles longer and its some great accomplishment?
People are all in awe of China's greatness? Perhaps I will be more impressed with the new Jiaozhou bridge if it is still standing in 55 years.
Thanks for the good post!
