LONDON (AP) -- Ronald Reagan was hailed as "a great American hero" Monday as his admirers unveiled a 10-foot-tall (3-meter-tall) statue of the former U.S. president near the American embassy in London.

Condoleezza Rice, national security adviser and secretary of state in President George W. Bush's administration, joined British Foreign Secretary William Hague at the morning ceremony in Grosvenor Square.

"Statues bring us to face to face with our heroes long after they are gone," Hague said "Ronald Reagan is without question a great American hero; one of America's finest sons, and a giant of 20th-century history. You may be sure that the people of London will take this statue to their hearts."

I was hoping the Lady Thatcher would be able to be there in person but, alas, she was not.

The 10 foot bronze of Mr Reagan will be positioned on a pedestal close to the American Embassy in London, and stand alongside two other 20th Century US leaders, Dwight Eisenhower and Franklin D Roosevelt. The US Embassy is moving to a new location next year, but the statues will remain in Mayfair.

To be created by Chas Fagan, who created Mr Reagan's likeness in the US Congress' Capitol Rotunda.

The USS Ronald Reagan would be appropriate today too.

Here’s a man who’s scoffed at and hated in his own country. I can always get into a really heated argument by saying that Reagan was a great President.

It is great to see that the Brits know a hero when they see one. We should do the same here.

I bet Obama and company are squirming.

God bless Ronald Reagan.

Both of them: there with Churchill as statesmen and heroes.

Reagan gets a statue. Obama gives back a bust of Churchill.

That’s really all Americans need to know for 2012,

Was Mrs Thatcher able to attend?

From the story:

Hague also brought a message from former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Reagan's staunch ally, whose frail health has made her public appearances very rare.

I admit I did not go to the site to read the whole article, I have too many screens open following something else.
I had read earlier that she might be present and hoped she would be.

FDR and Ike...good grief neither deserve a statue...only Ronald Reagan...Ike killed 1.7 million German Soldiers while in camps after WWII. They were starved to death on purpose. Patton tried to stop it and he died mysteriously.

--------------------------------------------------

He is also hated in the UK by the same folks that still hate Maggie.

Two recent posts from a Northern (the very socialist part) UK forum -

What's all the fuss about?
Some busibody decided to erect a bronze statue to a bit part American actor.
He only ever took part in ‘B’ films & never was any good.
He was in the John Wayne mould; just stood there & said his lined (sic).

-----

Sir Ronald Reagan, President
worth more dead, that's evident
He had Chimp and quarter-horse as co-stars in film
we shall see what pigeons make of him.
